Official Microsoft response to the Y2k16 SMS bug
Via WMExperts we have an official response to the Y2k16 SMS bug affected some Windows Mobile handsets on some carriers.
The Microsoft spokesman says:
“Microsoft is aware of reports that phone messages received after 1/1/2010 may be dated 2016. These reports have not yet resulted in widespread customer inquiries; however, we are working closely with our manufacturing and mobile operator partners to investigate the cause and correct the issue as appropriate.”
While Microsoft pontificates a work-around is currently available which means SMS messages will get their timestamp from the phone rather than the network. It can be downloaded here.
Y2K10 SMS date bug fix now available
Apparently while the rest of us have been partying the happy hackers at PPCGeeks have been working through the night diagnosing and creating a fix for the Y2K10 SMS date bug.
Ziggy471 & Scientific have posted a .cab which corrects this issue by creating this registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\SMS]
"RecvTimeStamp"=dword:00000001
Give the fix a download and report if it solved your problem.

Y2K10 bug hits some Windows Mobile, other handsets
It seems some Windows Mobile handsets have been hit by a strange Y2K10 bug, with SMS’s apparently arriving from the year 2016.
According the WMExperts.com the story is:
Apparently not all devices are affected, so it remains a bit of a mystery. My HD2 in UK does not appear to be affected, not those of the people I asked.

Google Voice Easy SMS for Windows Mobile released – send free SMS messages over Google Voice
Google Voice Easy SMS is an SMS client for Windows Mobile designed tot take advantage of the the Google Voice system to send free SMS messages. The software integrates well into Windows Mobile by allowing one to use your already built-in contact list and features:
Features:
- Sends messages via the 3G data connection, meaning your outgoing SMS costs you nothing
- Interfaces with your phone’s contacts list
- Connects directly to Google via SSL to send your message, no man-in-the-middle servers that could potentially harvest your Google Account password
- Signature support
- Send to multiple recipients at once
- Windows Mobile Smartphone (aka Windows Phone); software has been tested on versions 6, 6.1, and 6.5, but the program may work with other versions.
- .NET Compact Framework 2.0
- A Google Voice account
- 3G or WiFi connectivity
- Data plan
- You must abide by the Google Voice terms of service when using this program
The developer, Matthew Sullivan, plans to improve contact selection in future releases, and intends to make the software open source once the code is cleaned up.
Read more about the application at Matt’s webpage here, and download version 1 of the software here, or using this Microsoft tag (gettag.mobi).
HTC HD2 SMS hotfix sneakily acknowledges problem
Many HD2 owners have been complaining of delayed SMS messages (this problem is even present when the HD2’s SMS client gets ported to other devices). Up till now we have not heard much from the company, but a small note accompanying an update to fix the issue reassures us that “keeping in touch has always been very important” and that the update will make this possible in a “fast and reliable” manner. Just what we should have expected from the start I guess.
The full update reads:
This update for HTC HD2 messaging lets you reach out to your friends and family with instant notifications. Keeping in touch has always been very important, and this update delivers just that: fast and reliable SMS messaging.
Users who have installed the recent 1.60 ROM need not bother, as the update is only needed for 1.49.XXX.X, or lower ROMs. Talking about that, an English version of the ROM update is now also available from HTC here.
Download the hotfix, which is meant to be run from your device here.
Windows Live goes twitter – gets SMS control
A new service for Windows Live has just rolled out in UK and US which allows users to update their personal message, check their Windows Live Calendar, invite people to join their network and get contact info for people in their Windows Live Contacts list.
Clearly aimed more at dumb phone than smartphone users, the ease of interaction may even seduce some smartphone owners.
To use these services, first you’ll need to register your mobile number with Windows Live and then just send a text message (SMS) with a “command” to a shortcode:
- If you’re in the US and your mobile operator is AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, or Nextel, your shortcode is MyLive or 695483.
- If you’re in the UK and your mobile operator is Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, O2, or Virgin, your shortcode is 88804.
Standard SMS messaging costs apply in both the US and UK. So your mobile operator will charge your normal rate for each text message you send and receive. There’s no additional charge from Microsoft.
After you’ve registered your phone number, and started the service, you’re ready to start sending commands. Below are all of the things you can do with SMS for Windows Live, along with the commands you’ll need to know.
To update your personal message you simply need to create a new text message, type the command update followed by your personal message, and send it to the shortcode.
Similarly, to check your calendar, send a text message with the command today or tomorrow and Windows Live will send you a text message that lists the date, time, and subject of each event. To get more details about an event, reply with the event number.
To invite some-one to your network send a text message with the command invite followed by their e-mail address and lastly, to search your contacts send a text message with the command srch followed by the name of the person you’re looking for.
For more about this new service see the Windows Live blog here.

Windows Mobile SMS Sync freeware updated to version 1.2
Biran Hamma’s Windows Mobile SMS Sync is freeware which allows a user to backup SMS messages to their desktop. It includes a desktop application for viewing and searching messages and a Wizard for uploading messages to a SQL server database.
It has been updated to version 1.2, which should help cure problems international users may have been having with the software, and also includes some new features.
The application works on XP and Vista and with both Windows Mobile 5 and 6. On the handheld it requires .Net CF 2.0 (which is built-in to all Windows Mobile 6.1 handhelds) or even the newer .Net CF 3.5
