Motorola Alexander cancelled
It should come as no surprise really, given Moto’s recent distancing themselves from Windows Mobile, but Digitimes today claims the Motorola Alexander, an 8 Megapixel Windows Mobile Standard Smartphone with NVidia graphics has been cancelled. The vertical slider would have been paired with the Motorola Atilla or the A3100. That device has in fact now been released, but only to tertiary markets and will not see wide distribution.
It remains to be seen if Motorola can achieve better success with its Android strategy for 2009, but we expect to see them back in full force with the release of Windows Mobile 7 in 2010.

Motorola A3100 UI looks fantastic
As many of you may know, I have a soft place in my heart for the Motorola A3100, and this video of the UI in action just reinforces my view that this device is a bit of all right.
What particularly impresses me is the ease of re-arranging the icons, and also the smooth and engaging animation of the tabs. I am sure i would love to play with one of these when it comes out.

Czech site IDNEZ.cz has published some more details of Motorola’s A3000, better known to us as the Atilla. The device has apparently been approved by China’s telecommunications authority.
The device, which appears to be rather low-end, with a 3.5 inch QVGA touch screen, is 110 x 60 x 13.7 millimeters. The weight of the device is 120 grams. It features Quadband GSM and EDGE, but there is no evidence of 3G (not uncommon for China, who is only now rolling out a 3G network) or even WIFI. The device even lacks GPS. The processor is however no slouch, being a Qualcomm MSM7206A processor running at 528 MHz, and the camera is a industry-standard 3 megapixel. Expansion if via microSDHC.
IDNEZ speculated that the device may launch with Windows Mobile 6.5.
The launch of this device in China is interesting, as Motorola has seen a lot of success in China with its Linux-powered Ming handset which shares a similar form-factor, and most had assumed the Windows Mobile powered device was targeted only at the western market.

New Motorola Atilla and Alexander pictures

Some new pictures of Motorola’s new Windows Mobile smartphones have emerged from Chinese cellphone forum it168.com. The Motorola Alexander (left and right) is Windows Mobile Standard with a sliding keyboard, while the Motorola Atilla (center) is Windows Mobile Professional with obviously a touch screen.
The pictures mainly go to confirm the devices are pretty near release, and if it is Q1 2009 as rumoured earlier today, its likely to be January rather than March.

According to EMSNow, Compal Communications has won the order to produce Motorola’s two new flagship Windows Mobile devices. The long rumoured Motorola Alexander, with its sliding QWERTY keyboard and Attilla, with its touch screen, will both feature HSDPA and WIFI, and are set to be delivered in Q1 2009, rather than the earlier planned Q4 2008.

Is this the Motorola Atilla?
The following pictures have shown up on a Chinese phone forums, claiming to be the Motorola Atilla.
While the device does bear a striking resemblance (and the Motorola logo) to Motorola’s leaked device, this, being China, does not guarantee anything really. The iPhone theme does not help either.
The handset however does appear quite attractive, and if real, the specs are not too bad either, except for the tiny QVGA screen.
See the origin of the pictures here.
