Palm appoints 118-118 man to attempt end run on European market
Palm, who’s share-price recently hit an all-time low of $2.70, valuing the company at a mere $300 million, is apparently set to spend millions trying to re-establish themselves in the European market, promoting their flagship product the Palm Treo Pro.
To help them achieve this aim they have appointed former Nokia Marketing Manager Simon Lloyd, who last worked at the 118-118 directory inquiries company. The ambition of Simon Lloyd is to create various local agencies to manage the listing and supply stores, online or physical, that sell Palm products throughout Europe.
At the same time, he now admits that the presence of Palm marketing in Europe has been “dormant” for some time, before announcing that the situation will soon change, thanks to the arrival of Paul Ghent to the post of sales director of Palm. He previously held the position of executive director of the Taiwanese manufacturer HTC smartphones.
“We are currently assessing our operations and we do not have a formal network of agencies in Europe. I want to create a campaign across Europe to promote our products, starting with the Treo smartphone Pro, “says Simon Lloyd before adding that” Blackberry and Nokia have moved ahead. It is time to redress the balance. ”
Personally change at Palm marketing can not come too soon. The company still owes WMPoweruser a Palm Treo Pro as promised months ago, and if the device performs as poorly as the company it can really not be recommended.

Palm Treo Pro vs Samsung Epix – Palm loses
PocketNow has been giving the Samsung Epix and Palm Treo Pro some hands-on side by side time, and have come away with their verdict.
Brandon notes the Epix has a better keyboard, better screen, a faster processor with higher performance and also better battery life, due to its massive 1800 mAh battery.
Of course it also helps that the Samsung Epix is available for $300 with a subscription, unlike the Palm Treo Pro which is only available without subsidy.

Sprint Treo Pro leaked on DSLReports
WMExperts has been keeping an eye on one the Mobile Speed test site of DSLReports, from where many Windows Mobile smartphones have been leaked before. This time they have again struck lucky, and unearthed the seemingly impossible – a GSM Treo running on the CDMA Sprint network.
Of course a CDMA Treo Pro has been rumoured for a while now, after a post in a Chinese newspaper. This leak however is the first full confirmation, and also indicated that the Treo 800w is in for a very short life span after all.

Palm Treo Pro now shipping in USA
Its been a long wait, but Palm’s most advanced Treo has just started shipping from their warehouses. The Palm Treo Pro Windows Mobile Professional smartphone is being sold unlocked at a pretty steep price of $549 without any carrier support (although the 3G will only work on AT&T).
While the Treo Pro is a very well specified device (WIFI, GPS, HSDPA, 320×320 screen, 3.5mm headphone jack) less determined buyers may want to hold out a few months, as the phone is being romoured for eventual release on AT&T (on a subsidized price) after all, in the December time frame.

Palm Treo Pro now available on Vodafone UK, coming to AT&T in December?
Treo fans in UK can now pick up the Palm Treo Pro from as little as free on Vodafone’s Business Shop. The svelte device is still fully specced with all the specs a modern Windows Mobile phone should have, such as WIFI, GPS, 3G HSDPA etc.
Unfortunately US buyers will still have to pay $549 as there is no carrier to subsidize the phone yet. WMExperts however reports that Palm has said in their latest finance call that they will be having an American carrier this year, but that the carrier certification process is delaying its release.

Palm Treo Pro now available for pre-order
The unlocked Palm Treo Pro is now available for pre-order on Palm’s UK website. The device runs at a pricy £399, but this is par for the course for such a well specified device. We were assured the locked version of the device on Vodafone will be available by middle of next week, and I would not expect the unlocked version will be far behind.
See the Palm website for more information.
LiveMesh client for Windows Mobile showed off
A native Windows Mobile client for Live Mesh has been shown off at the Microsoft TechEd Australia 2008 conference keynote running on a Palm Treo Pro.
During the short demonstration, the presenter took a photo with his mobile phone which then wireless synced with the Live Mesh computer. At present the Live Mesh can only be accessed via the browser when on your Windows Mobile device.
The keynote presenters, Dr. Neil and Amit Mital teased spoke of a broader vision of unified device management to remotely manage health, status, location and capability of devices; unified application deployment with synced configurations and settings for those applications; and finally unified data management across any device.
They gave an example of syncing a Zune to your Live Mesh cloud, vs your local PC, which seems rather ambitious. The Live Mesh client for Windows Mobile is expected to arrive within a few months.

Palm Treo Pro launch event today
We will be attending the Palm Treo Pro launch event in London today, and hope to bring you news live from the event. Given that the Palm Treo Pro is being sold unsubsidized in USA, this phone will in a way, just like the Treo 500v, become more an international that US-based phone, so this particular launch in UK may actually be much more important than it appears.
Stay tuned for much more Treo Pro news in the afternoon.
GSM Palm Treo Pro reviewed
WMexperts have put up a detailed review of the Treo Pro, and they like it. They praise most of the features, and their only real criticism is the membrane-type keyboard.
From the review its clear however that this is the most HTC and least Palm Treo yet, but this phone has finally delivered on all the till now unrequited wishes of Palm Windows Mobile users, by finally delivering a device with a high resolution screen, thin with attractive styling, 3.5mm headphone jack, WIFI and GPS and good battery life.
WMExperts gave it a 5 out of 5, and we concur. Read the full review here.
CDMA Treo Pro coming?
A Chinese News website is reporting not only that HTC is making the Palm Touch Pro (we knew this already), but that Palm will also be making a CDMA Touch Pro for Verizon and Sprint. While this is obviously good news for Palm users who have not yet jumped on the Treo 800w, it is rather a kick in the teeth to existing 800w users who have bought a device with not only dated styling but objectively inferior features such as a smaller battery and no 3.5mm headphone jack.
If Palm releases a CDMA Treo Pro in the next 6 months they are likely to see a lot of angry Treo 800w owners, and even the threat of the 800w being superseded soon may limit sales of the 800w. On the other hand, Palm could ensure the continuing success of the 800w by announcing they will sell a CDMA Treo Pro for $549 too

Treocentral unboxes the Treo Pro
Treocentral has unboxed the Palm Treo Pro and has produced the video. Apparently full reviews are still at present embargoes, so the video mainly covers the physical aspects of the device, and compares it to a wide variety of current generation devices.

The Palm Treo Pro is being made by HTC
Its no surprise to most of us really, but Digitimes has confirmed that the new Palm Treo Pro is in fact made with HTC as an ODM. This does to a point explain why the Treo Pro is as thin as the HTC Touch and also bears similar good looks.
For advanced users this is particular good news, not only because HTC is well known for good build quality, but also because this means hacker website XDA-Developers will directly support the device, unlike similar devices like the Samsung i780 which is duly ignored by the HTC-devoted site.
Interestingly, this means the large order of 5 million Windows Mobile devices for 2009 from Palm does not include the stylish and well featured Treo Pro, suggesting we can expect even more great phones from Palm in the near future.
