Microsoft and T-Mobile USA “quite pleased” with Windows Phone sales
Speaking to Seattle Times Philipp Humm, T-Mobile US CEO, had some good things to say about the performance of Windows Phone handsets on their network.
The interview had the following questions about Windows Phone.
Q: T-Mobile made a commitment to push Windows Phone this year. How is that working out?
A: I think we have a very good relationship with Microsoft, and we discovered that, in particular, for customers who are new to smartphones, they really enjoy the simplicity of the Microsoft [user interface], so they like the design and the ease of it.
Q: Are Windows phones selling as well as you hoped?
A: We are so far quite pleased and I think Microsoft, if you talk to them, [is] quite pleased with T-Mobile.
While AT&T is the “premier” Windows Phone network it is in fact T-Mobile USA which is most in need of a flagship devices, given its lack of the iPhone. In the first few months of the year the T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 were consistently the second best selling phone on the network, and the HTC Radar before this did not do too badly either. It is therefore a pity since the HTC HD7 no high-end Windows Phones has been released on the network.
Hopefully both Microsoft and T-Mobile being pleased will translate into an even better selection of Windows Phone on that networks.

T-Mobile reminding buyers they have a Nokia phone also–makes Lumia 710 free on contract
Not wanting to be lost in the hubbub about the Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T, T-Mobile wants to remind buyers if they want a Nokia Windows Phone they also have one handy, and you can have one without shelling out anything.
The Nokia Lumia 710 was one of T-Mobile’s best selling handsets since January, but has slipped in March, and would clearly benefit from having sales stimulated once again.
For the month of April the Nokia Lumia 710 will be free on contract in T-Mobile, with buyers being given a $50 mail in rebate after purchasing the $50 handset.
Buyers will also benefit from free custom "Xpress-on" backplate in white, cyan, fuschia, or yellow to replace the white or black version, available at Nokiacolorcover.com. The sign up site requires that owners enter in their IMEI, phone number, and purchase date in order to qualify, and then Nokia will send the cover out for free.

Nokia Lumia 710 “consistently … among the most popular phones in the T-Mobile lineup”
News.com reports that the Nokia Lumia 710 is doing relatively well on T-Mobile USA.
"Since launch (the Lumia 710) has consistently been among the most popular phones in the T-Mobile lineup," said Cara Walker, a spokeswoman for T-Mobile. "We’re very pleased with the product and the reception it’s getting among our customers."
T-Mobile and Nokia, while declining to provide specific sales figures, said they were pleased with the Lumia 710′s performance.
Nokia spokesman Keith Nowak: "We are certainly pleased with the positive momentum that we are seeing with our initial Lumia offering in the U.S., as well as the reaction we have seen from customers."
"If you’re new to the smartphone space, and there’s no lock-in to the iOS or Android ecosystem, it’s a great alternative," said Christopher Collins, an analyst at market research firm Compete.
The Lumia 710 is among the top five phones ordered online at T-Mobile, according to Compete. In February, the first full month of sales, it was added to online shopping carts more often than any phone except the Samsung Galaxy S II and the T-Mobile G2X, the firm said.
With online sales typically make up 30 percent to 40 percent of a carrier’s total sales, the Lumia 710′s performance online is likely indicative of its success at retail stores, said Collins.
Other web sites also show the Lumia 710 has done well. It’s one of the top three phones listed for T-Mobile at Amazon. Online cell phone retailer Wirefly lists it in the top five, and the company has said it has held up strongly in the past two months.
Collins notes that unlike past efforts with Windows Phone, T-Mobile sales representatives have been more willing to recommend the device.
"T-Mobile has been a pretty good partner in terms of executing on retail," Collins said. "Nokia has put a lot of energy behind it, which you haven’t seen in the U.S."
In addition, the different feel of Windows Phone has helped the phone stand out among a sea of Android and BlackBerry devices at the carrier.
"I really expect to see interest decay when the 900 launches at AT&T," Collins said. "But so far it’s been a pretty strong introduction to the market."

Nokia gives the best T-Mobile Windows Phones salesman VIP CES trip
Now here is an Amazing Everyday I am sure most of us can identify with! Nokia took the best Windows Phone 7 salesman on T-Mobile on a week-long VIP trip to CES in Las Vegas, which involved rides in Ferraris and helicopters and meeting numerous VIPs.
Changing the attitude of sales staff at mobile phone stores to Windows Phone and Nokia handsets is a very important element of the new push by Nokia into USA, so I expect we will be seeing a lot more of this kind of incentivising over the next few months.
Thanks Nope for the tip.
Microsoft going round #smokedbywindowsphone carrier sales reps
The video above has just popped up on YouTube, seemingly showing Microsoft taking the Smoked by Windows Phone challenge to carrier retail stores, and using it not just to show customers but more importantly carrier sales staff, that Windows Phone 7 is faster and more efficient.
I am sure no matter what else happens, this sales rep will remember that Windows Phone is faster to use, which will hopefully also translate into the same pitch used on incoming consumers.
See another example after the break.

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 reviewed
MobileTechReview have posted their as usual very thorough review of the Nokia Lumia 710.
They were pretty happy with the handset, especially when the low price is taken into consideration, and concluded:
There’s a lot to like in Nokia’s first US Windows Phone. The bargain price belies a solid set of features; quick performance and an elegant though not thin design. Call quality is excellent, the camera takes good photos and the phone is fast. Gaming is fluid and fun, the Zune music experience is as ever enjoyable and streaming video plays well over T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. If you’re looking for an easy to pocket smartphone that’s wallet-friendly, the Nokia Lumia 710 is worth a look. It beats the HTC Radar 4G Windows Phone on T-Mobile for both price and specs, and it’s a lovely introduction to Windows Phone. We do wish the front buttons weren’t so maddeningly difficult to press and that the Lumia 710 had the mobile hotspot feature, but those are our only two complaints.

The handset will go on sale on the 11th January 2011 on T-Mobile USA and pre-orders are open now.

HTC HD7 no longer available on T-Mobile USA
T-Mobile has gotten rid of its last large-screened Windows Phone 7 handset, effectively leaving prospective Windows Phone 7 buyers with currently only the choice of the HTC Radar or in the near future the Nokia Lumia 710.
Rightly or wrongly, buyers associate large screens with high end devices, effectively meaning if you want a high-end handset the only choice is to go to AT&T, where the 4.3 inch Samsung Focus S or 4.7 inch HTC Titan can be purchased for considerably more of course.
The same issue exists on Verizon with the HTC Trophy and Sprint with the HTC Arrive.
While we recognize Microsoft’s decision to attack the low-end high volume value segment of the market with Windows Phone 7, not having high-end hero devices available on the same network will do real damage to the brand.
