CES: Samsung Omnia 2 to act as Wii-like controller for Samsung’s Smart HDTV

[flv:http://wmpoweruser.com/wp-content/uploads/omnia2andtv.flv 620 347]

Samsung has been demonstrating their smart HDTV which comes with its own applications store. In the above video the TV is shown interacting with a Samsung Omnia 2 over WIFI.

Samsung will be releasing the first batch of TV apps in the spring free of charge, while premium apps will be available for purchase via the platform’s transactional interface in the summer of 2010. Consumers, for example, would be able to play Texas Hold ‘em poker with friends where the TV screen shows the table and the phone serves as the controller, while showing cards in your hand like a real poker game.

HTC HD2 vs Samsung Omnia 2 benchmarked using FPSECE Playstation emulator

Korean website KBench.com has published a video comparing the performance of the HTC HD2 vs the other Windows Mobile heavyweight, the Samsung Omnia 2, and despite the only 200 Mhz difference in the clock speed of the devices, the more modern chipset in the the HTC HD2 clearly shines through, with much smoother, better performance on the HTC HD2 than the Samsung Omnia 2.

The conclusion is certainly that if you are looking for raw performance, the HTC HD2 is the device for you.

Direct sunlight no longer a problem for OLED screens?

While we all appreciate the vividness of AMOLED screens, the displays have always come with a caveat – poor visibility in direct sunlight.

Apparently with today’s brighter displays this is no longer an issue, with the Samsung Omnia 2’s AMOLED display besting the transflective LED on the Nokia N900.

With this major disadvantage overcome there is no longer any reason why OLED can not be considered the superior display technology, with its lower power requirements, move vivid colours, deeper blacks and better display angles.

Augmented Reality finally comes to Windows Mobile

Augmented Reality, where virtual data is overlaid on real scenery, is all the rage on Android and a lesser extent on the iPhone, but the lack of Windows Mobile devices with Digital Compasses have back this field.

With the arrival of the Samsung Omnia 2 however, which not only has a digital compass, but also has this fully documented with a public API, this is no longer a barrier, leading to the development of the first real Augmented Reality app,  OMPASS – World Cities for the Samsung Omnia 2.

HyongaSoft has developed the app, which can display the directions of different cities, along with information regarding their respective countries and distances.

A Pro version will have a “city life” feature, which can display theatre, shopping, road, subway and other local information.

We can expect to hear more about the app in about 1 month’s time.

Keep an eye on HyongaSoft here for more developments.

Verizon Samsung Omnia 2 reviewed

PhoneArena has published their review of the Samsung Omnia 2 for Verizon.

They note the design is slightly different to the international version of the Samsung Omnia 2, the resistive screen is more sensitive than the original Samsung Omnia and the AMOLED screen of course pops, the skinning is as deep as we expect, and Swype keyboard was actually pretty fast and faster than the on-screen keyboard on the Touch Pro 2 or Droid.

They found the included Opera Mobile browser to be very slow (likely due to the Flash support).  They called the camera bearable, saying the DVD video recording had a pretty slow frame rate at 18 fps.Video playback was however felt to be brilliant.

They concluded:

So does the Samsung Omnia II i920 deliver? Yes and no. In one aspect, the device is a major upgrade from the original Omnia i910, as it comes with a large AMOLED display, Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro, TouchWiz 2.0, and faster processor. But at the same time other smartphones have been released, such as the HTC Imagio, DROID ERIS, and Motorola DROID, all of which have significantly changed the landscape. Because of this, we feel the Omnia II is  a few months late on the scene and doesn’t impress the power-user as much as it would have earlier this  summer. This doesn’t take away from the features the device offers, which are many, but the Imagio provides a faster Windows Mobile experience with less lag, while the Android devices are generating a larger following each day. With all of this in mind, we believe the Samsung Omnia II i920 is for the die-hard Windows Mobile user or for the consumer that either needs or is required to have a WinMo device because of their job and to run specific applications on. At this point, the average smartphone user has a selection of better and easier devices to choose from, which isn’t the Samsung Omnia II i920.

The scored the device an overall 8/10.

Swype swiped from the Samsung Omnia 2

swype

Swype is a truly novel method of text entry, and up till now you had to have a Samsung Omnia 2 to experience it.  Wait no longer however, as the good people over at Modaco have liberated it from the clutches of the device.

The cab for QVGA and WQVGA devices can be downloaded from this Modaco thread, where one can also go to read about the various issues with the purloined software.

Verizon Samsung Omnia 2 reviewed

Wirefly, a US cellphone reseller, have published this 12 minute video review of the Samsung Omnia 2 on Verizon. Overall their biggest complaint seems to be some lag when rendering menus, but they seem otherwise pretty happy with the device, noting that the similarities in the TouchWiz implementation in Samsung’s dumb and smartphones should make it an easy upgrade moving from one to the other.
