HTC has huge plans for Sense, do they include Windows Phone 7? (Updated)
Forbes spoke to Drew Bamford, HTC’s head of User Experience about their plans for the future of HTC Sense.
Drew spoke enthusiastically about HTC Sense adding a cloud-based component, and plans to use it as a content delivery platform and part of the digital living room, and also as a place to add more “natural interactions.”
Drew spoke of a ereader application integrated in Sense, which will help deliver music, magazines, newspapers and video to users, both in Europe and the USA.
“Our intention is to build experiences that further integrate content acquisition and discovery and release them in U.S. products,” said Bamford.
He also spoke about the HTC Media Link, a DLNA adaptor with HDMI output, which he described as a “mini set-top box” and “a phone with no screen” and imagined a future with phones were portable DVRs, collecting and storing shows that can then be played wirelessly to TVs.
He also spoke with excitement about video calling and 4G. “At some point, you can imagine replacing your home Internet service with your 4G phone,” he says. “I think we’re on the cusp of that transformation where mobile products and living room life collide.”
“Over the next year or so, we’ll be taking Sense and making it a richer, more capable, more compelling experience,” says Bamford. “We don’t plan on abandoning the foundation of Sense we’ve built so far.”
Of course all of this is all very interesting, but with the user experience now firmly in the hands of Microsoft, there is a question if HTC will extend these efforts to their Windows Phone 7 devices. It is of note that HTC’s Windows Phone 7 handsets do not support DLNA used by HTC Media Link, and none feature TV out like many of HTC’s Android handsets. HTC also did not release an ereader app on their Windows Phone 7 handsets, despite having the same feature on their Windows Mobile handsets earlier.
On the other hand HTC did find a way of bringing some Sense features, like HTC Attentive Phone, on Windows Phone 7 handsets, so the company clearly has some scope and commitment to Windows Phone 7, so we hope to see more Sense on Windows phone 7 in the future.
Update:
Also from Forbes we have Drew Bamford addressing the Windows Phone 7 question directly.
“HTC’s goal is for the Sense experience to span all of our products,” says Bamford. “Microsoft has its own goal of consistency across Windows Phone 7 products. I think it comes down to working closely with Microsoft to do as much as we can.”
He continued:“We have a good relationship with Microsoft so we’re continuing to work with them to figure out how to enable a Sense experience without breaking their model,” “Our expectation is that we will be able to do more over time.”

HTC’s Sense director threatens to leave Windows Phone due to customization constraints.

HTC Sense has recently been accused of being unnecessary eye candy.
A self-confessed Android lover, Drew Bamford, Director of User Experience at HTC and the man in charge of HTC Sense, complained of being constrained by the rigors of Windows Phone 7 customization restrictions.
Talking about the lack of the ability to deeply customize the user experience on Windows phone 7, he said :
.. certainly it’s a real constraint the kinds of things they are enabling. I suspect that those constraints will loosen in time allowing us to do more. Microsoft will let us loosen the reins a bit, I wouldn’t preclude HTC in the future doing something on a different operating system or even doing our own operating system, I don’t think that’s out of the question, because our goal is to address the needs of our users, and if we don’t have the freedom to do what we need to on a given platform we’ll try another platform or create our own.
We will do everything necessarily to create the best experience possible. Right now working with Microsoft and Google is the best approach, but that might not be the case in the future.
One of HTC’s strength is that we are always trying new things, new form factors, new partners, and that’s what’s kept us in the race for so long.
With the release of Windows phone 7, which made HTC’s Sense largely redundant on the Windows platform, HTC’s handsets have had to compete on design and value for money, an area which OEMs like Sony Ericsson would prefer to avoid. HTC’s customizations, while doing a great job at making Windows Mobile more palatable to consumers, have also often been blamed for stability problems. Even some of HTC’s current crop of handsets have been blamed for having some unique issues, which has long led to questions whether the benefit was worth the cost.

HTC’s phone dialler Sense enhancements demoed
Pocketnow have published this video demonstrating HTC’s enhancements to the Windows Phone 7 dialler, which brings much of the tweaks we have become used to in HTC Sense on Windows Mobile.
The software comes in a separate download, HTC Attentive Phone, which we have written about previously, which allows one to do flip to mute, flip to turn on the speaker phone, enable louder ringer when the proximity sensor is active, and lastly reduce the volume of the ring tone when the phone is picked up.
Like much of the software which are currently differentiating devices, the software will only be available via HTC’s OEM specific marketplace, and not be available on other devices.
HTC promises deeper Sense in future Windows Phone 7 handsets
We have by now all seen how HTC intends to implement their Sense UI in Windows Phone 7, and its fair to say that, besides the eye candy, most people are not terribly impressed.
In an exclusive interview with FierceWireless, HTC CEO Peter Chou promised future versions would do better.
"Initially, we don’t have time to bring things on top of that," he said. "But over time we will innovate on top of that to provide some HTC experience."
"I don’t think we would do complete Sense UI on Windows Phone 7," he said. "However, I will say that we will innovate differently to improve the experience and to get some HTC unique and differentiated experience on Windows Phone 7 in the future."
An HTC spokesman clarified:
“In the long term, with the Sense experience, we are looking for ways to enhance the user experience using HTC innovation. … Sense, by definition, is a way for HTC to improve the user experience in both big and small ways–which we will certainly work to do with Windows Phone 7 devices. But, if this does not include a fully revised user interface, that does not mean that it doesn’t have a form of the Sense experience–it may just be expressed in ways that do not include the interface."
Hopefully in the future HTC’s Sense on Windows Phone 7 will improve the user experience in much the same way they did on Windows Mobile, with features such as USB Mass Storage mode and WIFI tethering, both features presently missing from Windows Phone 7.

Is this HTC Sense for Windows Phone 7–I think so!
A YouTube account, Dailaphone, have uploaded a concept video of HTC Sense on Windows Phone 7, and it sure looks great!
There is absolutely nothing subtle about the user interface and animations, which is a massive departure from Windows Phone 7, but may be exactly what the consumer wary of Authentic Digital is looking for.
For the record, due to the extremely sophistication of the animations I personally feel the video does depict a real HTC concept, but of course the final deliverable may be very different.

Thanks Mobile Paddy for the tip.

HTC HD2 envy – TouchFlo3D for the iPhone
We know HTC’s Sense UI is pretty attractive, such that HTC even transplanted it onto Android.
Jailbreaking iPhone owners have however not been left out of the game, with quite a few HTC Sense themes for iPhone around. Here is another, which takes the hack even further, to include animated.
Obsessionxyz writes:
To begin, YES i know there is tons of this modded theme here, but none has satisfied me, so I have rewritten the alot of codes and combined various javascripts to make this work. ok the theme now, it has a working animated flipclock, and animated weather, so far the same as others, but, this one you can actually tap on to update. which is the way i want it.
I have recreate all weather elements myself, and compare to the original (Weather Elements v3) the file size was huge, mine is only 5MB big, (the whole theme)
As for the animated flipclock, that also have i recreated the images. if you want to have the theme i will also create AM/PM images.
If you succumbed to the dark side, this hack which gives you a UI which is actually a bit more than a grid of icons may make you feel a bit more at home.

Latest version of HTC Sense allows deletion of e-mail, does not go far enough
Pocketnow has discovered that the latest version of HTC Sense 2.5 build 2011 contains one particularly useful feature – the ability to delete e-mail directly from the Sense interface.
While this is a welcome addition, and another indication that HTC continues to refine their interface, I think adding a small menu item really shows a failure of imagination.
On this occasion the easy and fast deletion of e-mail really calls for a multi-touch gesture, possible in the form of scrunching the email up. Not only would this have been an amazing visual (and possibly auditory) effect, but would have helped move us even further away from the WIMP UI.
So in short HTC, thank you, but how about trying harder next time?
HTC’s latest Sense build can be downloaded in NRG’s ROM at XDA-Dev here.
Can any of our readers think of more places were gestures could be used instead of menu items? Let us know below.
New HTC Sense 2.5 Manilla Mod brings extra screens, extended appointments
|
Base screen |
swipe down |
swipe up |
swipe up again |
Manilla modding has a long history, but with Manilla 2.5 requiring a lot more horse power than Manilla 2.1 there has been a bit of a split in the modding community, with many hacks only coming to the 2.1 version used by most people.
Thankfully the latest one, by Co0kiemonster, is intended directly for the HTC HD2 and brings some neat features.
The mod brings the standard 16/20 QuickLinks mod, and extended appointments view, clear view, grid view in add program and multiline text labels.

HTC’s director of user experience interviewed
Feel free to ignore anything after the 22 minute mark in this Engadget show video, during which HTC’s Director of User Experience is interviewed regarding the evolution of HTC’s user experience on their handhelds.
While the most striking feature of this video is Engadget’s bias against Windows Mobile, it is still interesting to see the ongoing design process in action, and see a glimpse of what’s to come in future iterations of HTC Sense.
