Tap and Hold–the secret key to the Windows phone 7 castle
Windows Phone 7 prides itself on its sleek user interface, but this often means menus are pared down to the minimum, and the many features are hidden in tap and hold menus.
The above video by Pocketnow.com shows a few of the hidden menus, and they listed these 25 more below.
1. Keyboard (punctuation, foreign letters, etc)
2. Picture hub background
3. Move tiles on start screen

I can add a few more myself, which I have discovered over the last week.
Tapping album art will let you favourite or un-favourite a song, and set a playlist or shuffle and repeat.
Tapping and holding on the same album art will let you see more about the album in Marketplace.
Tapping and holding on a pdf in the Adobe Reader file list will let you delete PDFs.
I am sure there are many more. If our readers notice any particularly interesting ones please let us know in the comments.

Tips and tricks for Samsung Windows Phone 7 users
CareAce.net have published a collection of 18 tips and tricks for Windows phone 7 users, but many of which likely apply to all Windows phone 7 handsets.
Below is a few I found particularly interesting.
- Enable traffic information on Bing Maps: When inside the maps application, touch the three periods in the lower right hand corner of your screen and then select “show traffic” to enable colored patterns on local roads and freeways showing the speed of traffic in your area.
- How to see Facebook status updates about yourself: When in the People application, just touch your profile picture at the top of your contacts list and it will load your current status and other events that concern/include/reference you.
- How to enable the “Find my phone” feature of WP7: From your home screen scroll to the right and select “Settings”. Scroll to the bottom of the “System” category and select “find my phone”. In this menu you can set your phone to record your location automatically and how frequently it should do this. From there you can now remotely map, ring, lock, or erase your phone from windowsphone.live.com on any browser! This option does wear down your battery faster so keep that in mind.
- How to allow your camera button to wake up your phone for instant photo taking: From your home screen scroll to the right and select “Settings”. Now scroll to the right to find the “applications” category. In here select “pictures + camera”. The top option, if turned on, will allow you to hold down your camera button to wake up your phone and launch directly into the camera app to capture that split second event you might have missed if you had to unlock the phone first!
- How to delete your Bing Map history: From your home screen scroll to the right and select “Settings”. Then scroll right again to the “applications” category. From there select “maps”. In this menu you can delete your maps history which includes: map searches, pins, and image data.
- How to enable Wide Dynamic Range when taking photographs: After launching your camera application select the gear circle in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Scroll down to the Wide Dynamic Range option and select the on setting. Wide Dynamic Range is useful when you have different light intensities between the foreground and background. So if you’re in a dark house taking a picture of someone standing near a window with sunlight outside, turning on this feature will allow for the clearest picture possible.
- How to force resume the downloading of a game when it claims an error has occurred: Open your Marketplace tile and then select games. From here find the game that is currently having the issue and then select it. You can now select the “check install” button. Once in the marketplace downloads screen just long press on the error next to the game icon and select “try again”.

Windows Phone 7 keyboard tips
![]()
Having finally got a Windows Phone 7 device in hand and played with it for a while, I can confirm the Windows Phone 7 keyboard is indeed extremely responsive and a joy to use.
When one has been used to the HTC Keyboard, which overlays special keys with the regular QWERTY keys it can be a bit difficult sometimes to find the special letters.
The secret, according to Paul Thurrott, is tap and hold.
Tap and hold on many keys reveal many alternate keys.
Holding on the:
.com button pops up .com, .org, .edu and .net keys.
Shift. Utilize Caps Lock mode.
Period (.). A pop-up menu appears with the choices /, :, “, &, +, ., and -.
Dollar sign ($). A pop-up menu appears with the choices for other currency types.
Percent (%). A pop-up menu appears with an alternate percent format.
Left parenthesis (“(“). A pop-up menu appears with the choices <, {, [, and (.
Right parenthesis (")"). A pop-up menu appears with the choices >, }, ], and ).
Even tapping on the letters produce a variety of accent letters, e.g A would produce á, ä, Å and a variety of other variations.
So if you are stuck looking for a special letter simply tap and hold on the closest looking one and the solution may just pop up.
Massive collection of Windows Phone 7 tips and tricks
Pocket-lint have amassed a huge collection of Windows Phone 7 tips and tricks to help to help new users settle in to using Windows Phone 7.
Some of the best are:
6. Uninstalling apps
You’ve tried it and you don’t like it. No problem. Head over to the menu list and press down on the app in question until you get the contextual menu. Select uninstall and you’re done.
7. Rating and reviewing apps
You really love the new app you’ve downloaded, so much so that you want to rate and review it so anyone else interested knows whether it’s any good or not. With Windows Phone 7 you don’t have to wait until you delete it to rate it, you can rate and review it at any time. Press and hold down on the app in question until that contextual menu appears and then choose "Rate and review". It will bring up another page allowing you to have your say and give it a rating out of five. Easy peasy.
11. Hold to get secondary menus
While the three dots will get you to the same thing holding down your finger for longer than a second normally brings you the menu too. Try it in photos to see what we mean.
12. Turning off the key press sound
Click, click, click, click. Yep it’s annoying isn’t it? Great thing is you can turn off the noise Windows Phone 7 makes when you tap on your keyboard in the ringtones and sounds area within settings.
13. Setting an email tone
want to know when you’ve received an email? Probably not, but if you do Windows Phone 7 lets you set a dedicated sound so you know when "You’ve got mail". Settings, Ringtones & tones, and choose sound.
18. Enabling Google apps email
If you or your company use a Google Apps account you will have to enable Mobile mail for the system to work. Log in to your Google Apps dashboard, go to Service settings, choose Mobile and make sure "Enable Google Sync" is ticked. Once that’s done it should work like a charm.
22.Turning location off to save battery
Location services are great, but they will eat your battery. If you aren’t fussed about geotagging your photos, finding out where you are on Bing maps, or generally letting your phone know where you are, nip into the Location option in Settings and slide that toggle to the left. No more Big Brother for you.
28. Turning on the "Find my Phone" function
Windows Phone 7 comes with some really natty features, one of them being the "Find my Phone" feature that lets you find your phone again if you’ve lost it or had it stolen. Trouble is, it’s not on as default so you’ve got to do that yourself if you want to take advantage of the feature. In the Settings, Find my phone page you can opt to have the phone save your location periodically for better mapping and to get results faster.
35. Turning off mobile browsing
There are plenty of sites on the Internet that have a mobile version of their website so you can browse quicker when you are out and about on a slow connection. Trouble is sometimes you don’t want the mobile site you want the desktop site. Go to Settings, Applications, Internet Explorer and you can change how you want your Windows Phone 7 browser to act when it goes to a webpage.
51. cc and bcc people in emails
Go into an email, press on the three dots and then select "Show cc & bcc", you can now email your mates without your other mates seeing
52. Forwarding an email
It sounds silly right, but it caught us out first time so we suspect it will catch you out too. Forwarding an email is actually found in the icon with a small envelope and an arrow that looks like you are replying at the bottom of the screen when you are reading the email you want to forward.
59. Disable caller ID
Windows Phone 7 allows you to show your number to everyone as default, but if you don’t like the sound of that you can turn that feature off to anyone not in your contacts, or to everyone regardless. Go into Settings, swipe to Applications, choose Phone and then set the "Show myCaller ID to" to the setting you want; Everyone, no one, and my contacts.
65. Shuffle tracks on an album
This one is hidden within the player. Tap on the album cover and it reveals two controls, a repeat and a shuffle icon. It’s like you’ve found a special secret.
67. Check downloads and their progress
You’re impatient we know, but at least you can check the state of your download and how its progressing. Once you’ve clicked to install the new app on your phone you can then see how its doing by clicking on the "check install" button. Watch that progress bar move, baby!
68. Importing contacts from your old phone
Put in your old SIM card, Go to People, tap and hold near the top of the screen and then select "import SIM contacts"
71. Silence the ringer when you’ve forgotten to in a meeting
If your phone starts ringing in a meeting and that’s a bad thing just press the power button. It silences the ringer dead.

10 helpful tips for new Windows phone 7 users

Now the trouble(shooting) starts...
Techradar have published a helpful collection of tips for new Windows Phone 7 users (who would be just about anyone who got one today).
They range from the obvious (e.g. not all apps rotate when you tilt the device) to the arcane (you can not save data on your phone while plugged into your desktop).
One of the tips which is sure to prevent much frustration is how to get wireless sync to work – apparently it will only kick in after your phone has been plugged in for 10 minutes. Who knew!
Read the full list in much more detail at Techradar here.
How Do You Improve Your Windows Phone?

The world of Windows Phone relies on cooked ROMs, and other things that are made possible by XDA. Now thinking abut it, when your new to the WP scene… what would you say the first think you would need to do before you start enjoying your device?
I most say the first thing I do when I get every new Windows device is:
- Flash A new ROM
- Download capable apps
- Remove startup programs
- Install custom UI’s
- Fix any problems
That is what I have done with the 5 Windows Devices I have bought, and here is the tips I can give to people.
- Buy something that is fast.
- Find the best ROM that suits your need.
- Download OMarket.
- Clear your startup programs.
Those are the 4 things I would think are important if your getting something new. But before you go out and buy a new HD2, don’t forget Windows Phone 7 is coming out soon. so keep that in mind.
Comment with your steps.

Quick Tip for Diamond Memory Conservation
If you text and Email a lot, and I mean a lot, like XDA Developers member intx, you may want to give this little trick a shot.
He has come up with a few simple registry edits to have all mail, including text messages and attachments saved in the internal storage of the device rather than the main memory. The registry edits are as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Settings
add “PropertyPath” value=”\Internal Storage\Messaging” datatype=”string”
You can rename Messaging to where ever you wish to store your messages.
After making the edit, clean out your Windows/Messaging folder and soft reset, if done correctly you should have all your messages now stored in Internal Storage.
HOW TO GET ATTACHMENTS TRANSFERRED AS WELL:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Settings
add “AttachPath” value=”\Internal Storage\Messaging\Attachments” datatype=”string”
Warning: Be sure to make a backup of all necessary files before editing the registry on your device.
It looks pretty simple to apply and intx also states that he will be posting a .CAB file soon for those of you who arent comfotable changing the registry on your Diamond. So if you own an HTC Diamond and your memory is all tied up, head here for a solution.
