Xperia X2 now on sale?
Online retailer Plemix.com is now offering the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 for £474.44. The much delayed handset was expected around November last year, but was most recently scheduled for release in early January.
The 8 megapixel Xperia X2 has been set to be released exclusively on Vodafone UK, but of note is that the phone no longer appears on the Coming Soon section of Vodafone’s online store, and is also not available in the store itself.
The Xperia X2 is significantly improved over its predecessor, with a larger screen, better keyboard and better camera, but the older generation Qualcomm processor it uses has not endeared it to many reviewers.

Xperia X2 delay confirmed
We posted about the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 delay a few weeks ago, and the company has finally come around to officially admitting it.
In a blog post on their Xperiancers blog they admit the device will be coming “in the first weeks of January”, blaming they delay on work in optimising battery life:
Hi All – Over the last couple of weeks there has been a few, OK more than a few rumours that the X2 is going to be delayed until January and I’m sure it will not come as a surprise when we say that these are well founded.
The software worked fine but when we started integrating it with some of the network specific apps it threw up a few issues which we’re working to fix.
It’s all minor tweaks really (extending the battery life and speeding up aspects of the software), but we want to be sure that when we ship this it is as good as it should be and that you don’t have to constantly upgrade the software as we iron out these wrinkles.
So… we’re launching first week of January. Really sorry if you were looking forward to getting hold of one before then but it will be worth it when we get there.
With devices such as the LG eXpo and HTC HD2 making the smartphone appear rapidly obsolete, one wonders if anyone will really be around left to care.

SE Xperia X2 now delayed till January 2010
Sony Ericsson is not having much luck these days, and it has nothing to do with their choice of operating system. In a week which saw their two flagship Symbian smartphones taken off the market due to bugs, it appears now that their Windows Mobile smartphone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, has been delayed all the way to next year, missing any Christmas season boost they were expecting to receive.
The smartphone was originally expected in “early Q4 2009” but now seems, according to Vodafone at least, destined to arrive only in January 2010, and of course even this is provisional.
Due to repeated delays the smartphone continues to fall behind current technology, and is likely to look a poor second to HTC’s next generation of Windows Mobile business smartphones.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 video review
Knowyourmobile.com have published this video review of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. the device appears to be nearing release, as a number of reviews have shown up today.
Knowyourmobile complained of the poorly responsive resistive screen, but otherwise concluded:
… the Xperia X2 makes a pretty strong case for itself. The 8.1-megapixel camera offers touch focus, and although we’re yet to give it a full test, it would certainly at least seem to be the most powerful Windows 6.5-powered camera we’ve seen yet.
.
.
The issues we can see the Xperia X2 potentially stumbling into relate to this exact thing – that perhaps it’s a phone trying to do too much at once. The X2 takes the Windows 6.5 OS, which has a less simple interface than rivals like the iPhone OS and Android, and sticks-on some friendly looking front-ends to soften the landing.
However, it’s also trying to be a top-end cameraphone – even if it can’t quite compete with the Satio in pure megapixel terms – a strategy generally sidestepped by just about every other smartphone using one of the latest operating systems.
Can the Xperia X2 be all things to all people (as long as they can afford the likely £35 a month contract, that is)? We’re not as yet sure, but the Xperia X2 certainly comes up with come compelling arguments for itself.
Techradar has had a look at the device, and notes it has high build quality, claims it has an OLED screen (as far as we know this is not true, but gives and indication of the screen quality) and feels it fixes many issues of the original device, such as the keyboard, but remain unconvinced by the Panels concept and the slow 528 Mhz Qualcomm processor that powers it.
They conclude:
Overall, we’ve got mixed feelings about the X2. We weren’t fans of the X1 and while this appears to be a pretty good upgrade, the judder of the software made us think that we’ve got another WinMo worry on our hands.
But there’s still time before the launch at the end of the month, and if things are speeded up by then Sony Ericsson will have a pretty nifty device to launch through Vodafone.
I expect we should all be able to make up our minds soon enough.

For Developers: XPERIA X2 PlayNow Arena now accepting Panels, Applications submissions
XPERIA™ Panels and Windows Mobile® applications can now be submitted to the Sony Ericsson PlayNow™ arena one-stop content store and also Fun & Downloads.
The XPERIA™ Panel user experience is unique to Sony Ericsson. Panels are applications that extend the Today Screen API in order to provide a Full Screen immersive experience. The user benefits from configurable, finger-tip access to applications, including the ability to download additional Panels from PlayNow™ arena.
For the developer, the Panel UI means that applications are easily downloaded and are only a click away.
New with XPERIA™ X2, Panels can also be Java ME, Capuchin or Flash applications running within the Panel Manager.
Panelizer tools included in the Sony Ericsson Panel SDK make it possible for developers to convert existing applications in to XPERIA™ Panels:
- Java Panelizer – turns jad/jar in to a Panel
- Flash Panelizer – turns Adobe Flash swf in to a Panel
- EXE Panelizer – turns existing EXE application in to a Panel
- NET Panelizer – turns existing .net application in to a Panel
submit.sonyericsson.com is the portal where developers can submit applications, games and Panels for sale or free download in Sony Ericsson’s channels to market: PlayNow™ arena and Fun & Downloads. Submission is free of charge, and there is no need to certify the content until it has been accepted for deployment. Developers receive a 70% share of net revenue.
From today, developers are able to upload XPERIA™ Panels and Windows Mobile applications and games.
Developers may also submit generic (non-Panelized) Windows Mobile applications, however the Panel interface makes it so much easier for the user to access applications that it’s worth the very small effort to use the free Panelizer tools.
The Panel SDK for X2 also enables developers to produce:
- XPERIA™ Native Panels
- XPERIA™ Web (HTML) Panels
- XPERIA™ Panels with OpenGL® ES 1.1 support
XPERIA™ X2 will be available in selected markets from early Q4 2009, and we developers are invited to submit Panels now and be the first to benefit from this new opportunity.

SE Xperia X2 unboxing video
[flv:http://www.theunwired.net/media/video/09.09.21%20Sony%20Ericsson%20Xperia%20X2%20Unboxing.flv 640 506]
TheUnwired.net has unboxed the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. While the device is not the final unit it does give a good indication of what can be found in the box.
Interestingly, for the first time it is revealed the device will be made by Mobinnova, a large ODM in Taiwan, but certainly not a company that has a lot of experience with Windows Mobile.

SE Xperia X2 coming to France November for 600 Euro
There have been some rumours the the Xperia X2 will be coming to shopping shelves only next year. Mobinate was able to confirm that the device will be hitting the French market much sooner, in November this year. The price was also confirmed at 600 Euro:

Xperia X2 price confirmed
![]()
Putting to rest rumours that the Xperia X2 will cost up to 800 Euros (around $1200), Solapalmari was able to confirm with a Sony Ericsson senior executive the device will ion fact be between 590 and 600 Euro (around $880). This is on the high end of previous estimates which placed it between 500 and 600 Euro, but not unexpected.
It does price the device a bit higher than its most direct competitor, the HTC Touch Pro 2, currently sells for €449,99, but then the Touch Pro 2 does lack the 8 megapixel camera with dual flash of the X2, 3.5mm headphone jack and of course the Sony Ericsson name. Its other competitor, the Samsung Omnia Pro, has not been priced yet.

Thanks Raggio for the tip.
Xperia X2 gets a price, release date
There are some who feel the relative lack of success of the Xperia X1 was related to the long period of time between its announcement and release date. There are many others who feel it was due to its very high price.
It seems Sony Ericsson is determined to repeat both mistakes, with eXpansys showing a tentative release date for the device on the 11th January 2010, for the eye-watering price of £604.99 ($1005).
Hopefully eXpansys has it completely wrong, and the device will reach the market much sooner and at a much lower price. Something tells that is not the case however…

A closer look at the SE Xperia X2 user interface
HardwareZone has given the user interface of the Xperia X2 a going over, and has published this video review.
PhoneArena previews the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2
PhoneArena has given the Xperia X2 a good going over, and as usual their preview seems more detailed than most reviews.
Their 4 page preview-review contains numerous pictures, screen shots and even a 360 degree flash animation of the device.
They conclude their preview with their outlook for the device:
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 does have what it takes to make it to the top and give the other high-end Windows-powered handsets a good run for their money. All interface improvements and the 8-megapixel camera that it comes equipped with will probably be its major weapons in the upcoming battle for supremacy. Still, let´s wait and see; only time will tell. The manufacturer has still not announced an official release date. Some rumours go the phone is rolling out in Q4 this year, others have it sales are kicking off as soon as October. The latest information comes from the Expansys blog and says the X2 is coming out January 2010. Whatever the case, there´s not much time until we see it hit the shelves and we can´t wait to get our hands on a retail unit.
