O2 HTC HD2 gets a ROM update … the same one 2 months ago
HTC has just announced a new ROM update, and this one comes with a side helping of déjà vu, as the ROM version appears to be exactly the same as the one released 2 months ago.
HTC HD2 ROM 1.72.206.3 for O2 only is now available once more for download, and just like on the 27th April when we wrote about it punters should be aware that installing it will wipe their device, and that a backup of their user data (including HTC Footprints!) is essential.
Read more and download the update here (and of course please let us know if there is anything new this time around).
T-Mobile HTC HD2 now available for only $0.01 at Amazon
As Windows Phone 7 draws ever closer, the HTC HD2 on T-Mobile is getting ever cheaper. Amazon, who recently sold the device for $50 on contract, is now offering the 4.3 inch screened smartphone for only $0.01.
Of course, with Windows Phone 7 so close, the lack of an upgrade to the new OS is a real sticking point. However it is clear that Windows Phone 7 will be a much less capable OS on first release than Windows Mobile 6.5, so for users who appreciate that, it may still be the best choice even all the way into 2011.
Read more about the deal, which expires tomorrow, at Amazon here.

Ultimate Geek out 2 – 2 player 2 controller emulated games on the HTC HD2
Some things are done just for the heck of it, and playing a 2 player game on your HTC HD2 with 2 controllers falls into that Amazing but not exactly practical category that however still shows how amazing Windows Mobile, the developer and the HTC HD2 is.
The above is the latest version of the Smartgear emulator version 2.0.17 with support for multiple Bluetooth controllers, in the video above demonstrated on a few games, some of which are pretty nice.
2.0.17 is currently in beta, but the software supports GameBoy Color, NES, GameGear, MasterSystem, TurboGrafx-16, and Genesis/MegaDrive systems, and can be purchased from bitbanksoftware for only $10 here, which includes life time updates and the use of the software on the desktop also (A real steal I would say).
The latest progress of the software can be followed in this Modaco thread here.
HTC HD2 now available from Amazon for only $50
Here’s one of Amazon’s deals that are priced “too cheap to mention”. They are selling T-Mobile USA’s flagship device for only $50 with a T-Mobile contract, which is pretty close to free.
Get in on the deal by checking out Amazon here.
Transparent Body Shell cures HTC HD2 kickstand envy
A kickstand is a pretty useful addition to a phone, and I am sure it is just one of the features that make HTC HD2 owners look longingly at the HTC Evo.
Fortunately there is a simple solution that wont require you to spend $50 on an a bulky official extended battery and will also provide some protection.
The video above by Docextreme1 (who is doing a series of HD2 tips) shows of the Body Glove Plastic Transparent Case with Kick Stand which will keep your back and sides pristine while providing some shock absorption where it to fall on a corner, and also comes with a handy kick stand that unlike others work in portrait and landscape more.
The case is available in T-Mobile stores and online here for around $20.

HTC Leo-S with keyboard coming?

Xmoo, who makes a sport out of collecting ROMs and early prototypes, has found some evidence for a new version of the HTC HD2, this time with a keyboard.
Contained in registry keys in the ROM, it makes mention of a HTC Leo-S with the right registry keys for a slide-out QWERTY device (having said that, current HTC HD2 ROMs contain the same registry keys).
At the moment it is not clear whether this will be a last hurrah for Windows Mobile devices or a smashing launch Windows Phone 7 device from HTC, but either will be welcome at this point.
XMoo expects the new HTC ROM (1.78.911.1 with OS 5.2.21905.5.0.93) to be released soon. Unfortunately this is still not a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 ROM yet.
The relevant tweets are below.
- @HTC Leo-S should be a Leo with KEYBOARD (3.01.405.T1), normal @HTC HD2 will get upgrade 1.78.911.1 with OS 5.2.21905.5.0.93

HTC HD2 used to MASSIVELY geek out
I cant think of any device more worthy of geek credit than the HTC HD2. Trekpropguy seems to think the same, using the HTC HD2 as the basis for an “authentic” LCARS wrist panel for a star trek uniform.
He writes:
My completed interpretation of the LCARS wrist panel for the Enterprise E Hazard Team. Touchscreen is functional with sounds and animations. This was made using SwishMAX, and Flash Lite for Windows Mobile. LCARS display made by me using vector graphics. The phone I am using is my HTC HD2, which is a perfect size for the panel.

HTC HD2 plagued by digitizer, stability problems?
UK based mobile phone industry magazine mobilenewscwp.co.uk claims mobile phone repair centres are being inundated for repairs for faulty digitizers on the HTC HD2 in UK.
“This is a massive issue. We are getting 10 requests a day to service this part on the HD2. If the digitiser breaks, often the LCD has to be replaced as well. And we are having trouble getting hold of new digitisers.” said Turn On Your Mobile proprietor Mark Pollak.
Unfortunately is more than hardware that’s the issue, with issues with freezes and crashes requiring a soft reset (which means removing the battery on the HD2) being a particular problem.
“It’s a really good phone but it tends to crash a lot. It’s these little niggles that stop it being a great phone.” said Complete Communications proprietor Adam Nyman said.
Using a stock Vodafone ROM on my own HTC HD2 I must agree the device is not as stable as when I used a cooked XDA ROM, an option not available to most punters in UK, which suggests HTC needs to do some more work on the carrier ROMs they are releasing, and that the device could really have done with an OTA ROM update feature.
Is your HTC HD2 giving you problems too? Let us know below.

HTC HD2 vs HTC EVO 4G
Wirefly has published this video comparing two of HTC’s greatest handsets, the HTC HD2 on T-Mobile and the Sprint HTC EVO 4G.
While the specs of the HTC HD2 is clearly from last year, with a 5 megapixel camera vs 8 megapixel for example, the device remains very attractive and functional, and does hold its own quite well.
Any HD2 owners switching to the EVO, or are you waiting for HTC’s next command performance with whatever Windows Phone 7 handset they magic up in a few months? Let us know below.
Blockbuster app demoed on the HTC HD2
The Blockbuster app on the HTC HD2 is pretty ground breaking for a Windows Mobile handset, and the Pocketnow video above demoes the app in action.
Downloading a full video over WIFI takes about 40 min, so does require a bit of forethought, but apparently the quality can not be faulted.
Read more about the service at Pocketnow here.
New HTC HD2 ROM brings application framework, Aero-snap feature
Rouzb3h has created a new cooked ROM for the HTC HD2 that includes a programming framework which allows for the creation of lightweight attractive apps with interesting UI features.
He writes:
You don’t need to get a ROM,You need a ROM that Gets You!
The philosophy behind the Prestige X ROM is to deliver a unique light-weighted, yet stylish ROM, that has a new atmosphere to it, & comes with an extra toolset, exclusively made for our ROM.
Prestige Xtras are fully animated programs, made to makes every day’s tasks much simpler, in user-friendly UI that takes the most advantage from HD2′s hardware.
We are still working on the visuals and toolset of the ROM, so it may change from what you see in the pictures. Until the release, all your Ideas are welcomed
The ROM is currently being beta-tested, but as can be seen in the video above has some pretty interesting features.
Read more about it in this XDA-Dev thread here.
