HTC to drop Dopod brand?
HTC has long been trading under the Dopod brand in China. Now with HTC’s brand in ascendance world wide it seems the Taiwanese company is ready to trade the Dopod brand for its own soon.
Shanghai Daily reports that HTC will start delivering handsets in China by the end of the month or soon after carrying the HTC brand, according to an unnamed industry source.
The Dopod brand has been quite successful in China, with most users associating it with a local company like ZTE, rather than a huge multi-national company such as HTC. International brands have traditionally done poorly in the Chinese market. The move to drop the brand is a reversal of recent statements, where HTC said they would prefer to retain it.

HTC talks Windows Mobile 7, Android and China
It seems its not just LG that cant keep quiet about Windows Mobile 7. At the launch of the HTC T8388 smartphone in Beijing the CEO of Dopod, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HTC, spoke about the difficulties Windows Mobile 7 will have in China.
Mr. Chen Jinghong noted that HTC was involved in the development of Windows Mobile 7, but that the exact release date was up to Microsoft. The current release of Windows Mobile 7 will however not have built-in Chinese support, which is not ideal for China. He said Dopod however still intended to release phones with the OS as soon as Microsoft officially released the OS.
He also noted that HTC intends to launch 15 smartphones in China this year, and the proportion between Windows Mobile and Android will be judged by the market itself.
HTC intended to launch their own HTC Club software store for China, primarily for their Android phones, as it was not legal to access the off-shore hosted Android marketplace from within China. He did not anticipate Google’s departure from China would have much impact on Android in the market.

First official WM 6.5 device launching in July
Here’s a nice bit of good news. It has been speculated recently that the earliest we will see Windows Mobile 6.5 devices would be in Q4 2009, even around November. It now seems that time table has accelerated, and we may see the first device to launch with Windows Mobile 6.5 in less than 2 months, in July 2009.
The smartphone would be a Chinese device branded by Dopod, a subsidiary of HTC, and would be pretty well specified. The Tachi, (AKA Twin from our HTC Roadmap leak from January this year) will have dual radio’s (CDMA and GSM) and a VGA screen.
The full specs are:
This news is pretty good, and one can only hope all devices launched after July this year will come with WM 6.5 build in from the start.
