- Your recent emoticons are automatically remembered so you can quickly access them again and again.
- Simply click send to launch a new text message with your message ready to be sent.
- One click copy, enabling your message to be used in any other application on your phone.
- Search function so you don’t have to spend any time looking through the 650+ emoticons!

Mobile innovation in an unlikely place
When one thinks of third world countries, one pictures starving children, civil wars or dire economic conditions just to name a few. Interestingly, a different image sprung in my mind with the news a week or so ago about certain Google (third party contractors) poaching business from a Kenyan startup Mocality. I instead recalled a post I had read sometime back in regards to the rapid growth of mobile device usage in that country. From the article, Africa Might Just Skip the Entire PC Revolution
Earlier this year, the Chinese firm Huawei unveiled IDEOS through Kenya’s telecom titan, Safaricom. So far, this $80 smartphone has found its way into the hands of 350,000+ Kenyans, an impressive sales number in a country where 40% of the population lives on less than two dollars a day.
The country has an approximate population of 41 million with an outstanding 26.5 million mobile phone users in contrast to mere 355,493 fixed line customers!
With consumers here in the US bombarded with ads touting 4G LTE as the panacea for all our data hungry app cravings, nobody here in their right might would think that the good old SMS technology could be used for more than text messaging.
As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, facing the prospects of serving a large subscriber base living on a limited disposable income, the country’s largest carriers have come up with solutions that give their customers the best value for their money.
Homebrew tool for backing up SMS messages created but needs fully unlocked Windows Phone
Currently if one were a first generation Windows Phone 7 owner wishing to upgrade to a second generation handset one one would lose not just all your game progress and app data and settings, but also all your SMS messages.
There is no solution for the other issues yet, but ConanWTN on WPXAP.com has developed a homebrew app for backing up SMS messages on your Windows Phone.
Interestingly it appears the Windows Phone 7 OS already backs up the SMS messages from the previous day to a file \Application Data \ Microsoft \ Outlook \ BackupVols \ CommsBackup.xml. This was discovered by Thunder_ on XDA-Developers.com.
ConanWTN’s app will make daily backup of your SMS messages and store them in Isolated Storage, where they can be copied to your desktop. The next version will allow upload to SkyDrive, and also for exporting of SMS messages as text.
Unfortunately to get access to this file requires a fully unlocked Windows Phone, which means only a few devices are supported.
Read more about SMS Backup at WPXAP here.
Thanks Max for the tip.

Group SMS app now available on Windows Phone 7

Stefan Stumpfl wrote to let us know about a new Group SMS app he wrote:
Everyday when I brows through various forums I see many people asking for a way to create groups which can be used to send SMS or e-mails. Since there is no way to do this on windows phone 7 devices, I wrote an APP called Group SMS. Group SMS allows you to create groups of your contacts and send them SMS or e-mails.
The Windows Phone 7 design idea is really great, especially the panoramic view.
It makes it so much easier for the user to interact with the application without switching between multiple pages.
Group SMS perfectly adapts this design. The mainpage is a panoramic view where you can create and edit groups from your contacts and define message templates.
It also tries do adapt an very important Windows Phone concept: “get in, out, and back to life”.
It takes just a second to write a message to a group. Just start the app, tap the desired group and type the message.
Sending a predefined message is as easy and fast. Just tap the desired message on the panoramic view, swipe your finger to the left, tap the desired group and hit send. Thats probably as straight forward as it gets!By the end of the week the app will support multiple languages, this includes german, french, italian, spanish and of course english.
Future updates will also bring synchronization with google groups and windows live groups!
Group SMS is $0.99 with a free trial. Find Group SMS in marketplace here.

The memories remain
I’ll start by admitting that I have a soft spot for music, and especially music videos that tell a story. It was a contest between Daughtry’s “September” and Alan Jackson’s “ Remember when” but, hundreds of other songs could have sufficed.
Our lives are becoming more and more dependent on electronic gadgets and smartphones now almost define our identity. These devices also double as a repository for a lot of our daily experiences be it photos, videos, voicemails, text messages etc. Since the Christmas season is now upon us, these gadgets will be used to extensively record and document the family gatherings, reunions, laughter, cries and everything in between.
Paul Thurrott has an interesting article titled “The death of email” In it, he posits the theory that email is being supplanted by more instant forms of communication like SMS, IM and Facebook messages (Mr. Thurrott is not someone who casually proclaims the ‘death technology “a” or technology “b” ’ so I was curious to read what he had to say) I can attest to that fact because most of my email correspondence is now relegated to work related stuff. IM, SMS and Facebook messages/chat with an occasional phone call here and there make up the majority of communication with friends and family. I have friends who in fact are far easier to reach with the “instant” means because they will hardly ever reply to an email but they will text me back immediately. The salient portion of Mr. Thurrott’s article that I would like to highlight is when he writes
These people (meaning this generation) don’t care about us or our traditions. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not malevolent about it. They just literally don’t care. And while they may find our muttering about "retention needs" and "conversation threads" interesting in a polite, don’t-agree-too-much-or-they’ll-keep-talking-about-it kind of way, they literally don’t care. Not about our concerns. And not about our previous and old-fashioned email technologies.
HTC HD Mini, Touch Pro 2 gets ‘SMS stability’ update
HTC’s HTC Sense SMS software does not have the best reputation for speed and reliability, and while it seems recent versions of HTC Sense have fixed the issue, this does not help users running carrier ROMs.
Fortunately HTC has decided to take care of current owners by shipping a hotfix for the HTC HD Mini and HTC Touch Pro 2. The update “amends the internal management of SMS functionality, and enhances SMS transmission stability.”, and is suitable for ROM version 1.36.XX on the HTC HD Mini and ROM 2.08.XX for the HTC Touch Pro 2.
Download the HTC HD Mini version here, and the HTC Touch Pro 2 version here.
The update should leave your data untouched, but a backup is always advised.
