Elite Systems brings officially licensed retro game Manic Miner to WP7
In recent weeks we saw the official approval of emulators for Windows Phone 7, but these do not really respect the rights of the original developers, who may still be making money from their retro games.
Such a company is Elite Systems, who is now concentrating on bringing their official games to mobile systems.
They have just discovered Windows Phone 7, and have brought their first game, Manic Miner, written by Matthew Smith in 1983, to Windows Phone 7.
The game features:
- Reversable Virtual joystick and keys for control
- Authentic gameplay experience
- Authentic game sounds
- Retro feel
- Cheat Version
- Auto Save upon exiting the game
The game is a pricy $2.49 and is hopefully the first of many original retro games to come to Windows Phone 7.
Manic Miner can be found in Marketplace here.

Have Marketplace rules changes while we were sleeping, or are emulators now allowed
MobilityDigest calls it the app which breaks all the rules. While that is a bit of hyperbole NES EMU 7 is certainly flouting quite a few. The app is a full NES emulator (which as far as we know is not allowed) which downloads ROM under copyright from the internet (also as far as we know not allowed).
Certainly it seems to flout rule 3.1 Licensed Content, Name, Logo & Trademarks
Content allowed where:
Content and application name are original or licensed.
Copyrighted content that is used with permission. Use of branded items (logos/trademarks) has been approved by the brand owners.
and also rule 2.1
2.1 Your application must be fully functional when acquired from Windows Phone Marketplace (except for additional data as permitted below). Unless you have a pre-existing billing relationship with the user, your application may not require the user to provide payment information, within the application experience, to activate, unlock, or extend usage of the application.
At least the developer is not misrepresenting the games as his own creation, but the fact that the app clearly describes itself as a emulator makes me believe either the rules have changes or some-one is asleep at the wheel at the Marketplace Certification service.
If you want to get in on a good thing while it lasts, the emulator, which has buggy sound, can be found in Marketplace here for $5.

Home brew Gameboy emulator in the works

While emulators are banned in Marketplace this does not stop the home brew community from whipping one up
BadCam3 on XDA-Developers has created Wario’s Jewel 7, a Gameboy emulator for Windows Phone 7.
The software is currently early development and lacks audio output but will be made publicly available “very soon” on BadCam’s blog.
Hopefully this will be a class of apps not affected by the new Mango COM restrictions.

Windows Phone 7 emulator skin shrunk for the vertically disadvantaged
![]() |
![]() |
Tezawaly from nanapho.jp has done anyone who it trying to play with the Windows Phone 7 emulator on a wide-screen machine a favour by shrinking down the rather hefty skin surrounding it.
At the moment it requires nearly 800 vertical pixels to display properly – with this change it is reduced significantly.
He has also added some text to remind us of the shortcut keys that can be used for the hardware keys not visible – one lesser known for example is Page Up to dismiss the software keyboard and to be allowed to use the keyboard of your PC to enter text.
The skins are just some PNG’s and some XML which can be download from nanapho and will need to overwrite the existing files. The emulator will need to be restarted to take effect.
While this hack is of course extremely practical, I cant help but feel this is a good chance for the more artistic to make their wildest dreams for WP7 handsets designs come to life on their PC screen also.

A brief look at Bing Audio and Zune updates in Mango
The Windows Phone 7 Mango emulator continues to deliver, allowing us to have a peek at Bing Audio, the Shazaam-like service in Windows Phone 7, but also to see some new features in the Zune music player.
In the Zune player of note is that podcasts and apps are also searched when music is searched using the panorama interface, that the music controls have been moved to the top, that there are now shuffle and repeat controls on the side of the album, the presence of smart DJ and the ability to save a playlist.
Music can also be shared by emailing a link to the song in Marketplace.
The controls brought up by the volume buttons are now much larger, and clicking on the name of the song now finally takes you to the currently playing song. Hopefully once the emulator is unlocked we will be able to see a lot more.
Thanks Chris again for the tip.

Camera settings still not retained in Windows Phone 7 update?
Mobiletechworld reports that in their test of the latest version of the Windows phone 7 emulator, which includes Cut and Paste, it appears the issue of camera settings not being retained still remains.
He speculates that this indicated that this may not in fact be a bug, but a feature (according to Microsoft at least).
As we had learnt earlier, Windows phone 7 has a “Consistent Start Experience”
…whenever we click on an application from the Start it will always relaunch the application as if it wasn’t already running. This means that if the application was previously in the background (or Tombstoned) it will be terminated and restarted. Alternatively, clicking Back to get back to a running application will return the application to the foreground in the state it was in.
Given that this is Microsoft’s philosophy for Windows phone 7, and that they are not generally inclined to change their user experience, it may mean Microsoft does not intend to change this any time soon.
Unlocked emulator image for latest Windows Phone 7 version now available to download
From the category of “that did not take long”, an unlocked version of the latest Windows Phone 7 emulator image with cut and paste is now available for download at WindowsPhonehacker.com.
In the above video he gives a demo of copy and paste on the emulator in various scenarios, but he is however making a mistake is claiming a piece of copied text can only be pasted ones – dragging the correction bar to the right will reveal the paste icon for further operations.
Note that the Settings menu is at present inaccessible in the emulator. Read more on the procedure to get the emulator up and running, and find the download link at WindowsPhonehacker here.
Copy and Paste demoed on the Windows Phone 7 emulator
Here is a quick demo of copy and paste on the newly released updated Windows Phone 7 emulator, uploaded by pocketpc.ch.
They note it works simply and with no frills – text is selected with a long press, an icon pops up above the text and markers appear which can be moved. By tapping on the icon text can be copied to the clipboard, and an icon to insert the text appears above the keyboard.
As mentioned above, not elaborate, but it does obviously make the office integration in Windows phone 7 100% more useful.

Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools update now live, joins 1 million + SDK downloads
The developer update for Windows Phone 7, which includes Cut and Paste, is now available to download.
The tools supports the forthcoming addition of copy and paste, improved app performance and other enhancements for Windows Phone and will allow developers to build apps using some updated assemblies which will ship in the forthcoming Windows Phone OS update.
Microsoft also announced that there had been more than 1 million downloads of the SDK, with 27,000 registered developers and 7500 apps in Marketplace.
Microsoft has also arranged a new service which allows developers to buy contract-free but still carrier-locked devices via a partnership with Zones.com, a Windows Phone Interoperability site to help developers who have been creating phone applications on various platforms ramp up quickly on the Windows Phone 7 platform and lastly a developer day event on Wed February 16th at Mobile World Congress.

New Game Boy emulator for Windows Phone 7 in the works
We know these applications will never hit marketplace, but the homebrew crowd looks like they be receiving another emulator option soon, with Samuel Blanchard showing off a Game Boy Pocket Color emulator for Windows Phone 7
The app, which already appears polished, still lacks flash ram management and backup features, but this should come soon.
Read more on the app at Samuel’s blog here.
