Dazzboard – new easy to use media transfer interface for smartphones
Many of us use drag and drop to manage our media on our smartphones. Dazzboard aims to go one better, by providing a browser-based user interface for your drag and drop media.
Dazzboard runs on your browser and works with any device which supports USB Mass Storage mode. Once you’re set up, you’ll be able to view and manage all of your phone’s content on the Dazzboard homepage. You can also transfer files from your PC to your phone, including your entire iTunes library.
Dazzboard also lets you download content to your phone from your other social networking sites like Facebook, Flickr and YouTube with the "Dazz me!" bookmarklet.
Dazzboard also has an interesting user discovery aspect: Videos, music and photos from other sources appear on the site. You can then grab this content, place it in a transfer queue (which appears on your Dazzboard page) and then transfer it to your phone. This include media such as Youtube videos.
Without an easy to use media source such as iTunes an application such as Dazzboard makes a lot of sense, and makes a break from many other synchronization products that try to do too much.

New in the WMPU store – Auto Send Media
Auto Send Media (ASM) is designed to send photos & documents created on your Windows Mobile phone to designated e-mail addresses in real-time. It can also upload the newly created files to FTP server (most cable modem subscribers such as Road Runner have their own FTP server where they can upload files for personal web pages.)
The program automatically sends any photos taken by your phone’s camera, or any newly created documents such as notes, spreadsheets to specified e-mail addresses and/or to an FTP server in real-time. This system eliminates the need to transfer camera phone photos or backup documents to your PC by docking it to the PC or remove the memory card from the phone then plug it into the PC to transfer photos.
You can specify whether to only send newly created media (such as photos produced by the phone’s camera) or whenever a file is modified (such as a note or spreadsheet.)
This provides a feature missing from most other sync services – versioning. By e-mailing documents to remote storage (such as a 10 Gb G-mail account) multiple versions of a file can co-exists, backed up securely and indexed by date, with the ability to easily refer back to older copies.
ASM can also be used as a standard FTP client to upload and download files between your mobile device and remote FTP server.
Features:
- * Convenience: Automatically e-mail media such as photos and documents created in real-time as soon as they are created on your phone.
- * Convenience: Automatically upload media to specified remote FTP server.
- * Value-Added: Can be used as a standard FTP client to upload files on your mobile device to remote FTP server in manual mode.
- User-friendly: Designed for minimal user intervention and effort to capture media created on your phone.
- * Easy Access: Always available from the Windows Mobile title bar and a tap away.

Google Sync finally comes to Windows Mobile
This is one many people have been waiting a long time for, and now its finally here. Google has just announced that Google Sync has finally come to Windows Mobile, allowing seamless exchange-like contacts and calender sync to your smartphone for free. In fact the technology is based on Exchange Activesync, which Google licensed from Microsoft.
Once you set up Sync on your phone, it will automatically begin synchronizing your address book and calendar in the background, over-the-air. Sync uses push technology so any changes or additions to your calendar or contacts are reflected on your device in minutes.
Sync is bi-directional, meaning changes made both on your phone or on the web are instantly reflected. The data can also be restored to new devices should you lose your current one.
The service is currently in beta, so Google warns that a backup should be made before the software is installed. For the brave the software is available to download from Google here.
Vufone, another cloud-based sync solution

You wait all day for the bus, and then three arrive at the same time…
Much like the browser situation on Windows Mobile, which went from near no choice to an overwhelming selection, the cloud-based sync environment has just exploded with choice recently on Windows Mobile. We have the now venerable Dashwire, we have Sprite’s solution and we have Microsoft’s impending MyPhone service, and now we have Vufone also.
Vufone is a new service which allows mobile phone users to backup, synchronize and manage their phone on the web. The software, which supports Windows Mobile, Symbian and also Java-based phones is said to allow seamless, periodical, automated and simple bi-directional synchronization or contacts, calendar, messages, images and photos, video files and music to a secured account on the web. vufone also allows you to mesh up and share your data with services such as Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Youtube, Google Calendar and Google contacts.
Uniquely the service does not just allow one to backup media and access it from the web, but also for example play mp3′s and videos synched from your device directly from the website.
The service allows one to sync, backup and restore contacts, calender, pictures and other media , and also move it from your old phone to your new one.
Some of the extra features of the service are:
- Create online albums and show them to friends and family on the Web
- Send your pictures and videos to friends’ phones
- Upload your mobile photos and videos to your favorite social network like Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, YouTube
- View your photos and videos online in full quality
- MyPersona – make your picture appear on your friends phone when you call them
- Grab pictures from any Internet site directly to your vufone account and your phone using our Internet Explorer and Firefox plug-ins.
- Turn any web picture into your phones wallpaper
- Listen to your mobile music online
Most of the functionality of the service is free, but extra features such as more regular automatic sync than every month will cost extra. If uses sign up before 1 March however they will get 1 years service free.
See the Vufone website for more information.
KeepSync – Live Mesh competitor announced
Proxure, a Californian company, has just announced a new syncing service which, much like Live Mesh, allows consumers and business users to synchronize everything from digital photos to office documents. The service can work across multiple devices and operating systems, and, example, can automatically and simultaneously sync photos from your mobile phone to your laptop, your desktop, and to friends and family.
The service depends on clients on the device, and has no cloud-based component, unlike Live Mesh. It is however opportunistic, and will queue up files to sync whenever a connection becomes available. Clients are at present available for Vista and Windows XP, with a special version for HP’s Touch Smart PC’s. A Windows Mobile beta is currently also available, with an Android, iPhone and MacOS version being planned.
KeepSync does have some twists. It will, for example, automatically transcode video to a format more palatable for a recipient (thinks Orb) and resize pictures for easier transmission.
Unlike Live Mesh, Keepsync does have a business model. They plan to charge for the traffic across the internet using pre-paid plan, from 1 credit per megabyte. This is of course the great weakness of the product, and is sure to impede adoption.
They do however have an SDK available which was for the HP TouchSmart implementation of KeepSync and was recently licensed by AMD for use with their Fusion platform.
The service will be demonstrated at CES, but the product is also currently available with a 15 day free trial, including 25 MB of credits from Keepsync.com. There is also the opportunity to apply for their Windows Mobile beta.
Microsoft Phone Data Manager – native sync for all your phones
Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta, a product of Microsoft India, is a sync application designed for Windows that is designed to take away the worry of losing data on your phone – specifically contacts, music, pictures and videos. It does that by synchronizing your phone contacts with Microsoft’s Windows Live Contacts store in the cloud, or by helping you download files from the phone to your local computer. The application is cross platform and works with a variety of phones, both smart and dumb.
Phone Data Manager synchronizes the contacts present in your phone with your contact store on Windows Live Contacts, which is the same store that your Hotmail contacts uses. This way, your phone contacts are always present on the internet, accessible via the contacts link on Hotmail. If you lose, or simply change your phone, all you need to do is to synchronize the contacts, and all the contacts that you stored in your Windows Live Contacts store will be downloaded to your phone. You can synchronize your contacts as many times as you like so that the changes you make (edits, additions or deletions) on your phone, or on the computer on Windows Live Contacts are always reflected on both your phone and the Windows Live Contacts store.
In its current form, Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta will download the music, pictures and videos present in your phone to a local folder on the computer you are using this application on.
Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta works either over Bluetooth or via a USB cable. In order for your phone to work with this application, the phone needs to support some common standards. For contacts synchronization, your phone needs to support the SyncML standard, and for file download it needs to support OBEX. A list of supported phones can be found here.
Read more and download the application here.
Live Mesh now Windows Mobile accessible
Following on the expansion of the closed Live Mesh beta to the general public, Microsoft has now also opened up a mobile site usable by more limited browsers like Pocket IE. The site, at M.Mesh.com is still not the full folder sync that has been promised, but does make the full cloud interface accessible on the move, allowing to to create, access, and delete folders, and also to upload files. Special provision has been made to upload pictures, and when you upload pictures a special Mobile Pictures folder is automatically created.
So far the project seems to be progressing smoothly and rapidly. I still cant wait for the full mobile client, which promises a mobile device that’s automatically backed up and with the content accessible from anywhere.
