Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 WM6.5.3 ROM update
The Sony Ericson Xperia X2 finally has the official WM6.5.3 update that was promised some time ago!
It’s available from Sony (via the SEUS tool) though it may not have spread to all locales yet. If that’s the case, XDA-Developers should have you covered with the ROM Development forum here.
As and when more is known about this update, we’ll let you know.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 MR1 update a disaster?
We received this very interesting e-mail from Dominik telling us about his woes with the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 MR1 update, which has been lauded for being comprehensive, with many improvements and has even been called “the best update ever”.
It seems everyone spoke well too soon.
Dominik writes:
Few days after X2 upgrade this is a disaster.
This device is a biggest shame I’ve seen in my life.
Basically this is unpredictable, unstable, unfinished and not proper piece of “crap”. Things randomly keep stopping working, device freezing constantly without any reason. The device has BASIC operation problems like camera not working, memory card not seen by the device – all needing soft resets.
Current behaviour of X2 is like a first firmwares I’ve seen on P990, few years back.
After upgrade I’ve had like 10 freezes through 48 hours.
Freezing without any reason – just with normal, ordinary actions I d, switching panels etc..
The software is completely not optimized at all, looks like a not finished.
I was a fan of SE smartphones (used P800, P910, P990, P1, X1). All of them served well.
As regarding X1 people experiences were very different, but generally feedback was good and deserved.
X2 has huge negative feedback right now and I’m not alone.
What is strange, the device did not behave this way before the update.
Please observe the issue. I think if SE will react ASAP, The information should be widely spread around.
You have to agree – this is just completely unacceptable from such a company!
A quick look at the update thread on Sony Ericsson’s blog, which started of rather optimistically, shows that Dominik is far from alone.
Even with MR1 applied, this phone is useless with this low level of stability and speed. I’m sorry Sony Ericsson but the Software quality of your products is a shame.
Schaotan on XDA-Developers write:
Like many others, I’m disappointed by the upgrade.
Phone is faster, surely, but random freezes are still occurring. I’m trying to troubleshoot, adapt my phone usage habits to prevent freezes, but its really bothersome and of little to no use.
Probably a brilliant strategy by Sony to get me to spend even more upgrading to the X10. Though why i let myself be repeatedly suckered by Sony is beyond me.
It appears that the MR1 update, while late, was still rushed out without proper testing. leaving even formerly satisfied users very unhappy indeed.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 MR1 update gets detailed
![]()
Sony Ericsson has delivered on their promised first update to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. On their blog they have listed the improvements the updates are set to bring and these include:
- MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6
- Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave
- Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming
- New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal
- SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced
- The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. We increased the target hit area in contacts for finger friendliness and added user friendly redial functionality
- Based on feedback from you, we really worked hard on the software keyboard (XT9) by improving speed and touch responsiveness
A further update to Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is expected eventually.

Xperiancers shuts down, with it the X2 support promises?
Sony Ericsson is shutting down its Xperiancers blog. Citing the increased importance of its Xperia brand as embodies in its X10 series, the company has now decided to move the content over to its product blog.
With the heavy emphasis on the Xperia X10 one wonders if the blog’s promises to support the Xperia X2 will also similarly vanish. An update to the little known Windows Mobile 6.5.2 has been promised in February this year to arrive in March, leaving SE with only 1.5 days to make good on it, which seems rather unlikely. In that context a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 upgrade in May, also promised by Sony Ericsson on the Xperiancers blog, seems even less so.
Hopefully the company will still make good on its promises, and not repeat its X1 mistake, which it itself acknowledged “attracted some criticism”.
Thanks Mitch for the tip.
SE Xperia X2 finally shows up on Vodafone… in Spain
![]()
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 has had an extremely rocky road to the market, especially on the Vodafone network, where in UK the device has been completely cancelled, despite being exclusive to the network.
It seems this has not stopped Vodafone, which is a global network, launching the device in other countries.
The Xperia X2 has just been launched on Vodafone Spain, and will be available to purchase from Monday next week.
The smartphone will run at EUR 700 without contract but will also be available cheaper on an 18 month contract.
According to Magnus Ahlqvist, general director of Sony Ericsson Iberia, the 8 megapixel handset will remain exclusive to Vodafone for 3 more months following the launch.
Official Xperia X2 update roadmap released, includes, WM 6.5.1, 6.5.2, but no WM7
![]()
In an interesting post on the official Sony Ericsson Xperia blog, Xperiancers, the company admitted that the Xperia X1 suffered from a lack of support, but that they did not plan to repeat this on the X2. They therefore laid out a clear roadmap for expected updates to the handset, and also made it clear from the start that X2 owners should not expect a Windows Mobile 7 update, as the hardware would not support this.
As the X2 begins to roll out globally, it’s only fair that customers know what kind of support we’ll be giving the phone in the months to come. It’s not news to say that we attracted some criticism for this on the X1 and we’re not going to go there again with the X2. So, for the record, this is what X2 customers can expect in terms of software upgrades.
In March, we’ll launch our first upgrade (MR1). It will upgrade Windows Mobile from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 (which will improve both the stability and usability of the device), it will bring in the use of video telephony, an FM radio and it will introduce fast GPS to get a quicker fix. As well as all this, MR1 will upgrade a lot of the applications in the phone to improve speed, usability and fix any bugs we find.
The second update will go live in May and this will be a big one as it moves Windows mobile onto 6.5.3. This is a significant upgrade in terms of usability, performance, power management and the browser experience.
That’s the extent of our plans at the moment but I’ll update this post as we make any more decisions.
Thanks.
Aaron
I am sure actual and potential owners of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 appreciate such openness and also reassurance that the Windows Mobile handset, running an OS which is currently not extremely favoured by SE, will continue to receive support in the coming months.
Thanks Christopher for the tip.
PhoneArena reviews the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2
Phonearena have published their review of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. The handset has recently been showing up in secondary markets and PhoneArena has been able to give it a good hands-on.
While they recognize the improvements over the original Xperia X1 they device did not impress them.
They concluded:
We were pleasantly impressed by the Xperia X1 when it rolled out, so we just could not wait to take a closer look at its successor. We had to wait for more than a year until our wish came true and as time went by, our expectations hit the ceiling. Now, when we have examined the handset in details we feel disappointed at its performance. It is merely a jazzed up version of the X1, but not a worthy successor. Aside from minor improvements to its overall design and panel interface, the Xperia X2 doesn´t offer anything new, there is nothing about it to wow us. Was it worth waiting for? No. Does it deserve your attention? Only if you are looking for a handset that is more exotic than its Windows Mobile brethren.

Xperia X2 not dead yet, gets a North American version
For those like me who thought the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 would live and die by the UK market, where Vodafone recently dropped it, an interesting surprise is the handset showing up in Sony’s American Style store with the Xperia 2a moniker.
The handset appears identical to the version being shown elsewhere, but likely sports North American frequencies and an exorbitant price tag.
Despite the device showing up, there is still no indication when the handset will actually drop, with rumours of a summer showing circulating at present.
See the device at Sony Style here.

CES: SE Xperia X2 makes it to CES
The X2 was one of the devices that I was not expecting at CES, after it being delayed for ever, I am surprised the phone made it in time for its flight(joke). The recently released and recently dropped Sony Ericsson device made it to CES and BGR is reporting that it looks good. The device if you are not aware has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, DLNA media server support and TV out, too, with a 8.1 megapixel camera sensor with auto focus. This device is a good phone, but the wait time is just too much and now Pocketnow is reporting that the USA will have to wait till summer to get some X2 love, which is just too much, so I am not sure about this device anymore.

Confirmed – Xperia X2 officially dropped by Vodafone
We have now received an official confirmation from a Sony Ericsson spokesperson that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.
The statement reads as follows:
Sony Ericsson can confirm that the X2 will not be released by Vodafone in the UK. The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing and the product, which was exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, no longer fits within their planned portfolio. The handset is available in other Sony Ericsson markets however. Sony Ericsson is disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK but in 2010 the company will be offering a number of innovative, stand-out products in the market.
While most of our readers will not miss the device, it is of note that at present there is no Windows Mobile phone with an 8 megapixel camera, and that the Xperia X2 corrected most of the deficiencies of the X1, meaning its loss will leave somewhat of a hole in the whole Windows Mobile ecosystem.
Given Sony Ericsson’s history with the X1 and X2, would our readers trust them with another handset? Let us know below.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 dropped by Vodafone
We have been able to confirm that the much delayed Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.
In an e-mail circulated internally yesterday, staff were told the handset will no longer be sold by the carrier.
This move is likely to be a nail in the coffin for the troubled handset, which has seen an ever lengthening route to market, and we will likely see any already manufactured stock being sold off by small dealers, as we have seen yesterday.
We will ping our Sony Ericsson rep for comment, but I think its relatively safe to say:
Xperia X2 – RIP 4-1-2010
