EE complains Microsoft not doing enough for WP8

imageAfter Nokia’s VP of App development, Bryan Biniak expressed some dissatisfaction with Microsoft now UK’s largest carrier EE has also expressed some frustration with the software giant.

Speaking to MobileToday, EE’s CEO Olaf Swantee said Microsoft needed to provide more marketing support for handsets running their operating system.

‘What’s concerning is we still see such a significant demand for iOS and Android. While Microsoft has seen some increases to the popularity of its platform, it’s still very small compared to the other two. It still has to do work to support it. It’s a different operating system, a good product and exciting, but it needs to offer more support.’

UK has in fact been one of Windows Phone’s better performing markets, with market share recently nearly doubling to close to 9%, according to Kantar WordPanel.

Nokia confirms January end of UK EE exclusivity for the Nokia Lumia 920, but O2 still not carrying the handset

In a press release Nokia confirmed the that the Nokia Lumia 920 will become more widely available in January in the UK, spreading from EE, Orange, T-Mobile and Phones4U to Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse, Three UK and retailer Micro-P. It is of note that O2, the carrier most associated with the iPhone, is not on that list.

Nokia also announced the Nokia Lumia 820 would be available on all carriers, including Vodafone, EE, Orange, T-Mobile, O2, Tesco, Phones4U, Carphone Warehouse and Micro-P.

They also announced that the budget Nokia Lumia 620, which is likely to find great traction in the UK, will be available from February on Vodafone, O2, Three UK, Virgin Mobile, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and via Micro-P into independent retail channels.

While good news, the announcement, which is via site Hexus.net may have slipped out prematurely, as it may deflate last minute sales on EE while punters wait for the handset to arrive on their favourite carrier.

EE finally sees sense, offers increased data caps for more reasonable prices

The only LTE carrier in UK has finally responded to consumer apathy related to their exorbitant prices by increasing data caps and therefore value for money, and also by offering a very reasonable SIM-only plan which offers 5GB for only £15.99.

The 2GB plan now becomes a 3GB allowance, with the 3GB plan increasing to 5GB, and the 5GB allowance now extending to 8GB. All existing 4GEE customers will be automatically upgraded to the new data allowances, with no increase in their monthly fee.

Do these plans make it more attractive to get a Nokia Lumia 920 from UK’s exclusive provider?

Hot deal in UK offers Pay as You Go Nokia Lumia 920 on EE for only £399

If you want a commitment-free Nokia Lumia 920 but still don’t mind being locked to EE/ Orange HotUKDeals are reporting on an amazing in-store deal that can net you a Nokia Lumia 920 with free wireless charging plate for only £399 + £10 top-up.

That makes the handset pretty close to the price of the HTC 8X, and about £100 cheaper than it is available commitment-free from online retailers.

As mentioned earlier, the deal is in store and not online, but for saving £100 a little bit of footwork is surely worth it.

EE’s tariffs revealed, unlimited data nowhere in sight

UK carrier EE, who we believe will have an exclusive on the Nokia Lumia 920 for a period, has posted their pricing plans, and bad news for those hoping to take real advantage of the LTE service on the Nokia Lumia 920 is that they are not cheap at all, at least for data.

Data packages start with the entry-level plan, offering 500MB (£36/pm) and extending up to 8GB (£56/pm) for the heavy data user.

All customers will however be able to tether or use VoIP services as part of their plan – with no need to buy specific data add-ons.

An extra £5 a month will also allow customers to  take their unlimited calls and texts package abroad to the EU and some other selected countries which also includes USA.

The tariffs for a 24 month contract are:

  • £36 a month for Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited Texts and 500MB data
  • £41 a month for Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited Texts and 1GB data
  • £46 a month for Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited Texts and 3GB data
  • £51 a month for Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited Texts and 5GB data
  • £56 a month for Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited Texts and 8GB data

See all the detail at EE here.

£56 per month is a lot, but for a phone 8 GB is pretty close to unlimited. Are our readers still tempted by the Nokia Lumia 920 on EE? Let us know below.

Nokia Lumia 920 coming to UK the 30th October?

Everything Everywhere, now just EE, the UK joint venture between T-Mobile and Orange, has just announced that their 4G LTE roll-out will begin on the 30th October 2012 to 10 cities, with another  6 coming by the end of the year.

That is somewhat interesting, but they also confirmed a bunch of LTE handsets would be available at launch, according to Engadget, including the Nokia Lumia 920.

That may finally peg a launch date for the much anticipated Windows Phone  8 handset, which will hopefully also become available unlocked for buyers using other networks.

To temper the excitement somewhat, it is of note that the handset is not included in EE’s press release.  We have however contacted PR, who will hopefully deliver an answer soon.

Thanks James for the tip.
