Phones sent for warranty repairs now coming back with Mango

SmartphoneFrance reports one of their readers sent in their LG Optimus 7 for repair and received a pleasant surprise on return of the handset – it was now running Windows Phone 7 Mango.
Apparently the readers was pretty happy, saying:
"This is a pure joy! Everything is much faster and fluid , applications are better integrated and I discover each day of nice little details that make this phone not the same … it is much better, I am truly delighted! = D "
If that’s not an endorsement for Mango I dont know what is.
This is not the first such report we have received, and while we do not suggest anyone break their phone just to get the update, I feel it is another sign that we do not have to wait too long for an official update.

Leaked Orange FR memo confirms September 15th Mango target, 4 week roll-out and some disabled features
SmartphoneFrance managed to get access to an internal Orange France memo which makes for pretty interesting reading. It confirms that the September 15th date was real after all, suggesting there has been a bit of delay, likely due to Microsoft wanting to get all carriers ready at the same time before an impressive global roll out.
Secondly it says the roll-out will take 4 weeks, to prevent server overload. That is some-what ridiculous of course – Microsoft just served 3 Petabytes of Windows 8 downloads, so 5 million Windows Phone 7.5 downloads will probably not even cause Microsoft to break a sweat, but of course the staged roll-outs are safer, as problems can be detected before all customers are affected.
Lastly the memo claims some features, such as Internet sharing over WIFI, Visual Voice Mail and Group Messaging over MMS would be disabled until a future update. While many French readers are upset about this, I personally feel that I would rather get Mango out and then have these services added in the future, rather than wait for the carrier to make changes to its infrastructure to support these, which could take months.
See the memo after the break.
LG Optimus 7 going dirt cheap on Amazon.de

It seems if you want a cheap generation 1 Windows Phone 7 smartphone Germany is the place to go.
We wrote about the Dell Venue Pro being available in Germany for only 199 Euro a few days ago, and now we have the LG Optimus 7 available for only 174 Euro.
The phone is famous for being the only one with real hardware buttons, making for a much more predictable gaming experience, and of course comes with 16 GB storage and DLNA support out of the box, making the underrated handset a great deal.

Windows Phone 7 Enters Jordan With LG Optimus 7
Yesterday, Microsoft Jordan along with LG and Zain telecom launched their first Windows Phone device LG Optimus 7. The device boasts same specs as we all know with 16GB internal me
mory. Here are the quotes from Microsoft, LG and Jordan on this device launch.
Mr. Husni Khuffash, Microsoft Jordan Country Manager, stated, “Microsoft, Zain, and LG are delivering a different kind of mobile phone and experience that makes everyday tasks faster by getting more done in fewer steps and providing timely information in a ‘glance and go’ format. Windows Phone is all about deep, integrated experiences and a unique, elegant design. These integrated experiences come from all across Microsoft including Xbox LIVE, Microsoft Office Mobile, Zune, Windows Live, Bing and much more.”
“The introduction of this new operating system and handset in Jordan is in line with Zain’s goal to offer its customers the latest the world of telecommunications has to offer” said Zain CEO Mr. Ahmad Al Hanandeh. Such an offer, he added, embodies the company’s move to offer data services and content to users, as part of a larger trend adopted by the company, by which data services and mobile applications constitute its future products. “We realize the fast pace of people’s lives these days and have taken this into consideration by helping to reduce time and effort spent by people while on the go” he added.
LG Electronics Levant Managing Director, Mr. Kevin Cha, commented, "LG is thrilled to provide Zain with the matchless phone, OPTIMUS 7, featuring the newest Windows Phone 7 operating system, which will introduce users to a whole new level of advanced, ultra-modern mobile phone experience."
Zain has also announced some some package plans from Optimus 7. Hope the expansion of Windows Phone to new territories continues.
LG Optimus 7 survives being run over by a car, but will never be pretty again…
EJ wanted to share his tale of woe with us. For some (unexplained) reason his Telus LG Optimus 7 was run over by a car yesterday, but much like in a summer blockbuster it take much more than this to kill our hero.
EJ is hoping to repair the device, but we suspect a swap-out will likely not be refused.
Thanks EJ for the tip.
Price crash–LG Optimus 7 now only £185
Windows Phone 7 handsets have been hitting new price lows, but we have not seen a good a deal yet as the LG Optimus 7 from Expansys UK, who are offering the handset for only £184.99 completely unlocked and contract free.
While not the most highest profile Windows phone, it is one of the few with physical buttons which should make the gamers amongst us really happy.

Short movie fully shot on LG Optimus 7
A production company biriatouproduction.com have published two short movies shot completely on a LG Optimus 7. They note the 24 fps frame rate of the device gives it an interesting effect, making the phone the Super 8 of modern times.
The phone videos are a side project for a much bigger lifestyle movie the company is recording, but I am sure our LG Optimus 7 owners appreciate these small ones just as much.
The clip above is was filmed in Indonesia, while the one below (after the break) in the Basque Country.
Orange UK carrier billing now available
My Kind of Phone, one of Microsoft’s official Windows Phone 7 blogs in UK, is now reporting that carrier billing has been enabled for Orange UK.
If you have purchased your Windows Phone from Orange directly you can now choose whether to charge your Marketplace purchases directly to your Orange bill, or to a credit card.
Carrier billing is so far not a common smartphone feature, especially for Windows phone 7, but is set to expand dramatically when Microsoft joins resources with Nokia, who has extensive agreements with carriers in place already. The ease of use is apparently known to drive purchases at significantly higher rates than using a credit card.

Windows Phone 7 smartphones hitting all time low price points in Europe
We reported about a month ago on the massive price drops on Windows Phone 7 handsets in Europe.
The process appears to have continued, with some handsets available for as little as 170 Euro without any commitment.
If you want an HTC 7 Trophy, the handset I am enjoying at the moment, Amazon will be happy to sell it to you for only 175 Euro. According to price tracker Geizhals.at, the Trophy can be had for as little as 169.99 if you look around, and the LG Optimus 7 for as little as 184.79.
With prices so low now of course may be the perfect time to jump in and buy a Windows Phone 7 handset for very cheap, but of course the low prices does raise concerns about the sales and demand for these handsets.
Thanks Funky for the tip.
NoDo hitting Vodafone Germany

Mike Toron has dropped us a quick line to let our German readers know that the Vodafone Germany roll-out of Nodo has started, meaning the copy and pasting can commence there soon also. The carrier beats out its government-owned rival T-Mobile Germany, who’s NoDO update is still in testing.
Thanks Mike for the tip.
Post NoDo MFG Jailbreak still working on the LG Optimus 7
There are in fact a population of users who are reluctant to get the NoDo update for their Windows phone 7 handsets.
This people are the ones who make extensive use of the Homebrew apps now available out there. The NoDo update fixes the hack which enabled handsets to be developer unlocked without of course being developer handsets.
If those readers have am LG Optimus 7 they will be in luck then, as Yakkaimono on XDA- Developers have discovered the MFG hack on the LG Optimus 7 is still working perfectly fine, allowing XAPs to be deployed to the handset.
Instructions on how to MFG unlock your handset can be found here.
Thanks paspals for the tip.
Debranding tutorial for LG phones to hurry NoDo along needs no Dev Unlock
Earlier this morning we posted rather convoluted instructions on how to debrand HTC devices by removing the registry key discovered by Rafael Rivera which removes the need to wait for carriers to start pushing the NoDo update.
Now Bryan Campbell has sent us some instructions for LG owners to do the same for their phones, and thankfully it is much simpler, not even needing to have the phones developer unlocked.
The instructions are as follows:
1. Enable the MFG application by going to the dialer and dialing ##634# then pressing call.
2. Launch the MFG application and enter 277634#*# when prompted for a password.
3. Select the Engineer Menu item.
4. Select the Other Setting menu item.
5. Select the Edit registry menu item.
6. Set the input boxes on this menu as follows:
Select ROOT_PATH: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Input SUB_PATH: \System\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo\
Input KEY: MobileOperator
Data Type: STRING
7. Select Query and write down the result in case you need to re-brand for some reason.
8. To debrand just enter the same information above and leave the input data field blank. The tool will say fail but it really did set correctly.
You can now connect to Zune and check for updates.
Bryan notes the back allowed him to get the pre-NoDo update, and hopefully the NoDo update will be along shortly also.
Thanks Bryan for the tip.
Carriers to be slow on NoDo update–may roll out over course of weeks

Disappointing news from Telus is that they will be rolling out the NoDo update for their LG Optimus 7 on the 29th March at the earliest, and even then will be doing a phased roll out over the course of up to 4 weeks.
I expect that they will not be the only carrier doing this, suggesting that the SIM-free devices getting the update this week may be the guinea pigs for the process, and that the carriers are a bit gun shy after the Samsung fiasco.
While this is not the happy scenario for Windows Phone 7 updates we expected when it was described last year, impatient readers should bear in mind that this is a relatively minor update which, it seems, will get to all eventually in the end.
