Netflix for Android delayed due to fragmentation–score one Windows Phone 7
Netflix has announced that, after delivering Netflix for Windows phone 7, a player for their streaming video service for Android has been delayed to 2011, and that even then it will only come to certain handsets.
Complaining about a lack of “generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism” which led to “piracy concerns”, they notes their solution was ultimately to work with each OEM and handset vendor individually to bring support, something which is clearly sub-optimal.
Microsoft has intentionally taken an approach with Windows phone 7 to avoid fragmentation, not due to Android but due to experience with Windows Mobile. They have also intentionally worked to create a platform friendly to content providers, much like the iPhone, and while this may irk power users at times, it does mean content providers feel more secure, and with easy development allows Windows Phone 7 to punch above his weight at present.

Windows Phone 7 to feature Netflix streaming video service
One of the surprise 3rd party apps shown off at MIX10 was by Netflix, which unlike on other platforms, support the full experience, including Watch Instantly, which allows the streaming of full movies over 3G.
The availability of this app goes far in addressing scarcity of media on the platform, and will allow Microsoft to leverage a service that’s already in pretty wide use, which can only be good for the popularity of Microsoft’s new mobile OS.

Microsoft’s Netflix app created by Spb Software
It should come as no surprise really, but it turns our Microsoft has hired Spb Software to create their ground-breaking Netflix queue management application. The Mobile Manager for Netflix is an on-device application that seamlessly interfaces with the Netflix web service, allows searching the entire Netflix library, viewing the movie details, managing the DVD queue, and adding movies to Instant Queue directly from Windows phones and play trailers of movies, directly on the handset screen.
Steve Hegenderfer, group product manager at Microsoft, Corp, said “We are very excited to work with Spb Software to bring the popular Netflix service to our customers, giving them easy access to their account and favorite movies while on the go.”
The Mobile Manager for Netflix was developed in cooperation between Microsoft, Netflix, and Spb Software. The application interface is built on the Spb Mobile Shell UI engine (also used in such popular applications as Spb Wallet, Spb Online, Spb Weather, Spb Traveler), and allows optimizing the efficiency of the user interface and speed of service navigation. With this fast and finger-friendly UI, the Mobile Manager application streamlines the Netflix mobile user experience, allowing subscribers to preview movie trailers on the go, add selected items to the DVD queue, or the Instant Queue – to instantly watch movies on TV screens using Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
Mobile Manager for Netflix can be downloaded from Microsoft here.
Netflix Mobile Manager now available for download
The app was so nice Steve Ballmer had to show it off at CES, and if you have a Windows Mobile phone and Netflix you are probably anticipating it too.
Mobile Manager for Netflix is a Windows Mobile app, made by Microsoft, that interfaces with the Netflix API and also features custom extentions not available to other 3rd party developers that allow Windows Mobile users to interface with the Netflix queue, to add or remove movies, not just from their normal queue, but also their Watch Instantly queue. It also features the ability to watch movie trailers right on the device itself.
With Netflix increasingly popular (with more than 10 million users of their streaming service) this app may prove quite a hit.
Download the application from Microsoft here.
