Another look at DLNA on the Windows Phone 7 LG GW910

Engadget has also made their rounds in IFA and shot some more video of the LG Panther demonstrating its custom DLNA feature. The service does not just support pictures, but will also stream video, and while doing it will also have basic transport features such as fast forward and rewind.

Engadget claims the handset will be coming in October, which is of course the date we all expect for the European Windows Phone 7 launch.

DLNA shown of on the LG Panther

Mobileburn is wandering the halls at CTIA and stumbled across the LG Panther (which they think is the LG Optimus 7, but we think is unlikely) at a LG DLNA display.

They were able to have a live hands-on demo and recorded the above video of DLNA in action.

At present it is not believed that DLNA is part of the core spec of Windows Phone 7, which does show that there is still room for OEM’s to differentiate themselves with improved features and functionality even on Windows Phone 7.

Mobileburn has some more picture of the LG Panther at their website here.

LG Panther passes through FCC

LG Panther

In an rather odd move, the LG GW910 has passed through the FCC.  The developer handset has not been expected to see any wide release, but appears, according to the FCC, to be heading to AT&T after all. The handset, which has a 5 megapixel camera, appears rather staid and business-like, but still features a smiley key, and I must admit, I prefer its look over the recent crop of other devices announced.

LG’s first Windows Phone 7 device coming September, “a couple by the end of the year”

The LG PantherLG’s Panther was one of the first Windows Phone 7 devices shown off, so it is no surprise it will also be one of the first to hit the market.

According to company representatives, the phone is “ready to go”.

LG has told PCWorld they expect to release the handset as early as the end of September, meaning it could be a scant 60 days before the first Windows Phone 7 handset hits the market.

The LG Panther will not be LG’s only Windows Phone 7 handset this year however.

"We have a deep relationship with Microsoft so expect to have a couple by the end of this year," said Ken Hong, an LG representative in Seoul.

LG claims to have an iPhone-killer Windows Phone 7 device in the works, and there is evidence for at least 2 more LG devices, the LG C900 and LG E900 running Windows Phone 7.

Windows Phone 7 coming to Ukraine in October/November

ITCChannel have had a hands-on with a near-final build of Windows Phone 7 in Ukraine, and came away with a generally good impression.

He notes the OS (running on the LG Panther) ran quickly without noticeable delay and liked the user interface, which he called unlike any other, but still easy to to work with and easy to adapt to.

WP7 browser does landcape He called the browser acceptable in speed, and did not encounter any rendering errors, noted that Windows Phone could be set up to upload pictures automatically to Facebook and Windows Live (what Microsoft has called no-button sharing in the past), said Microsoft Office was very good and synchronized with Sharepoint and Windows Live, and that the Zune software was fully integrated.

He also mentioned devices running the OS will reach the Ukrainian market in October or November, but that the region will not be supported by Marketplace at least initially for paid application, but free applications should be available (a bit like the Android Marketplace) , and that Microsoft would likely not promote the OS heavily there.

He concludes:

In general, Windows Phone 7 left a good impression, running the operating system quickly enough and in the time I had to use it I could not detect any errors. I saw the almost finished product, so when in the near future smartphones based on this platform appears it will no doubt worth it.

Another LG Panther Windows Phone 7 walk-through – in Ukrainian

Here we have another look at the LG Panther running Windows Phone 7, more or less out in the wild and in use in Microsoft’s offices in the Ukraine.

Unfortunately the commentary is not English, but that does give one time to focus on the user interface, and in contrast to the hatchet job Infoworld’s Grubman did on Windows Phone 7, the video shows an elegant, response user interface with all important features easily and rapidly accessible.

Any of our readers understand Russian and able to tell us if there is any new info revealed?  Drop us a hint below.

Another LG Panther/ Windows Phone 7 video

Mobilyzed have uploaded a longer version of their Windows Phone 7 hands-on from earlier this week. The video.

To me the most interesting feature is the calendar view, which even in the month view shows quite a bit of detail, unlike the current Windows Mobile version, which was clearly designed for lower resolution screens.

LG Panther shown off again by Microsoft at Windows Phone 7 event

  LG Panther

Techielobang.com  has published a short write-up of a meet-up Microsoft has organized with mobile enthusiasts in Singapore.

No new information was released, but Microsoft did show off the LG Panther once again. Techielobang notes Microsoft was very reticent for pictures to be taken, but that this did not stop the odd blogger from grabbing a snap.

Is it my imagination or is that keyboard starting to look pretty good?

More pictures after the break.

LG Panther start-up video (that actually works)

Yesterday’s video by InnovationSingapore did not in fact work very well (likely due to a Slashdot by Engadget) but this version uploaded by vuhoangdung shows the start-up experience very well.

Of note is that the device boots fast, appears to be fully multi-lingual, and the device can actually start up without signing into Live ID, contrary to previously leaked information.

As before, see more at InnovationSingapore here.

CNET looks at the LG Panther

LG Panther

CNET has also recently had the opportunity for a hands-on with the Windows Phone 7 LG Panther.

They note the device looked a bit more work focussed, with a rather thick body, but their impression of the software was a bit more appealing.

When we took the phone for a spin, we were impressed by how polished the OS looked. Everything from music to maps proved smoothly responsive to our touch, and the operating system seemed to be living up to its promise.

Viewing and editing documents is a massive pain on the small screen, and we can’t recommend that you ditch your laptop for a mobile phone. But Office in WinPhev is focused on quickly jotting down notes — not analysing your yearly sales figures or writing your novel.

The OneNote app lets you take notes in the form of text, images or voice recordings. It can sync them wirelessly with your company’s SharePoint server, if it has one, or to the cloud via Windows Live SkyDrive, which sounds pretty cool.

LG Panther shown off, Zune for UK confirmed

Just in time to try and distract us from the poor Windows Mobile showing in Q1 2010, Microsoft has shown off the LG Panther to the PocketLint crew in UK.

They report the handset worked smoothly, and that many of the major features were up and running, and that the handset will be one of the launch devices.  We have heard separately that September is still being mooted as a possible date for the Windows Phone 7 coming out party. The handset was at the stage that the Microsoft exec was using it as his main device.  ElectricPig, who also had a hands-on, report the device felt “finished, with a sturdy sliding mechanism and decent landscape keyboard”.

Alex Reeve, the organisation’s UK Mobile Business Group director, also confirmed the Zune Music Store will be available in UK before the release of Windows Phone 7 handsets.

One nice feature they also revealed is that the Zune app will add meta data, including album art, to mp3s which lack them.

Mystery LG Windows Phone 7 device gets a name

lg-pantherWe usually know the code name of a new device well before we actually get to see it, but on this occasion, with LG’s new Windows Phone 7 series smartphone, we have a pretty nice device with no moniker.

Fortunately it seems this situation does not have to continue much longer, as Best Mobile Contracts appeared to have somehow convinced LG to part with a name.

LG’s first Windows Phone 7 smartphone is apparently code-named LG Panther.  No more information than this has been revealed so far, but at least the mystery is no longer.
