Xperia Growing Panel pretty cool
The Xperia X1 panel development community is pretty small, but occasionally they produce something that’s quite stunning.
The Xperia Growing Panel is one such example. The software, which is an animated display of a garden, is nice all by itself, featuring flowers growing, bees buzzing and butterflies flying about, but more interesting is the fact that all these creatures are tied into some feature or functionality of your phone.
As MSalmank on the Xperiancers blog explains:
As expected the clock at the top-left corner of the panel brings the time & date settings screen. It is the flowers and plants that actually represent different stuff. For instance the middle flower in the screen shot below represents e-mail. When a bud, you have no mail… but when blossomed, you have mail. Not only that, the flowers differ depending on time as well as when the panel is switched. The flower to the right (red bud in the screen shots) represents phone calls. I didn’t have a second phone near me otherwise would have given myself a missed call to see it in action. The flower on the left (yellow one) is SMS. The plant with the purple flowers (right side of the screen) is for phone profiles and the single stem with leaves on the left is for battery. Note in the screen shot below that when I attached the phone to my laptop and started charging the device, the bottom of the battery plant lit up… white sparks rise from the light and travel upwards fading half-way across the plant.
At the bottom of the screen are really small plants — sort of like grass — with white tips. These are hooked with Wi-Fi. When Wi-Fi is turned on and connected to, flowers grow there. The stronger the strength of the signal, the more flowers there will be. Additionally, when you have a meeting in the calendar a butterfly appears on the panel — reported to fly higher when meeting is closer. The mushroom on the screen represents Bluetooth — when activated the mushroom evolves and turns blue.
The phone profile plant wilts its flowers based on volume of the device and chosen profile (for me it only updates/changes the top two flowers). the Battery plant turns from brown to green starting from the top — the more the plant turns green, battery percentage is as less.
I am sure the software has even more features. The animation changes between day and night and even features weather.

Today they have released a new version of the Sony Ericsson Beta SDK for Windows Mobile® 6.1 which adds Xperia™ Panels with OpenGL ES support, allowing developers to incorporate a broad set of rendering, texture mapping, special effects and other powerful visualization functions. Spb Traveller wins Xperia Panel competiton
The Sony Ericcson Xperia Panels Compeition and the winner has been announced. Spb’s Traveller panel was judged the winner as the jury felt the Xperia panel was an ideal travel tool, well-packaged with a clearly defined user experience and friendly to use.
Spb Traveler from Spb Software helps you keep track of your travel arrangements and stay on top of meetings, even when abroad. It can track time for your destinations, or your favorite spots, while reminding you when your next flight is and your next rendezvous.
“The panels are an absolutely exceptional opportunity for developers, especially taking into account the X1’s on-device portal, which will help to further promote quality Windows Mobile software in this competitive market,” said Victoria Krasilshikova of Spb Software. “We had a vision of the new Spb Traveler from the start, but certainly, the idea of creating a panel for Sony Ericsson was the inspiration.”
Unique to the Spb Traveler is a 3D globe that animates your trip so you can see where you’re going and when with sleek animation. You can also use it to test your geographical knowledge in the Geo Game.
Need to know what the weather is like when you arrive in Mumbai? Done. The Spb Traveler provides global weather forecasts that coincide with your travel plans, as well as travel tools like a flight search and currency, unit, time and clothing size converters.
And if you’re in Paris and want to request a glass of water, the Multilingual Phrase Book tool will help you find the words, “Un verre d’eau, s’il vous plait.”
Among other nominees were Evernote, Ping.fm, Mobisystems (for their English to Japanese dictionary), and PlusFourSize (for the Swedish operator 3’s panel).

[Solved] XPERIA Panels on Touch HD
We have been following the process of installing XPERIA Panels on Touch HD for over two months. The guys at xda-developers seemed to make good progress on the task (Read: Here, here and here), but it was Paul from Modaco who released the first cab installer for Touch HD users.
Quoting Paul:
What’s hot…
- It works
- No ‘Panels’ button the HD of course, so you get a Panels icon on the start menu
- Performance of the actual panels is great
- It works
- AppToDate support for future updatesWhat’s not so hot (yet)…
- It takes a few seconds for the panel select app to open
- The FM Radio and Media Xperience panels don’t work properly on the HD (is the FM Radio panel outputting via extUSB?)
- The TouchFlo 3D plugin has to be disabled or pressing the home key returns you to TF3D (working on fix)
Paul did a great job and I am sure all Touch HD users will want to try this. So, if you want to put some XPERIA X1 flavor on your Touch HD, click here for instructions and the cab files for installing panels.
Tip: SE Xperia – remap the Panels button
Love your Xperia but find Panels a bit of a gimmick? This little tip will allow you to remap your Xperia Panels button to something a bit more useful.
All you have to do is navigate to:
HKLM\Software\SonyEricsson\PanelManager\ApplicationName
with your favourite registry editor and change the string value there to the path of an alternate executable.
e.g. “\..\Windows\Pie.exe”
The quotation marks and the \..\ part is important and needs to be part of the path used above.
To use the button to access your start menu you could map it to Quickmenu, a popular start menu replacement.

Xperia facebook panel updated
If you are running the Xperia facebook panel you may want to check out the More Panels page on your smartphone. The facebook panel has seen an update which, according to users, results in much faster loading and snappier performance.
You can also download the cab directly from the Sony Ericsson website here.

Make your own Xperia panels

Talking about more 3rd party panels, the owner of the mysonyericsson blog has become frustrated with how difficult it is to make the same, and has simplified the process greatly. Now just about anyone can make an HTML-based Xperia panel and after uploading the files to the blog, get delivered a .cab file ready to install to your device or distribute further.
The service comes with a tutorial which explains the process in pretty simple terms, and it seems just about anyone who can throw up a blog page can do a panel (even I made a Google search panel for myself
)

Custom Xperia navigation panel eases GPS software use

Some 3rd party Xperia panels are finally becoming available.
Zenyee Navigation Panel for the Xperia X1 has been designed by its developer to ease the setup needed when preparing to use your GPS navigation software. The application will rotate the screen, activate bluetooth, increase volume to maximum, set your backlight to maximum brightness and start your chosen GPS software. All the changes are reversed when you exit the panel.
See the video below for the panel in action.

Xperia panels on HTC Touch HD now “fully functional”
We have reported before on efforts to get the SE Xperia Panels interface on the HTC Touch HD. Earlier attempts were far from perfect, and left you stuck in the Panels interface and unable to switch to another, due to the lack of a Panels button.
It seems with some clever hackery this problem has been solved, and the Panels are now fully functional on the HTC Touch HD. For proof the team has made this Youtube video available.
The interface is now in private beta, and they hope to have the cab released to everyone interested very soon.
Keep an eye on this thread for the latest developments.

Sony Ericsson has always touted the panels interface as a development platform, and it appears at least some action is taking place there.
SE has just released a new facebook panel which by all accounts is rather excellent, allowing pretty full featured interactions.
Here is a video of the application in action.

New Panel now downloadable for Xperia X1
PocketNow reports that some new Panels have finally become available for download on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. The latest Panel is for Windows Live and does the following:
- Use Live.com for search
- Links you to Windows Live Messenger (already installed on the X1)
- Lets you synchronize email and/or contacts from your Live account and specify sync frequencies.
While the functionality is laudable I feel the Windows Live team could have done a lot more to make the UI engaging and attractive. Hopefully a 3rd party can step in and rectify this issue.
