Podcasts! Pro finally updated to Mango
There are times when Zune lets me down and does not sync my podcasts properly in the morning. That is when I reach for Podcasts! Pro, which allows one to stream podcasts pretty effortlessly.
Unfortunately up till now the app had a fatal flaw – it did not support background playback, meaning one stay one the one screen for the next 40 minutes, making checking emails and text messages pretty annoying.
The app has now finally been updated to Mango and supports both background downloading and playback of podcasts.
The app comes in both a free ad-supported and paid version, which is $1.99. The free version does not seem to have been updated yet.
Direct downloading of podcasts coming to Zune hub?

One rather annoying feature of the otherwise great podcast handling on Windows Phone 7 is the inability to download your daily podcasts over both WIFI and 3G if you missed synching your phone in the morning.
French smartphone site Monsmartphone.net reports however that the ability to do just that is latent in the player, with some hacking around with system files revealing the ability to search, download and share podcasts. The feature does however not yet work properly, but hopefully it will eventually be enabled properly in a future update.

BringCast allows downloading podcasts, now in Marketplace
Bringcast, demoed briefly above, is now available in Marketplace. An alternative to the other big pocatcher Podcast!, the software actually allows downloading audio and video podcasts directly to internal storage, unlike the streaming-only version in Podcast!
The software has a built-in database of 100 popular podcasts, more can be added manually, and can download over WIFI or 3G, and also integrates with the music and video hub.
Bringcast is $1.99 and comes with a free trial with only limits the subscriptions to 3 items.
Find it in Marketplace here.
Must-have App for Podcast Listeners
I’m a big fan of podcasts- so it’s always been a bit frustrating that Zune HD and Zune for WP7 don’t allow the user to search for podcasts on the go. Sure, I can always go to my PC to search for and subscribe to podcasts, but it sure would be nice to look up a podcast as soon as I hear about it- which is usually when I’m away from my PC. Enter the podcasts! application. This free WP7 app allows the user to search for and stream podcasts instantly over a 3G or Wi-fi connection.
Now, this only allows for streaming- you won’t be saving any podcasts to your phone by using this app. Also, if you regularly sync a specific podcast to your Zune HD or WP7, and you stream an episode using this app, it will not show as played, and you will end up with that same episode on your device the next time you sync. However, if you’re traveling and unable to sync to your computer, or you hear about a new podcast while away from home and want to listen to it immediately, this app is for you.
Some Great Microsoft Podcasts
You could say I “drank the Kool-Aid” when it comes to Microsoft stuff… the WP7, Zune HD, and the Kinect all take up real estate in my life. I’m also a bit of a knowledge junkie- I want to know the story behind the story. So I’ve really been digging these podcasts put out by Microsoft.
The Zune Insider is an audio podcast hosted by Zune staffers Jessica Zahn and Matt Akers. It comes out on Fridays, and is about 45 minutes long. Jessica and Matt discuss what’s going on at the Microsoft campus, what’s new with Zune, and interview fellow employees about upcoming or recently launched products. These two have a really fun, friendly interview style, so you’ll feel like you’re sitting in Studio D right there with them.
The Weekly Download audio podcast is hosted by Jessica Zahn (from The Zune Insider) and is a quick round-up of podcasts that are either new to the Marketplace, or just undiscovered gems. For instance, I learned that John Hodgman has a great new podcast where he acts as a judge and rules on disagreements between real people.
Finally, the video podcast InsideXbox is a great interview show where developers and programmers tell the story behind the products. The most recent episode focuses on the Transformer controller, and Lead Xbox Industrial Designer John Ikeda’s story on it’s development. This podcast is also available on Xbox Live.
You can find all of these free podcasts in the Zune Marketplace.
Podcast!–a podcast streaming app for Windows Phone 7
While podcast support is pretty good on desktop Zune, the dependence of Windows Phone 7 on synching with this software means most people will only have one chance per day to download their favourite podcast.
Podcast! is a new free app by Melting Bot software, that allows one to easily find and stream podcasts over the air, something not possible with the built-in Zune client.
The service however lacks the ability to download podcasts, making unfortunately only half a solution, but hopefully that will come in a future update.
The software can be downloaded from marketplace here.
