No WM 6.5 for HTC Touch HD – were busy, its too old, and no-one will update in any case
It is no surprise to hear that the HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro and HTC Touch HD will not be getting updates to Windows Mobile 6.5, despite for example the hardware between the Touch HD and Touch Diamond 2 being virtually identical and the Touch Pro being the development environment for Windows Mobile 6.5.
It is however useful to hear HTC explicitly give their reasons, rather than speculating. HTC Benelux director Mark Moons did just that. Tweakers.net reports him saying that HTC felt it would take too much time for HTC to make Windows Mobile 6.5 suitable for these ‘old’ phones. Moreover, people with these older HTC smartphones less inclined to do an update in any case.
For phones lucky enough to get the update (that would be the HTC Touch Diamond 2, HTC Touch Pro 2 and HTC Snap) the update should be available next month. The Touch phones will also get the latest version of TouchFlo3D, now renamed HTC Sense.
If HTC right to spend their time developing new phones (like the excellent HD2 for example) rather than supporting older ones? let us know in the comments.

Verizon emerges from a time tunnel – working on a HTC Touch Diamond
It seems Verizon, who is always last with the latest had sets, have been working on releasing an HTC Touch Diamond after all.
The BGR has published exclusive pictures of the device being used for testing, and is typical with a Verizon device, its not just the same version as released by others. Verizon have done their usual “tweaking”, and the smartphone sports only 128 MB RAM vs the 192 in all the other Diamonds.
To compensate for this travesty however they replaced the 4 GB Flash storage with a microSD card, which in this day and age of 16 GB memory cards can only be considered a good thing. In addition they will be releasing the device with the faceted rather than flat back as Sprint did.
The full specs are as follows:
Of course its not certain this device will even come out, since nothing in this regard has been leaked yet, and even if it does it seems by that time many of us will be sporting a Touch Diamond 2, but I guess better late than never.
HTC Touch Diamond making a belated visit to South Korea
Nearly 10 months after its launch, and with its successor already announced, HTC’s original Touch Diamond is being released on SK Telecom’s network.
How this device will fare against South Korea’s super-phones like the Samsung T*Omnia remains to be seen, but, likely due to the long delays and lack of features popular on Korea, like Mobile TV, prospects are not very good.
HTC’s last attempt at the market, the HTC Touch Dual did not fare too well, only managing 20 000 sales since its Korean release in July 2008, 9 months after its European release in June 2007.
New G-sensor software solves in call screen blanking problem
A new app has been developed on XDA-Developers.com which solves the annoying problem brought on by the lack of a proximity sensor on HTC’s now older devices like the Touch Diamond, Pro and HD.
With these devices, the screen switches off soon after a phone call is started, preventing you from pressing on-screen buttons with your ear, but also preventing you from navigating various dial tone menus one often encounter. The only way to access these keys is to manually switch the device back on again.
The application, called Touch In Call Tweak, uses the G-sensor in the above devices to detects, while a phone call is ongoing, when a device is vertical (and presumably therefore held up to your ear) and switches the screen off, but also detects when the device is held horizontally, as when entering keys, and switches back on again.
According to the thread participants the software works pretty well, and is reducing annoyance levels all over the world.

New G-Sensor software gets easy GUI
As is usual with these things, the new HTC Diamond 2 ROM has brought with it many software updates which have trickled down, courtesy of XDA-Developers, to older devices.
One such improvement is the new G-sensor accelerometer service, which now allows one to enable rotation of applications by simply adding the windows class to a list in the registry.
While this is a lot simpler than running larger apps like Gsen, and should be more reliable because it does not require any 3rd party apps, finding our the window class of your favourite app is not that simple.
G-Config by makeveral solves this problem by allowing one to add applications to the registry list rather simply. One only need to run the G-Config, remove the stylus and insert it when the app in question is in the foreground. After the app is added to the list G-Config is no longer needed and can be closed.
To download G-Config visit this XDA-Developers thread here.
New TouchFlo3D hack enables easier Program launching
Renowned TouchFlo3D hacker showaco has turned his attention to the Programs tab, and the result is seen in the screen shots above.
The new programs tab either shows ALL your apps as a list or as a scrollable grid of items which I personally feel looks a lot more attractive than HTC’s solution, and has the benefit of being automatically populated.
Read more about the app and download the relevant cabs from XDA-Developers here.

New HTC Touch Diamond ROM updates
Its nice to see HTC has not completely forgotten their older products now the new generation has been announced.
HTC has just released a new ROM update for the HTC Touch Diamond, which provides the following fixes:
Improved Functions and Fixes
1. When you launch the Camera while the system is working on other programs, the preview screen may become black.
2. When playing a video, sometimes a portion of the video will be cut off a little bit.
3. Fixes Audio playback problem with the speaker. Specific issues: sometimes the music will turn off and on after 10 minutes, or there is a buzzing sound or no sound at all.
4. Fixes the problem of not being able to receive MMS when in standby mode.
5. When launching music via the Music tab on TouchFLO 3D, the sound may intermittently turn off for a second and come back on.
While some of these may seem rather minor, I have experienced number 5 myself, and have had to soft reset my phone to restore sound to the music player. If you exprience these issues to a significant degree this update may very well be your answer.

HTC Touch Diamond vs HTC Touch Diamond 2 – size comparison
CNET Asia has published some pictures of the old generation HTC Touch Diamond vs the newer, showing the size difference between the two.
At 53.1 x 107.85 x 13.7 millimetres the HTC Touch Diamond 2 is bigger in all dimensions than the original Diamond at 51 x 102 x 11.5 millimetres. The pictures however show that it is only really the length of the device which is obviously larger, and this of course is a good fit for the much larger screen.

Verizon to Release HTC Touch Diamond, offer Omnia for $99 in March?
Well look who showed up all late to the party??
It’s Verizon and it’s not even right to call it “fashionably” late at this point but they will be releasing the HTC Touch Diamond in March. The Diamond has been talked about ad nauseum yet still is a very cool device. Yet Sprint released the Touch Diamond back in September and even it’s bed buddy Alltell released this last year but as they say, better late then never.
Another interesting tidbit I found out about is that Verizon will be offering it’s Samsung Omnia for $99 after a 2 year contract. That’s a VERY good price for what is a power packed smartphone. Hmm, Touch Diamond and Omnia on the same carrier, I smell a catfight.
Thanks to Engadget Mobile for the heads up. Click here for this and more info on verizon’s plans for next month.
