HTC HD Mini passes through FCC on the way to destinations unknown

htchdminifcc

An HTC HD Mini with AT&T 3G bands (850 and 1900 Mhz) has passed through the FCC.  At present it is not clear where the device is heading to, as rumours of an AT&T release of the device have not really circulated, although a replacement for the HTC Pure/ Touch Diamond 2 on A&T may be possible.

Another likely destination is one of the Canadian networks, which do often carry HTC devices.

PhoneArena reviews the HTC HD Mini

PhoneArena has looked at the HTC HD Mini and have published their usual thorough review.

They score the device 8.5/10 and conclude:

So is there a reason why you should get a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 handset with Windows Phone 7 coming at the end of the year? Since none of the apps for the current-gen Windows Mobile phones will not work on Windows Phone 7, we believe users should have no hesitations when getting a WM device now. Looking at the existing crop of smartphones running this platform, we have to say the HTC HD mini is a perfect choice, due to its ease of use and reliability. Right now, the HD2 is the undisputed king of Windows phones, but if you’re not really into such great sizes, the HD mini is just for you.

HTC HD Mini compared to the HTC HD2

Pocketnow have published this video comparing the recently released HTC HD Mini with the older HTC HD2. Despite the HTC HD mini being called simply a smaller HTC HD2 the video actually shows significant differences in performance, user interface and application compatibility, with Pocketnow saying the smaller device with the HVGA screen does not support common applications such as SPB Mobile Shell or Skyfire, due to its lower resolution non-standard screen.

HTC HD Mini overview – part 2

Coolsmartphone have published part of their HTC HD2 video review.  In many ways the device is just a smaller, less powerful HD2, so if the size of the later device was your main issue this may be the device for you.

Another HTC HD2 mini unboxing

Coolsmartphone have published this hands-on video of the HTC HD mini, unboxed as traditional for that blog either in the car or in the kitchen.

Does anyone else feel the smartphone could have done with a little bit less bezel (or at least a D-pad) at the bottom? Let us know below.

This is a relatively low price for only the second Windows Mobile smartphone with a capacitive screen, and is close to £200 cheaper than the launch price of the HTC HD2.

HTC HD Mini reviewed

Techielobang.com have published this overview of the HTC HD Mini, HTC’s version of the HD2 for smaller pockets, both literally and figuratively.

The device has been called the new incarnation of the HTC Touch Diamond. Do our readers agree? Let us know below.

Another look at the HTC HD Mini

Here is another look at the HTC HD Mini, which seems to have been designed specifically with the rather diminutive Eric Lin of HTC in mind.

The video is published by CellphoneTrek who did come directly to the point regarding the upgradability to Windows phone 7, which of course the device does not have.  Clearly HTC sees these handsets as rather disposable rather than long-lasting investments.

HTC aims high with 4.5 million Q2 2010 target

According to Commercial Times (via Digitimes.com) HTC is expected to reach a new high water mark for quarterly shipments, and is widely expected to ship up to 4.5 million handsets in Q2 2010.

This number is more than a million more than the 3.3 to 3.5 million shipped in Q1 2010, and a great sign of recovery for the handset maker who shipped only around 11 million in the whole of 2009.

Amongst a variety of Android handsets, the HTC HD mini is also expected to help drive shipment growth in the second quarter, the paper said.

HTC’s increasingly high profile success has recently caught the eye of Apple, who is currently in the process of suing it for patent violation largely related to its use of the Android OS.

HTC shows of its H1 2010 phone collection

Pocketnow have published this video showing HTC’s collection of phones released so far in 2010, shown off by HTC’s Eric Lin at CTIA.

Shown off on the video is the HTC Smart, HTC HD2, HTC HD Mini and a variety of Android phones.  Interestingly Eric Lin revealed HTC’s new collection have been designed by One and Co, the design company HTC bought recently and who designed the iconic HTC Touch Diamond.

I must say, I am not really feeling the design of the HTC HD Mini, especially compared to the HTC HD2. Do our readers agree? Let us know below.

HTC HD Mini coming to O2

htchdminio2 CoolSmartphone has spotted the recently announced HTC HD Mini in O2 UK’s April catalogue.

The 3.2 inch HVGA device with its capacitive screen is being advertised to business users, much like its much larger version, the HTC HD2.

The handset was recently unveiled at Mobile World Congress and is only the second Windows Mobile smartphone with a capacitive screen, which is surely a selling point for those who find the HTC HD2’s awesome 4.3 inch screen a bit too much.

HTC HD Mini lock screen cab now available for download

The HTC HD Mini features a pretty nice lock screen, as can be seen from the video above.

Michyprima has now made the software available as a cab, which I have tested on the HTC HD2 and found to work pretty well.

Michyprima warns that the PIN lock screen however no longer works, so if you use this security on your phone this cab will not be suitable.

Download the cab here.

Thanks Fotone for the tip.

HD Mini facts

htc_hd_miniClove have just published a few little snippets of information of the HTC HD mini.

  • You can use it as a WiFi router
  • The phone antenna is actually on the removable back cover
  • HTC designed the inside to be as beautiful on the inside as it is outside

To me, it still doesn’t seem an attractive device. Yes, HTC call it “sensible” in size (clearly referring to the HD2), but HVGA? Is anyone genuinely excited by a screen resolution lower than that of the Diamond?

Given what wonderful things HTC can do with the HD2, is anyone else wondering why?
