Telstra HTC 7 Mozart NoDo update to be releases soon

telstraupdate

According to Telstra’s Software update page, the Australian carrier has finished testing the NoDo update for the HTC 7 Mozart, and are expecting it to become available in early May.

With Telefonica Telstra is the last hold-out for the NoDo update, but it seems subscribers there will not have to wait much longer.

Telstra HTC HD7 buyers being treated to 2 free Xbox games or 3000 points

telstraofferNot quite at the same level as giving away free Xbox Arcades, Telstra and Microsoft are promoting the newly introduced HTC HD7, which just became available on Telstra in Australia, with the choice of either two free Xbox games or 3000 Xbox Live points.

The offer is only available between the 8th April and the 31st May and limited to the first 5000 purchasers, whichever comes first.

Telstra only pushing pre-NoDo this week, NoDo some time in April

At present Telstra is carrying the HTC Mozart and the LG Optimus 7Q (better known as the Quantum) and will soon have the HTC HD7.

Windows phone 7 has been selling well down under, and obviously these users are as eager to get their updates as everyone else.

On their new HTC HD7 pricing announcement page the company has announced their time scale for the push.

The wrote:

Software updates for our current Windows Phone 7 customers
We know our Windows Phone 7 customers want the latest, best-performing software for their smartphones. We’re working with Microsoft and phone makers to deliver OS updates as quickly as possible. The Windows Phone 7 ‘pre-update’ has passed Telstra’s test program and we expect Microsoft to make it available to our 7 Mozart and LG Optimus 7Q customers late this week or early next week. Additional software updates for both devices will follow in April.

Hopefully testing for the NoDo update will progress much more rapidly than the Pre-NoDo update, but I suspect “in April” actually means late in April and likely May for most users.

Thanks Chris for the tip.

Telstra makes HTC HD7 official, expected to do well down under

HTC-HD7-on-Next-G-network-front-loresTelstra has confirmed they will be launching the HTC HD7 exclusively on the 29th March on their Telstra Next G® network.

“We are pleased to announce the HTC HD7 will be available exclusively on the Telstra Next G® Network in March,” said Ben Hodgson, Country Manager, HTC Australia and New Zealand. “HTC has shown strong leadership in developing Windows® based devices in the past, illustrating our ability to be first-to-market. The HTC HD7 continues along this tradition with its focus on providing the ultimate multimedia experience coupled with a nice simple user interface and access to a broad range of useful applications.”

According to Smarthouse.com.au, which we heard is not the most reliable source in the world, analysts are saying Windows Phone 7 is performing very well in Australia. They quote Mark Novosel, Market Analyst Communications, as saying the platform has done “extremely well in Australia” during the last quarter after all three carriers, Telstra, Vodafone and Optus backed the platform selling WP7 Smartphones from HTC, Samsung and LG.

Mark did not reveal numbers, but Smarthouse pegs it in the 5% range.  At Mobile World Congress Telstra Corp. Ltd. CEO David Thodey said  Windows Phone 7 devices have accounted for about 7 to 8 percent of new sales at Australia’s largest phone company since they were introduced late last year.

Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, said “Microsoft has made the case for Windows Phone 7′s differentiation and improved integration.” Microsoft next has several critical steps to take, according to Rubin: “Close the feature gap, offer more exclusive capabilities, work with partners to deliver hardware with better differentiation, and leverage its extensive experience in driving developer communities to increase its app offerings.”

“HTC HD7 arrives at a time when Aussies are increasingly turning to their smartphones for entertainment and gaming,” said Andrew Volard, Director, Telstra Mobility Products. “They’re going to love the HTC HD7’s huge screen for playing video or streaming YouTube®. Its snappy performance and access to a growing catalogue of Xbox LIVE® games also makes a really exciting games platform. And perhaps most importantly for our customers, the HTC HD7 is really simple to use with the Windows® Phone 7 operating system making navigation, composing email and accessing information incredibly easy.”

The HTC HD7 is available for RRP $768 which can be repaid over 24 months when purchased in conjunction with a Consumer Telstra Next G® Cap plan or a Telstra Business Mobile PLUS Plan. It is available from 29 March from Telstra Stores and partners.

Telstra HTC HD7 expected on the 29th March

A week ago we wrote about the HTC HD7 being rumoured for a Telstra launch on the 15th March.  As that day has come and gone with no HD7, a push-back has obviously taken place.

InfiniteMonkeyblog writes that the HTC HD7 is now expected on the 29th according to  Whirlpool user Mercurysteve23.

Some more support for this is an invitation sent to the media in Australia to attend a “briefing and product demonstration” of the device on Wednesday, 23 March, according to Goodgearguide.com.au. They speculate it may be an exclusive to the carrier, who has been working hard to promote the OS, and currently holds an HTC Mozart exclusive on the continent.

For more information about price plans see InfiniteMonkeyblog here.

HTC HD7 joining other Windows Phones on Telstra soon

InfiniteMonkeyblog is reporting on some rumours that Telstra may be getting the HTC HD7 shortly. The Australian network already has the HTC 7 Mozart and the LG Quantum.

The rumour was started by a Telstra employee posting on the Whirlpool forums, and states that the 4.3 inched screened handset will be available to order on the 15th March.

They write:

I do not usually post but as a Telstra employee I can tell you that the HD7 is listed as available to order March 15th, cheers.

Telstra CEO David Thodey has recently said Windows Phone 7 devices have accounted for about 7 to 8 percent of new sales at Australia’s largest phone company since they were introduced late last year, so and additional and attractive handset should just boost that number.

Windows Phone 7 Find My Phone nabs Aussie thief

stopThiefThe ITWire has a nice story on how Windows phone 7’s free Find My Phone feature has helped catch a golf bag thief in Australia.

They write:

Friday after work I zipped down for a cheeky 9 holes of golf to wrap up the week.  After a stellar round :) , I retired to the 19th hole for a post-game debrief, leaving my golf bag outside the club house with a number of other bags, etc.”
“A very short while later, I discovered my golf bag was missing (which had my Windows Phone in the pocket).  I tried ringing the phone a couple of times to no avail, and reported the missing bag at the clubhouse – assuming that someone had mistakenly picked up the wrong bag in the fading light.”
“On arriving home, I was straight onto Windows Phone 7 “FindMyPhone”; the phone was heading north-east at a great rate of knots (I imagined a speedy getaway down an undulating dusty road!).  The phone came to rest later that night in [some 80km away].  Long story short, called police that night, made a statement next day, the police sent a unit there today and on finding my stuff charged a person with theft (and no doubt, being a goose).  [I ] Had to identify my clubs and phone later this evening at the local station whilst answering a bunch of questions from the CIB, etc. about this wonderful device called a Windows Phone!

Windows Phone 7 is pretty popular in Australia, with Telstra Corp. Ltd. CEO David Thodey saying  Windows Phone 7 devices have accounted for about 7 to 8 percent of new sales at Australia’s largest phone company since they were introduced late last year.

While there have been many rumours of Apple’s similar service going free, Apple has so far required iPhone users to pay $99 for the same privilege, meaning most iPhones are not covered by this extra layer of protection.

Edit: Find my phone is free for iPhone 4′s and recent iOS devices, but not older iPhones.

Telstra HTC Mozart network configuration issue causes massive battery drain

lowbatteryOn Chris Walsh’s blog we can read more than attempts to jailbreak Windows Phone 7.

He reports on on severe battery issues on the HTC Mozart, apparently brought on by a configuration issue related to the APN used the the device to access the network.

Apparently the issue is so severe the device could last no longer than 6 hours per day without significant use.

He writes:

I’ve been working with a technician from Telstra for the last 2 weeks debugging the issues.  The root of the cause has come down to the way the Phone is configured to operate on the Next G network.  By default, the phone uses the telstra.wap APN (Access Point Name) to connect you to the interwebs.

The “issue” isn’t one that “we” fully understand at the moment, it could be a configuration issue on the Telstra network or a software configuration change on the device.  But Telstra understand the issue and are actively working to get a fix.

A workaround is available for all those who can’t wait for a ROM upgrade.  All you need to do is add an APN in the “mobile network” configuration settings.  The APN is “telstra.iph”.

He reports the fix increased battery life from around 6 hours to a much more reasonable 24 hours, with the only negative effect being unable to see the “My Bill” part of the Telstra Portal.

To set the new APN, go to Settings > mobile network.  Scroll right to the bottom and click “add apn”.  In the APN box, type “telstra.iph” and click the tick icon in the Application Bar.

Are any of our Australian readers facing this issue, and have this fix worked for you? Let us know below.

Telstra using interactive window display to sell Windows Phones

Microsoft and their partner in Australia, Telstra, is going a bit further than just bringing the Old Spice Guy to Australia to promote Windows Phone 7.

In the above video we see a state of the art projection and touch film system in a window display at Telstra ‘s T-Life in Bourke Street, Melbourne, allowing passers-by to interact with a giant Windows Phone 7 handset without even coming into the store.

While handset stock is still low in Australia, we expect phones running the OS to start showing up on other carriers very soon.

Breath-taking Off-contract prices for HTC Mozart and LG Optimus 7Q on Telstra revealed

telstraprices

The official twitter account for Telstra has revealed the off-contract prices of the LG Optimus 7Q and the HTC Mozart.

The Mozart will run at 864 Aus$ and the keyboarded LG Optimus 7Q (also LG Quantum) will be a blistering 960 Australian dollars.

In case anyone thought Australian dollars were near worthless, the exchange rate is about 0.97 US$ to one Australian dollar, making the currencies virtually identical and both handsets pretty expensive off contract.

Telstra promoting HTC Mozart, LG Optimus 7 in giant window Display

windows-phone-7-telstra-windows-phone-7-telstra-tip-lg-htc-engadget-engadget

So it starts.  We know Australia and New Zealand are always a bit ahead of the world, and on this occasion  they were also the first to start promoting Windows Phone 7 handsets, in this case the HTC Mozart, leaked first for Telstra many months ago, and what appears to be the LG Optimus 7 in a gigantic window display, inviting users to come in and try it themselves.

Hopefully this means also we will see live handsets in stores.

Telstra demoes their Telstra One Windows Phone 7 app

Telstra is rightfully proud of their Windows Phone 7 app, and in the above video they demonstrate the application again, emphasising how the software follows the look and feel of Windows phone 7 itself while still being very functional.

Hopefully we will see similar quality applications from carriers which we are happy to have and use, rather than wishing to immediately remove using a custom ROM.
