HTC Fuze saving lives
We have written earlier on HTC Touch Pro’s being used by the military to enable them to be more efficient, but here is a story of the other side of the coin – the very same phone being used to save lives instead.
Patients who have chronic wounds and may be immobilized can now receive treatment in their homes by experienced clinicians who collaborate remotely with certified wound care specialists miles away. Wound Technology Network is using wireless technology services from AT&T* and empowering healthcare professionals with smart mobile devices to diagnose and prescribe treatments for patients with chronic wounds anytime, anywhere.
Under a two year agreement with AT&T, Wound Technology Network will equip its clinical staff including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants across South Florida and Southern California with HTC FUZE(TM) smart mobile devices when providing care in patient’s homes. Clinical staff will use the devices to access an application developed by iVisit, which creates videoconferencing tools for mobile devices and PCs, and speak live with a wound care specialist at Wound Technology Network’s tele-health center who will assist them to assess their patients’ wounds and perform the necessary treatment. To aid in the treatment process, clinical staff will also capture images of the patient’s wounds using the HTC FUZE(TM) and transmit the images to the wound care specialists to upload onto an electronic medical record which is immediately faxed to the patient’s primary care physician.
Until now, immobile patients and often those with chronic wounds relied heavily upon transport services for access to treatment, which often accounted for delayed diagnosis, prolonged hospital visits, and unnecessarily high treatment costs. Now having clinicians equipped with smart mobile devices, immobile patients have access to expert specialists for real-time diagnosis and treatment.
“Here at Wound Technology Network, we recognize that consistently delivering the highest quality wound care is difficult, but with the help of AT&T, we are able to deliver all the advantages of physician based services while we are treating patients in the comfort of their home,” said George Pollack, Chief Technology Officer. “Not only are our specialists able to deliver on-site quality care in real-time, they are able to aid in significantly minimizing the healing time of patients and the overall cost of their treatment.”

No WM 6.5 for HTC Touch HD – were busy, its too old, and no-one will update in any case
It is no surprise to hear that the HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro and HTC Touch HD will not be getting updates to Windows Mobile 6.5, despite for example the hardware between the Touch HD and Touch Diamond 2 being virtually identical and the Touch Pro being the development environment for Windows Mobile 6.5.
It is however useful to hear HTC explicitly give their reasons, rather than speculating. HTC Benelux director Mark Moons did just that. Tweakers.net reports him saying that HTC felt it would take too much time for HTC to make Windows Mobile 6.5 suitable for these ‘old’ phones. Moreover, people with these older HTC smartphones less inclined to do an update in any case.
For phones lucky enough to get the update (that would be the HTC Touch Diamond 2, HTC Touch Pro 2 and HTC Snap) the update should be available next month. The Touch phones will also get the latest version of TouchFlo3D, now renamed HTC Sense.
If HTC right to spend their time developing new phones (like the excellent HD2 for example) rather than supporting older ones? let us know in the comments.
Make your own HTC Touch Pro cable
Before After
A HTC Touch Pro video out cable is pretty cheap, but if you are like me and have a rats nest of cables lying in a corner and is handy with a soldering iron you may prefer making your own.
Audible_paradigm from XDA-Developers.com has published a guide for doing just that, from a spare corded earphone cable and a spare RCA Cable.

Phonenews.com reports that Verizon is set to release new firmware, version 1.08 for HTC Touch Pro, which will bring a host of new features.
The first is the unlocking of the GPS receiver on the device, meaning GPS functionality in applications like Google Maps and Windows Live Search for Mobile will work without issue.
The next is the addition of Visual Voice mail which debuted on the Samsung Omnia on Verizon, and will come at a $3/month charge.
Lastly is improvements in voice quality due to the addition of new audio codecs.
Phonenews is hosting the new ROM on their servers here.

FCC documentation show CDMA/ GSM Touch Pro 2 has US GSM disabled
Bad news for Windows Mobile fans hoping to use the dual mode Sprint Touch Pro 2 to roam on AT&T or T-Mobile. According to a recent FCC filing for the device the device will be SIM locked via its firmware to forbid any use on these local networks, meaning it will only be of use overseas.
While the intention is quite clear, and the functionality of the device will remain intact for overseas use, it must still be disappointing to have the potential of the device hobbled in this way.
Here’s hoping the PPCGeeks lot will be able to figure out and remove this unnecessary obstacle.

Amazing hardware hack brings colour to the HTC Touch Pro
Most hardware hacks are not for the faint-hearted, and this one is no exception. PPCGeeks member Bigshady had become tired of the while ring of light around the D-Pad on the HTC Touch Pro and decided to personalize it a bit. Soon after, with a bit id disassembly, a firm hand and replacement coloured LED’s his Touch Pro not sports a rainbow of colours.
Fortunately micro-soldering is not the only way to achieve the look. Disassembling your Touch Pro and using coloured sharpies on the LED and silicone windows behind the keys seem to work nearly as well, and is much less likely to leave you in tears.

Great Fuze TV-Out hack – TV out for $2.79
The HTC Touch Pro/ HTC Fuze has, in its TV out, a great feature, but it only works with a relatively expensive $21.99 HTC TV out cable. For a feature that will not be used very often it can be a bit pricy, but I think at $2.79 it becomes a no-brainer.
This hack, discovered on the PPCGeeks forum, makes this radical cost reduction possible. It turns out all you need is an iPod TV-out cable connected to the HTC Fuze multi-adaptor cable and a small registry edit to get TV out for cheap working.
The appropriate iPod cable can be gotten fro cheap nearly anywhere. DealExtreme is offering the cable at only $2.79 with free shipping. The registry hack it taken care of by this new control panel applet by no2Chem.

HTC Touch Pro vs HTC Touch Pro 2 comparison
One of our commenters said the real size comparison they wanted to see was the HTC Touch Pro vs the HTC Touch Pro 2, which seems a fair question, the one being the successor to the other.
Unfortunately I have neither device here, but quickly mocked up this graphic showing the relative sizes.
The HTC Touch Pro is 51 x 102 x 18.05 millimetres, while the Touch Pro 2 is 59.2 x 116 x 17.25 millimetres. That makes the Touch Pro 2 a much larger device, 8.2mm (1/3 inch) wider and 14 mm (0.55 inches) taller. In fact, the device is even slightly taller than the HTC Kaiser (59 x 112 x 19mm). Of course of the 3 devices the Touch Pro 2 is the thinner, at 17.25 mm, but one does have to wonder about the range of appeal of such large device, even for business users.
Of course the big 62.1 x 115.5 x 12.3 iPhone 3G does prove that if you make a device interesting enough the public is willing to overlook trivial things such as the size of the device.
Of note also is the curved design, with sloping sides, which does a lot to improve the hand-feel of the device and gives the impression that its a lot smaller than it really is.
Is the Touch Pro 2 too large? Let us know in the comments.
HTC Touch Pro service manual leaked
In 6 months time many HTC Touch Pro/ Fuze owners are going to start having loose keyboards, and some intrepid owners will be looking at tightening the rails up themselves.
For these adventurous types the HTC Raphael Service manual may be of great use, as it describes in great detail how to disassemble the Touch Pro safely (and believe me, it looks pretty tricky).
The manual is presently available to download from HTCwinmobile here. Get it quick, because who knows how long it will last.
New G-sensor software solves in call screen blanking problem
A new app has been developed on XDA-Developers.com which solves the annoying problem brought on by the lack of a proximity sensor on HTC’s now older devices like the Touch Diamond, Pro and HD.
With these devices, the screen switches off soon after a phone call is started, preventing you from pressing on-screen buttons with your ear, but also preventing you from navigating various dial tone menus one often encounter. The only way to access these keys is to manually switch the device back on again.
The application, called Touch In Call Tweak, uses the G-sensor in the above devices to detects, while a phone call is ongoing, when a device is vertical (and presumably therefore held up to your ear) and switches the screen off, but also detects when the device is held horizontally, as when entering keys, and switches back on again.
According to the thread participants the software works pretty well, and is reducing annoyance levels all over the world.
Download Touch In Call Screen Tweak from XDA-Developers here.
