Palm says goodbye to Treo Pro, does not want to drag it down with the company

PalmInfocenter has noticed Palm’s last Windows Mobile device, the Palm Treo Pro, recently made a rapid disappearance from Palm’s website and from their online store.

The only mention of the device is on a still-active product page for the CDMA Treo Pro in Alltel and Sprint.  The handset can also still be bought unlocked in its GSM version from Dell for $179.99 as well as from Amazon.

Palm, who has turned to Windows Mobile in an attempt to save the company in 2005, has recently seen its share price drop a third from a one year high of $18.09 to a low of 11.98 today (and as low as $10 on New Years Eve) after it abandoned its Windows Mobile-based business market in a quixotic attempt to unseat the iPhone consumer king and losing money for 9 straight quarters. With increasing loss of interest in USA and overseas sales below expectation, it is expected by many not to survive the current smartphone wars.

Palm drops corporate market while failing to win over consumers

Despite much media hype the Palm Pre has failed to turn around Palm, who has continued to lose money.  Announcing its quarterly results yesterday, the company announced a $164.5 million loss, a 300% increase compared to the $41.9 million loss for the quarter previously.

The loss was on the back of the sale of 823,000 smartphones, mostly Palm Pre’s, which continue to lose the company money.  The smartphone has failed to maintain its initial $199 price point, dropping to $149 a mere 2 months after its launch, with rumours of a $99 price point already circulating. Sales of the JavaScript based device has also failed to improve Palm’s sales over its already dismal performance last year, with sales 25% less than the 1029000 sold in the corresponding quarter last year.

Despite the poor performance of the much hyped handset Palm has announced its intention to discontinue its higher margin Windows Mobile-based cooperate line, saying it will concentrate on developing its WebOS devices.

With Palm under pressure from many sides in the consumer market, with Motorola set to launch its own social network based device on Sprint soon, Palm’s reliance on the cheap consumer market may again be its undoing.

Sprint Treo Pro finally get custom ROMs, Windows Mobile 6.5

treowm65

The likelihood of the Palm Treo Pro getting an official Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade is pretty close to a snowball’s chance in hell. The likelihood of an unofficial upgrade XDA-Dev style has until recently also been the same, as Palm has locked up the boot loader of the device pretty tight.

That tyranny has finally come to an end, with PPCGeeks cmonex and CFay finally getting the latest Windows Mobile 6.5.1 ROMs up and running on the 320×320 screen.

The software is currently only available for the CDMA Treo Pro, hopefully a GSM version wont be far behind.

Palm Treo Pro to launch on Alltel very soon

alltel-palm-treo-pro We have not been following the recent varied twists and turns of the Palm Treo Pro in America recently, but suffice to say, if you had been in USA and holding your breath waiting for one you would now be long stone cold in your grave.

However, for the Palm faithful, it seems a CDMA option has finally arrived. According to the BGR, the Palm Treo Pro will be arriving very shortly on Alltel, and the price will not be too bad either.  Set to launch on the 5 March, the device will be a very palatable $199 after $125 rebate on a two year contract.

On Sprint however, the smartphone seems to be galloping into an unknown vapourware sunset.

Date for Sprint Treo Pro, HTC Cedar romoured

The BoyGenius Report is reporting that their moles have unearthed the launch dates of two Windows Mobile devices on Sprint.

First, the oft-delayed Sprint Palm Treo Pro is now intended for a March 15th release. Apparently certification issues were responsible for the delay.

Next, the HTC Cedar, a Windows Mobile Standard smartphone leaked in January is apparently suggested for a June release.

Sprint Treo Pro imminent

The Sprint version of the Palm Treo Pro has been much leaked, and the latest news is that models are now in stores, which can only the release will be pretty soon.

WMexperts seems to have the device pretty much covered.  The have published some Sprint Internal slides showing the device, including this interesting one comparing it to other Sprint smartphones.

Of note is that the Sprint version is set to run at a smooth 528 Mhz  and will boast a much later 512 MB Flash Storage (we will ignore the obvious 32 Mb RAM error). WMExperts speculate the device will ship from the get go with IE6 on 6, with Flash intergrated in the browser.

Treocentral published this hands-on account from a reader who found one in his local store:

  • very nice feel in the hand, well made
  • Flush screen is nice
  • Touch sensitive butons worked well
  • Keyboard smaller than my 800w but wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be
  • Audio quality was great, earpiece and speaker
  • Pro has a manual PRL update icon in settings menu
  • Has a youtube icon that goes to Kinoma Freeplay when pressed
  • Memmory was 369 storage and program (I think, will verify)

He noted that his Treo 800w feels like a Ford truck and the Pro fel like a BMW. Sound like he was pretty darn impressed with the Tro Pro.

Sprint Treo Pro gets FCC Approval

One of the worst kept secrets in the world, the Sprint Treo Pro, still not officially announced by Palm, has just received FCC approval.

The device appears virtually identical to the GSM version, except of course for the presence of EVDO in the place of HSDPA.

Sprint Palm Treo Pro confirmed, dated (again, again)

As if the rumors and previous stories haven’t been enough, we just received more confirmation that the Palm Treo Pro will be heading to Sprint in January.

According to BGR, not only will the Treo Pro be sold through the usual retail channels but Best Buy will  be picking it up as well on January 25th. The WM6.1 device with Wifi and GPS now will sport EVDO for Sprint’s 3G Network along with much improved looks over the 800w.

For you Palm fans who were livid that Palm released the Treo Preo just a few months after the 800w launched on Sprint, it looks like your ship has almost arrived.

Palm Treo Pro for Sprint date rumoured

We are already pretty sure that the Palm Treo Pro will be showing up on Sprint, and now the BGR has announced a presumed date for its arrival.

They have been tipped that the sleek smartphone will be arriving around the 11th January 2009, which is less than 2 months away. How Palm Treo 800w users feel, who bought their smartphone less than 4 months ago, and will see their smartphone superseded in less than 6 months by a slimmer, more attractive device with better battery life remains in question, but I guess “not good” would encapsulate the majority.

In related news, Palm’s stock price has for the first time dropped below $2. Having no-one buy their Treo 800w this Christmas on the strength of this rumour will not be helping it recover any time soon.
