HTC HD2 WP7 Multi-touch issue fixed

The HTC HD2 may be the greatest phone in the world, able to run Windows Mobile, Android, Linux and even Windows Phone 7.

However under Windows Phone 7 the phone had a multi-touch bug , requiring a user to touch the screen with both fingers at the exact same time when trying to pinch-to-zoom a picture or webpage

XDA-Developer AnDim has however squashed the bug  in the touchscreen driver, enabling proper multi-touch.

A ROM with the updated driver can be found  here or the new 2.1 version of the upgradeable ROM by Yuki and xboxmod. Or, if you’re running version 2.0 of the Back to the Future ROM, wait for a CAB file to easily update to the new driver.

DFT and Orange Team together create HTC HD2 ROM which can be updated normally by Microsoft

image

The Dark Forces Team and Orange Team have combined their forces and achieved the seemingly impossible – they have created a ROM for the HTC HD2 which can be updated normally like any other Windows Phone 7 handset over the Zune desktop client.

Beyond this the ROM also retains Root and ChevronWP7 status, meaning users are both free to edit the registry and side-load applications.

Lastly the ROM also allows custom packages to be side-loaded via Zune, making for the ultimate custom ROM machine.

The teams report this hack could be a model for all other Windows Phone 7 handsets, throwing the door open for wide customization without the fear of losing future updates from Microsoft

At present the process of updating the HTC HD2 is long, complicated and tedious, and is not recommended for casual users. It will also lock your SD card to Windows Phone 7, which can only be undone by a Nokia N97, which would prevent dual booting with Android for example.  The teams are working on a simpler method, and suggest casual users hang tight for this.

Braver users can read more in this xda-developers thead.

HTC HD2 gets USB Host

The Dark Forces Team, famous HTC hackers, have been working for some time on adding USB Host, which allows USB periferals to be added to phones, to the HTC HD2.

Their effort has not been without success, but they want to move on to other things, and have decided to release what they have achieved so far.

The current solution supports the Human Interface Devices profile, meaning mice and keyboards can be added, and also USB Mass Storage, meaning hard drives and pen drives are supported.  They warn that the implementation is still expirimental and a self-powered USB Hub or special cable may still be required.

If you are still sporting an old-style Windows Mobile 6.5 HTC HD2 and you like hacking, read more in the XDA-Dev thread here.

Microsoft amused by HTC HD2 Mango hackers

When we posted instructions on how to get Mango on the HTC HD2 one of the few comments we received was asking if we are posting instructions for obtaining warez now.

Of course we definitely do not endorse piracy, but rescuing one of the best Windows Mobile handsets from the gadget drawer seems more than enough reason to bend the rules.

It seems Microsoft agrees, and in a statement to AllthingsD about Mango being hacked onto the HTC HD2 Microsoft spokesman Bill Cox said:

We say tinker away with Mango and enjoy the juice, but beware the fine print — unlocking phones may void your warranty.”

That’s a great attitude for the company to have, and in line with the ethos of the company for the last few years of embracing hackers, be it of Windows Phone 7 or the Xbox 360.

In fact its open attitude to hackers likely saved Microsoft from the brunt of the recent wave of attacks against various companies like Sony, suggesting there is much to gain and little to lose from staying on the right side of some very smart people.

HTC HD2 Mango ROM now with working Marketplace and Side Loading available

That did not take long.  If you (understandably) held of upgrading your HTC HD2 to Mango due to the inability to install applications you will be glad to hear XDA-Dev member elfinlazz has corrected those particular issues, enabling side loading and including a working Marketplace fixer.

Early reports are also of issues with storage, Wi-Fi and Skydrive having been corrected.

Of course the 7592 build is earlier than the 7661 build currently available to developers, but then we have been told even this build is months old in any case.

Find the ROM in this XDA-Developer thread here.

Instructions for getting Mango on your HTC HD2

Pocketnow have published this brief guide to getting Windows phone Mango on your HTC HD2.

The instructions are pretty simple:-

1. Follow the instructions to download and install magdlr if you haven’t done so already
2. Download the Mango files from XDA
3. Put your HD2 into USB Flasher mode when prompted on HD2 boot up
4. Run DWI.exe from PC with HD2 connected

Note that Mango on the HTC HD2, while it works pretty well, is crippled by not being unlocked and not having Marketplace access, making it less than suitable as your daily driver.

Mango demoed on the HTC HD2 (video)

Backlashsid have published this video demonstrating beta 1 of Mango running on the HTC HD2.  While many people are eager to get their hands on the update, the build that is floating around at the moment is far from complete, lacking Marketplace access and being otherwise locked, meaning apps can not even be side loaded, has a variety of bugs and even a HTML5 browser.

In short, while a ROM is out there it is advisable to wait a bit longer for a more polished product.

The Dark Force Team playing with Mango?

hdmangoThe DFT has been showing of NoDo running on the HTC HD2, and in the process may have let slip something possibly more interesting.

In a device to the side of the main demo there is a brief view of a HTC HD2 showing the program list and a never seen before search button which may solve an issue that’s becoming increasingly troublesome for Windows phone 7 users – the ever lengthening apps list.

If Mango is actually floating around it should mean we will see a lot more about the OS update, which is set to bring IE9 and multi-tasking, and suspected other entertainment-focussed improvements.

See the video in question of NoDo running on the HTC HD2 after the break, keeping an eye out for the “slip” at the 2:45 min mark.

HD2 also getting Nodo Too! Ty Sprint

Oh the HTC HD2, what a magnificent piece of hardware you have being the first 4.3 in. screen phone and the first with a snapdragon processor running more OSes than I have pairs of shoes thanks to xda developers. However, as the rom scene for the HD2 has grown a bit thanks to different developers, a question that I had on my mind was: Is the HD2 getting Nodo? Sure enough, it could be!

Yes I know. Users hate speculation stories, so before you go angry mob, hear me out. About a week ago, 911sniper leaked a very interesting CDMA rom – the HTC 7 Pro that does include the NoDo update. Well, you and I both know xda-developers and how they will take a leak and go full blast with it – heck have you seen what they’ve done with the nook color and honeycomb? Well so far, we know in order to flash any custom rom on any device, the device must have hspl (hard spl) installed. Well, no wp7 devices have that except the HD2. The other item that is necessary for a cooked rom is relocking modules to allow nodo to boot.

At this point, both developers and users are waiting for DFT or someone to create relocking tools so chefs can release some NoDo goodness. Now wouldn’t it be funny if this was released before Microsoft officially released NoDo? I know it would be mildly amusing to me. Anyway, take a look at the progress by hitting up this link right here to hear some technobanter about the progress

Microsoft comments on Windows Phone 7 HTC HD2 port

With the Windows phone 7 HTC HD2 port progressing nicely, with the latest being custom ROMs with Live services activated, Pocketnow decided to ask Microsoft to comment on the hack.

On the HTC HD2 port, the answer was relatively tame.

“Microsoft does not support Windows Phones that have been altered from manufacturer and carrier specifications and we caution that such alterations can dramatically impact reliability, performance, compatibility and security”.

One of the ways to easily activate Live Services on a  hacked HTC HD2’s is to simply ask Microsoft for an activation key. Microsoft did not however seem very eager to continue this practice.

Microsoft “does make product keys available for select support scenarios” but “these keys are not intended to allow for the installation of software onto unsupported hardware. We are investigating whether or not additional steps are needed to discourage the improper use of product keys”.

In general however it seems that while Microsoft is certainly not planning to do anything to help hackers running Windows phone 7 on the HTC HD2, they are also not planning to go after people who are, at least not yet.

When we first learnt about the tight restrictions involved in Windows phone 7 most were quite concerned that custom ROMs will never come to the OS.

Comparison of the HTC HD2 and HTC HD7 running WP7

HDBlog.it have published this above video showing a guide to installing Windows phone 7 on the HTC HD2 (and are also hosting the rom on their website, for those looking), and have also spent some time comparing the performance of both devices.

Interestingly, while the HTC HD2 is pretty fast, it is still somewhat laggy on occasion compared to the HTC HD7, showing that more than a bit of optimization went into the HTC HD7 before its release.
