On eve of NL 520 launch Nokia Lumia 510 hits new low price point

The Nokia Lumia 510 Windows phone 7.8 handset is hitting a new low price point, with the handset available from as low as 9300 INR.

While Nokia still lists the smartphone as 10,300 INR on their website, sites like GoProbo shows much lower prices are available.

The price drop suggests Nokia is phasing out the Lumia 510 in favour of the 520, which is good news for consumers as it keeps the confusing period when both WP7.8 and WP8 handsets are being sold as short as possible. The NL 520 is expected to hit stores in less than 2 weeks.

If you are however happy to get a deal on a phone running an older operating system now would be the time, as I am sure these will be going fast.

Nokia Lumia 510 now available on Tesco Mobile for only £85

The selection of cheap Windows Phones available in UK has just increased by one, with the Nokia Lumia 510 hitting Tesco Mobile for the cheap, cheap price of only £85 ($126) contract- free.

The handset is also available for free on a £10 per month two year contract which offers 100 minutes, 5000 texts, 500MB data.

The handset comes pre-loaded with Windows Phone 7.8, has a 5 megapixel camera, 256 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage.

Do our readers think Windows Phone plays well in this extreme low-end, or is the Nokia Lumia 620 about as low as Nokia and Windows Phone should go? Let us know below.

Nokia says retailer demand forced it to bring the Nokia Lumia 510 to the UK

We reported earlier that the Nokia Lumia 510 was coming to UK retailer Phones4U.

Now Nokia has told TechRadar that they would have preferred to concentrate on their Windows Phone 8 range, but retailer demand forced them to bring the handset to UK.

"We had a lot of enquiries from customers for the Lumia 510, there’s quite a bit of demand; we’re expecting it to be ranged at one of the retailers, but it’s obviously a Windows Phone 7.8 device so it’s going to be a short term device. We’re fulfilling a demand," a spokesman said.

The 800 Mhz Windows Phone 7.8 device with a 4 inch screen will likely hit a much lower price point than the Nokia Lumia 620, and serve the same customers as the Nokia Lumia 610, which has been a popular low-end phone in UK, usually retailing for £99 on PAYGo.

It is not yet known if any carrier will be offering the handset and the exact price point, or exactly how long a “short term device” normally lasts on the market.

Do our readers think this is the right move for Nokia? Let us know below.

Cheap and cheerful Nokia Lumia 510 coming to UK, NL 505 coming to Colombia, Chile and Peru

Nokia is spreading the low-end love around the world this quarter, with their Windows Phone 7.8 Nokia Lumia 510 set to come to UK soon.

Already available in France on PhoneHouse , NokiaPowerUser.com reports the handset has been announced as coming soon to Phones4u. The slow-end smartphone has already been released in India and China.

PhoneHouse is currently selling the handset for EUR 189,99 (£160, $253) but I am sure there is more space for discounting the phone event further.

Meanwhile the earlier Telcel exclusive, the Nokia Lumia 505, is spreading its wings and heading to Latin countries.

WindowsPhoneApp.es reports the handset is heading for Colombia, Chile and Peru where it will be made available by the carrier Claro.

The Lumia 505 has similar specs to the 510, but with a larger screen and higher resolution 8 megapixel camera, and also runs Windows Phone 7.8.

In the words of Manuel Gonzalez, Director of Communications at Nokia for Latin America:

At Nokia we have a strong commitment to bring Windows Phone to new handsets at affordable prices and in different devices for everyone. With the Nokia Lumia 505, we intend to continue to welcome more people to experience the incredible experience that Windows Phone offers its users.

Windows Phone has seen good uptake with low-end handsets such as the Nokia 610, and by hitting even lower price points all around the world may be able to take some market share away from low-end Android handsets which mostly drive the success of that ecosystem.

Nokia Lumia 510 received second Windows Phone 7.8 ROM update

If there is any doubt Windows Phone 7.8 is still a work in progress the news of Nokia is pushing out a second ROM update for the Nokia Lumia 510, which ships with the OS, should erase it.

New firmware for the handset has just appeared on Navifirm which takes the OS from firmware version 12460 to 12490.

There is no word on what’s new with this build, but presumably at the very least it brings performance and stability tweaks.

Have any of our readers flashed the new ROM? Let us know what’s new below.

Nokia Lumia 510 now available in Russia from MTS

WP7Forum.ru reports that the Nokia Lumia 510, Nokia’s new low-end Windows Phone 7.5 phone, has now become available in Russia.

Available from the online store of MTS, the handset is retailing for 8490 rubles (around $275), which is significantly more expensive than the Rs 9999 or 5800 rubles ($188) Nokia was charging in India where the device first appeared, but it may just be that Nokia is charging what the local market can bear.

The device is available in White and Black and features:

  • Windows Phone 7.5
  • Processor – 800 MHz
  • WVGA, 800 x 480, 4 `TFT capacitive touchscreen display
  • RAM – 256 MB
  • ROM – 4 GB
  • 5-megapixel rear camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • FM-radio
  • Battery – 1300 mAh
  • Weight – 129 grams

The device is part of Nokia pursuing what has been a very successful low-end strategy which will hopefully see Windows Phones hitting the same low-end market as Nokia previously very successfully addressed with their Symbian handsets.

See some more pictures after the break.

Nokia Lumia 510 to ship with Windows Phone 7.8 pre-installed

According to BGR India the Nokia Lumia 510 will be the first phone to ship with Windows Phone 7.8 from the start. BGR notes it comes with Bluetooth File Sharing and a Ring tone maker pre-installed.

The WVGA device with 256 MB RAM and 4 GB storage features a 5 megapixel camera and an 800 Mhz Cortex A5 processor.

Unfortunately Windows Pone 7.8 as an update will only arrive in early 2013, meaning the rest of us will have to wait, but soon for an increasing number of people this will be their only Windows Phone experience.

Windows Phone 7.8 shows up on Navifirm for NL 800 and NL 510

Windows Phone 7.8 can not be too far off, with a version of the OS showing up on Navifirm for the Nokia Lumia 510 and Nokia Lumia 800.

This means if you are so inclined and do not mind losing all your data you could flash the OS to your phone right now.

Windows Phone 7.8 will eventually bring an updated start screen, Bing wallpapers, a child-lock feature and for Nokia handsets Bluetooth file transfer and a ring tone maker, amongst other features to older Windows Phone handsets.

Windows Phone 7.8 demoed on the Nokia Lumia 510

The above video shows a brief demo of Windows Phone 7.8 on the Nokia Lumia 510, released in China recently.

The update of course brings the new start screen, but also new accent colours, Bing lock screen wallpaper, and on Nokia handsets SMS drafts and the ability to keep WIFI active when the device is suspended.

There are also rumours of the ability to send files via Bluetooth File Transfer, unfortunately not demonstrated.

The update is currently rumoured for release in the next few weeks.

Nokia Lumia 510 unboxed

WPBox have unboxed the Nokia Lumia 510, Nokia’s new low-end Windows Phone 7.5 handset.

The device is designed to hit a new low-price point and engage Nokia’s traditional Symbian buyers.

The handset features a 4-inch WVGA 800×480 screen, 1300 mAh battery, 5MP camera, 256MB RAM, and 4GB storage of which 2.18 GB is free.

While we would likely judge the handset as extremely underspecced, other handsets in the same price range tend to have HVGA screens and 3,2 megapixel cameras, so the device certainly offers value for money.

WPBox expects the handset to receive the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade eventually.

Indian online retailer Flipkart has listed Nokia Lumia 510 with a price of Rs.9999. I think this below $200 price tag will be more competitive with many mid-range Android device which are dominating the Indian market right now. If Nokia releases this device within few weeks in India, it may have a winner on its smartphone lineup.

Nokia Lumia 510 features the following,

  •  FM Radio
  •  Windows Phone 7.5 OS
  •  800 MHz Processor
  •  4-inch TFT Capacitive Touchscreen
  •  5 MP Primary Camera
  •  Wi-Fi Enabled

A quick hands-on look at the Nokia Lumia 510

MobileGeeks posted this quick hands-on video of the Nokia Lumia 510, which it appears they had just received from Nokia.

Predictably the device is rather thick and chunky, and the screen does not have the best viewing angles, but for the price one can not expect too much.

The specs are reported as a 4 inch WVGA screen, 800 Mhz processor, 256 MB RAM, 4 GB storage, 5 megapixel camera and a 1,300 mAh battery.

He was able to confirm the Windows Phone 7.5 device will get the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade however, which adds additional value, especially in this price segment.

The handset will be available in  black, white, yellow, pink and blue for around $200 in India, spreading to the rest of the Asia Pacific soon after.
