After Nokia Sea Ray more button-less Windows Phones coming?

eldarbuttons

We know, rather controversially, that the Nokia Sea Ray does not have physical buttons in front. Now the great Russian sage Eldar Murtazin has added his two cents to the debate by saying that the Windows Phone 7 hardware design guidelines does not in fact call for hardware buttons in front, and that we will see more such virtual button devices from OEMs like Samsung, LG and HTC.

There have been rumours of Android and even the iPhone moving to a fully button-less design already, and such a change would certainly make it just a bit cheaper for OEMs to design and manufacture handsets.  In terms of actual utility however I am sure most of our readers would feel it is a step backwards, likely increasing the number of accidental button, already a problem with capacitive buttons, exponentially.

How do our readers feel about fully button-less devices? Let us know below.

Microsoft to launch Korean Marketplace in August in run up to Mango release

A Korean Microsoft official has told Hankyung.com that Microsoft intends to open a Korean-language Marketplace in August 2011.

At present no Windows Phone 7 handsets are sold in Korea as the OS does not support most far-eastern scripts.  This is set to change with the release of Mango towards the end of this year, when the OS will support 16 additional languages.

Hopefully the opening of the store in August gives us some indication for the time frame of the release of the updated OS and new Windows Phone 7 handsets, which are widely expected to follow on the October anniversary of the first wave of WP7 handsets released last year.

It is somewhat ironic that no Windows Phone 7 handsets are sold in Korea, given that all Microsoft’s strongest OEM partners are from the far east, including of course HTC, LG and Samsung.

Windows Phone 7 LG E700 will come with Mango

LG-E700-Windows-Phone-7-Mango

Some XML on LG’s website indicate a new Windows phone 7 handset is on the way from LG. About the only other thing we know about the handset is that it will also feature Internet Explorer 9, a feature which after MIX 11 we now firmly associate with Mango.

A range of new handsets are expected in the October/November time frame from HTC, Samsung, Dell, Asus and Acer, on the anniversary of the release of the first wave of Windows Phone 7 handsets.

New Mango handsets are expected to feature updated processors with much faster GPUs such as the Qualcomm’s MSM7x30 and Adreno 205 GPU combination and also optional gyroscopes.

LG planning to bring on more Windows Phones, superphones this year

The Optimus 7 successor may have a 4 inch screen

LG’s smartphones are nice, and provide great value, but, at least on the Windows Phone 7 side, can not exactly be called super phones.

LG is nothing if not ambitious however and plans to double its US smartphone market share with more marketing and an emphasis on super phones, which LG defines as smartphones with screens at least 4 inches, a processor of at least 1GHz, and lots of embedded memory. At present all LG’s Windows Phone 7 phones have smaller screens, the LG Optimus 7 with 3.8 inches and the LG Quantum with 3.6 inches.

Tim O’Brien, LG’s U.S. marketing VP told TWICE during the CTIA convention that as part of the smartphone drive, the company looks forward to offering more “superphones” in 2011 as well as more Android and Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

For LG, superphones will also deliver such enhanced features as bright displays usable in direct sunlight, 3D displays, and the like.

LG will also will focus its consumer advertising program exclusively on “superphones,” rather than their feature phones. Superphone ads will go live to support carriers’ launches.

LG did not say explicitly if one of their new 2011 Windows Phones will be superphones, but if they want to improve their rather disappointing Windows phone 7 standing we suggest they get right on with it.

WP7 OEMs–Motorola out, Sony Ericsson, Asus and Acer maybe, LG on board, HTC and Samsung all in

With Nokia joining the Windows Phone 7 party, there is a lot of questions of how this gigantic fish will affect the others in the small Windows phone 7 pond.

The answer is that it seems to vary very much depending on how much success an OEM has had with Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile in the past.

Motorola’s VP of Software and Services Product Management, Christy Wyatt, was pretty clear, saying "I don’t envision us using Microsoft. I would never say never but it’s not something we’re entertaining now."

Sony Ericsson was open, but still pretty married to Android.

“We believe that the Android environment is the best and most mature ecosystem for us at the moment; but we have an open OS strategy, which includes OSE, Symbian and Android, and a good working relationship with Microsoft,” said Vautier in an interview with TechRadar.

Less sure, but still not committed would be Asus and Acer.

Asus said they produced the first prototype Windows Phone 7 handsets, but was unsure about demand for the handsets.

“The operator voice will be the key factor to think of in our Windows Phone 7 strategy,” says Benson Lin, Asus’ corporate vice president and the general manager of its mobile devices unit.

“For the moment, we are all Android but we feel ready for Windows Phone,” says Lin. “After all, we have experience with it already.”

Less positive was Acer’s Product Marketing Manger, Smart Handheld Business Group Dac Nguyen, who according to WPCentral had an internal WP7 prototype, but was concentrating on Android at present.

LG was of course already have devices on the market, but have complained of them underperforming, and did not even show their older WP7 handsets at MWC.

Samsung and HTC, who have been doing well in the Windows Phone 7 market, are much more positive.

Samsung Chief Strategy Officer’s Omar Khan said, "You can continue to expect expansion in our Windows Phone portfolio”, adding that the current collection was selling well.

HTC president of HTC for North America and Latin America Jason Mackenzie said"Obviously Windows Phone 7 is a platform we’ve invested tremendously on" and "we’ll continue to support that."

All of the OEMs already invested in Windows Phone 7 promised a new bath of handsets later in the year, and it is likely that, because all of the current batch of devices were released at the same time, and the OEMs expect at least a year from each handset, they will be waiting till holidays 2011 to release new hardware.

LG sends mixed messages at MWC ’11

While LG CEO Dr. Jong-Seok Park has reaffirmed his company’s commitment to Microsoft regardless of the new Nokia partnership, LG’s support at Mobile World Congress 2011 has been mixed, to say the least. There was little emphasis on WP7 in his speech, and their efforts with the OES seem to have been downplayed; most worryingly, according to WPCentral reporter Daniel Rubino, LG appear not to be displaying any Windows Phone 7 devices, in a display that had ample room even for feature phones.

LG have been scaling their Windows Phone commitment back and back from their initially strong support at the OS’s announcement. While their guarantee to continue with WP7 is comforting for the moment, if LG doesn’t make a better showing soon it may be joining the long line of OEMs whose plans with Microsoft have, one way or another, not panned out.

LG: “Operators say there is too much Android”

lg-chocolate-bl-3

If this handset ran Windows Phone 7 LG would not wonder why their sales are low.

LG has spoken to Pocket-Lint about the performance of their Windows Phone 7 handsets.

“From an industry perspective we had a high expectation, but from a consumer point of view the visibility is less than we expected,” said James Choi, marketing strategy and planning team director of LG Electronics global.

LG is looking into explanations for this under-performance, but did not blame the OS itself.

“LG has been closely collaborating with Microsoft from the beginning. What we feel is that it is absolutely perfect for a huge segment out there. What we feel is that some people believe that some operating systems, mainly Google, are extremely complicated for them. But Windows Phone 7 is very intuitive and easy to use.”

“For tech guys like us it might be a little bit boring after a week or two, but are there are certain segments that it really appeals to. We strongly feel that it has a strong potential even though the first push wasn’t what everyone expected.”

Samsung overtakes HTC in Windows Phone 7 sales alsoDespite the feature set of most Windows Phone 7 handsets being near identical, LG has consistently in our and other surveys been pegged last amongst the big 3 Windows Phone 7 OEMs – Samsung, HTC and LG.

Of course most watchers would be able to offer LG a pretty simple explanation – their handsets lack attractive industrial design, something which we are often surprised a company as large as LG can not seem to understand.

LG was however not giving up on Windows Phone 7, noting there was carrier demand for the OS.

“From a vendor perspective, having that balance is critical, being dependent on one OS is not beneficial for us. That’s the same with not just the manufacturers, but the operators as well,”

“There is a need and demand from the operators saying there is too much ‘Android’ in the portfolio. In that sense LG always tries to balance our portfolio, and that’s not just in sense of hardware but OS’s as well.”

LG pegged its hope on future Windows Phone 7 success in cheaper handsets in the future.

“There is a lot of skepticism at the moment, but once Windows Phone 7 handsets that are mid-tier to low tier start appearing the market share will grow. Right now it’s only exclusively present in a high tier, because of its hardware requirements, and that’s limiting growth.”

We would advice LG that this is exactly the wrong route to follow.  Consumers are more than ready to pay handsomely for devices that exude quality and performance, and LG’s thick, plasticy devices have just not been inspiring.   Our advice – buy a design company, and make the next LG Chocolate BL40 run Windows Phone 7.

LG looking at adding home automation to their smartphones

Press Release: For the first time anywhere, LG Electronics (LG) will today unveil its full range of smart appliances, enabled by LG THINQ™ Technology, at the 2011 International CES®. Comprising five key features – Smart Grid, Smart Diagnosis™, Smart Access, Smart Adapt and Food Management – LG THINQ™ Technology offers a complete smart solution that lets consumers manage their homes in a more centralized and convenient way.

LG-UNVEILS-TOTAL-HOME-APPLIANCE-SOLUTION-EMPOWERING-CONSUMERS-TO-SMARTLY-MANAGE-THEIR-HOMES

“For LG, ‘smart’ means offering the ultimate benefits of empowerment and convenience to our consumers. With our innovative THINQ™ Technology, consumers will be more empowered when doing household tasks thanks to more efficient, controllable, and ecofriendly appliance options,” said Young-ha Lee, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “This isn’t a gradual evolution – LG THINQ™ Technology essentially transforms how consumers take care of their home, and makes it easier and smarter than ever before.”

Less Energy, Lower Electricity Bills, Eco-Friendlier Life
A centrepiece of LG THINQ™ Technology, the Smart Grid, deploys a smart meter to ensure that appliances use the minimum amount of energy at the least expensive rates as possible. When switched on, the Smart Grid gives consumers the choice of using “Recommend Time,” which does the washing at the nearest, most cost-effective time or immediately if there are no off-peak electricity options available anytime soon. Alternatively, users can opt for “Lowest Rate,” which finds the time when electricity rates are at their lowest. Consumers can also select the washing time themselves, and if they have to do the washing at a peak time, the washing machine will recommend the most energy-efficient cycle.

Using the Smart Grid, LG’s ovens offer three cost options – low, middle and high – that take into account both the duration of the cooking cycle and varying costs of electricity. Similarly, LG’s refrigerators can use a unique algorithm to adjust various functions, such as defrost time control – to offer further savings on energy bills at peak times. What’s more, LG refrigerators even count and display the frequency at which homeowners open the refrigerator door, giving them the information they need to save even more energy.

The LCD display on LG’s smart appliances shows daily, weekly or monthly reports detailing the appliance’s overall levels of energy consumption and associated costs. Daily totals for electricity usage and subsequent charges will be accessible on smartphones and tablet PCs. With these new functions, consumers can save on time and energy bills while also opting for a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

LG Smart Diagnosis™ Makes Things Simple and Provides Optimum Performance
LG’s high-tech appliances are highly reliable, yet service issues arise from time to time. Previously, the only course of action was to contact customer service and await the arrival of a service technician to access and repair the unit. Now, LG’s Smart Diagnosis™ feature helps customer service representatives quickly and efficiently troubleshoot mechanical issues over the phone, limiting costly, inconvenient service calls and in-home visits.

For minor problems – refrigerator door left open, ice-maker switched off, washing machine off-balance – the appliance alerts the owner either on its display panel or for future models, via a Wi-Fi connection, on the consumer’s smartphone or tablet PC.

When consumers call the LG customer service center, a technician will instruct them to press a sequence of buttons on the laundry unit. This triggers a series of tones that let the technician identify the issue and how to correct the problem. Consumers can also diagnose their washing machines at home via a downloadable mobile application on their smartphone.

LG Smart Diagnosis™ eliminates a step in the troubleshooting process, because issues can at times be identified without the need for a service technician to visit the home for diagnosis, saving time and money. In those instances where a service visit is required, the field technician can come prepared with the correct parts, enabling the repair to be resolved in one visit. The combination of this new feature and LG’s product warranties – including the unprecedented 10-year warranty on the Direct Drive motor – illustrates that the company’s customer service is as reliable as it home appliances.

LG Smart Access Monitors, Controls and Secures Your Home Appliances
LG Smart Access makes it possible for homeowners to monitor and control home appliances remotely from outside of the home. Using a smartphone or tablet PC, users can manage their washing cycle from the office, or set their refrigerator temperature while they’re at the gym. Alert messages will be sent to the user’s smartphone or tablet PC for items such as the end of a washing cycle or a potential product issue.

More impressively, consumers will soon be able to order their HOM-BOT robotic vacuum cleaner to tidy up their home while they’re out, or use the vacuum’s viewing function to keep watch when they are away from home. Via a smartphone or tablet PC, consumers even have the option to have HOM-BOT feed their pet while they’re away. LG plans to offer even more convenient options through Smart Access in the near future.

Smart Adapt for Upgrading and Adapting to Personal Preference
LG Smart Adapt allows consumers to download the latest services and technology upgrades for their appliances via a Wi-Fi connection. With this innovation, consumers will be able to access up-to-date pre-programmed recipes as well as advanced cycles for their washing machines. A mother with a newborn child might opt for special delicate washing cycles for the baby’s clothes, while individuals involved in particularly strenuous work might need to add a more heavy-duty wash cycle to their laundry unit. With Smart Adapt, consumers will be able to experience the very latest LG technologies without having to upgrade to new products.

LG Food Management Monitors Your Refrigerator and Puts You in Control
LG’s Food Management Solution helps consumers manage the contents of their refrigerator more effectively. By dragging and dropping food icons on the refrigerator’s LCD display or by using the voice recognition function, users can easily identify what is in the refrigerator, as well as where certain items are located and when they expire. This information is also accessible via smartphones or tablet PCs, allowing consumers to reference this while grocery shopping.

With all these innovative functions and smart options, LG THINQ™ Technology is helping consumers live more empowered lives and enjoy a new level of convenience and interactivity.
