Android on HTC HD(English Video)

If you are still upset with HTC for not providing a Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the HTC Touch HD here’s a chance to dabble with the dark side easily.

Android 2.0.1 was recently hacked to work on the HTC Touch HD and now we have a English video to go with it. The video shows Android working pretty well with the HD even thought there are still some bugs and connectivity issues like no Wifi or Bluetooth. There are also speed problems, as you can tell from the video, the builds have extreme lag problems that should be fixed soon. This is still a test build, and soon enough there should be a new one that has better integration and other things to better the performance.

The system uses haret, meaning there is no flashing involved, and your system gets restored back to Windows Mobile on soft reset.

Red camera issues on things other than the HD2?

From the images below, it’s clear that the HD2 isn’t alone when it comes to red tints on cameras.

This image posted over at XDA-Developers is from the HTC Touch HD.

And this is from the Motorola Droid.

And this is from GSM Arenas review of the Nokia N97.

Clearly, they all exhibit some kind of red tint, and on such a range of devices, manufacturers and even on a range of OS platforms, perhaps there’s something wrong with the camera chips themselves?

No WM 6.5 for HTC Touch HD – were busy, its too old, and no-one will update in any case

oldhd It is no surprise to hear that the HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro and HTC Touch HD will not be getting updates to Windows Mobile 6.5, despite for example the hardware between the Touch HD and Touch Diamond 2 being virtually identical and the Touch Pro being the development environment for Windows Mobile 6.5.

It is however useful to hear HTC explicitly give their reasons, rather than speculating. HTC Benelux director Mark Moons did just that. Tweakers.net reports him saying that HTC felt it would take too much time for HTC to make Windows Mobile 6.5 suitable for these ‘old’ phones. Moreover, people with these older HTC smartphones less inclined to do an update in any case.

For phones lucky enough to get the update (that would be the HTC Touch Diamond 2, HTC Touch Pro 2 and HTC Snap) the update should be available next month. The Touch phones will also get the latest version of TouchFlo3D, now renamed HTC Sense.

If HTC right to spend their time developing new phones (like the excellent HD2 for example) rather than supporting older ones? let us know in the comments.

HTC drops price of HTC Touch HD in Singapore, presaging a replacement?

HTC has announced a price drop for the HTC Touch HD in Singapore. The device now clocks in at SGD $1140.00 ($799), down from S$1388 ($972) 10 months ago when it was introduced.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone is currently ripe for replacement, with the much rumoured HTC Leo the most likely prospect.

Another look at a great Manilla 2.5 mod

We saw a glimpse of this HTC Leo modded ROM from XDA-Deverlopers.com, created using Max TF3D, but this version, demoed on Starbase64’s lovely HTC Touch HD deserved another look, especially as a high quality video shows the sophistication of the work very well.

Does the availability of these kind of mods give you pause in switching from HTC’s Windows Mobile devices to Samsung’s often better specified ones? Let us know in the comments.

Industrial robot controlled by HTC Touch HD

In this video we see a Fanuc M-6iB industrial robot being controlled wirelessly using a HTC Touch HD and some custom .Net code.

The feat itself is of course not that amazing, but its nice to see a Windows Mobile phone being put to a use outside the box once in a while.

HTC CEO – “We will always have more flagship products on Windows Mobile”

manlyhd1 Mobinaute interviewed Frédéric Tassy, CEO of HTC for France and Benelux and has published the result today. The interview was heavily focussed on HTC’s Android products, but HTC’s commitment to Windows Mobile continued to shine through.

Mr Tassy confirmed that Windows Mobile will always be their lead platform, saying “We will always be more flagship products on Windows Mobile.”

He went on to reveal that the Windows Mobile powered HTC Touch HD remains their best-selling European phone, despite the launch of the HTC G1 and HTC Magic more recently.

Regarding the iPhone, Tassy was not afraid to talk some smack.

“But I think at the end of the year, the iPhone will become just another product. We have been in discussion for many months with mobile operators, I can assure you they want something else now."

On a side note, I wonder how many more best sellers HTC would have if they included 3.5 mm headphone jacks in all their phones…

I personally feel most attractive feature of the application is its user-friendly and intuitive user interface, for which the developer should be congratulated (others may disagree )

HTC Touch HD Zoom bar hack demoed

We have written about this great, that changes the app keys on the HTC Touch HD into a hardware Zoom bar before. Apparently the software is not quite ready yet, but the author did upload this video of the app in action to keep us salivating.

The app seems to work particularly smoothly, so I am sure many people already running the Touch Diamond 2 software on their HD cant wait for the app to show up.

Zoom bar coming to your HTC Touch HD

There is not much difference between the HTC Touch Diamond 2 and the HTC Touch HD (and what is there is mainly towards the HD) but there is one desirable feature the HD certainly lacks – the Zoom bar.

It seems XDA-Developer.com hacker namuk was not going to leave that deficit lie however. He has created some software which turns the 4 keys (phone call start, end, home and back) into a Zoom bar, and has it functioning in in Opera Mobile, the photo application, camera application and Pocket Office. The normal function of the keys can be accessed by a long press on the button.

The software has not been released yet, but the first beta should be available on the 21/5/09. With many Touch HD’s already running the Touch Diamond 2 version of TouchFlo3D this development will make it even harder for buyers to choose between these two great devices.

TouchFlo3D 2 improvements – the SMS app

Pocketnow has published these two pictures of the SMS app with and without HTC’s TouchFlo3D 2 enhancements.

As can be seen, the before app is pretty stark and utilitarian, but the HTC version looks much better, featuring contact pictures and the ability to quickly switch to other methods of communication.
