Official WP7 twitter app gets another update, changes still a msytery
The official Windows Phone 7 Twitter app has never been the jewel in the WP7 app crown, but at least these days it seems Microsoft is doing something about it.
The app has just had another update, its second this week, but the changelog however remains far from transparent.
Last time the app added Mango support with fast app switching, and also added additional picture sharing services.
The app has now moved from version 1.2 to 1.3, but the changes are now even less obvious, but presumably fixes some of the bugs users have been complaining about in the reviews.
The updated app can be found in Marketplace here.

Twitter updated to Mango, brings no new features
It seems the twitter app has been re-compiled with the Mango SDK, taking it from version 1.13944.31667 to version 1.14329.14900.
As the small change in build numbers would suggest, it seems no real new features were added, which is a shame, meaning twitter will remain the most neglected of Microsoft’s first-party apps.
The slightly updated twitter, which now benefits from silky smooth scrolling and fast app switching, van be found in Marketplace here.
Major update to Peregrine Mango Twitter client

Live-tile support:
The free Peregrine twitter client just received a major update, setting it apart among free and even paid twitter clients. The app was already selected a “Top 5 app” by AppStoreHQ a few weeks ago, and this update makes it even better.
Since v1.0 Peregrine has been a Mango app, getting superior scroll performance, and using compressed web requests (something not possible prior to Mango) to load data much faster – especially over a slow connection. The latest release adds features such as:
- Live Tile : Shows number of unread tweets, mentions and messages.
- Background checks : Can check for new tweets, mentions and messages while the app is not running. This is all configurable, and disables when battery saver mode is on, or you can choose to only check when not on a data connection to save on your data plan. Some twitter apps uses push notification instead, but this requires a server which usually moves the app into the paid category.
- Notifications : Notifies you if a there are new mentions, messages or tweets (all configurable) while the app is not running.
- Auto-completion of usernames: A feature missing in a lot of Windows Phone twitter clients, which helps you to spell that username just right when tweeting.

New Twitter contact problem with Mango

WPCentral reports that there may be a new problem with Twitter contract integration in Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.
It seems twitter contacts are not showing up in the People hub, irrespective of the filter setting. Handsets running the RTM build of Mango does not seem to be affected. No solution has popped up so far, but a work-around appears to be to remove the twitter account, reboot and add it back again.

SkyDrive needs to work better with twitter

BeingManan has an interesting editorial on the improvements SkyDrive need to make to make it an acceptable photo sharing service for Windows Phone 7.
Both are pretty obvious, and I hope the SkyDrive team are already working on addressing the issues.
The first is that the URL for specific photos are just much too long, e.g.
Just the URL itself is nearly 120 characters long. There is no reason this long URL needs to be exposed to the end user, and it should not be a complex problem to fix.
The second is getting Twitter to integrate SkyDrive links in the same way it does twitpic or yfrog links ie show the pictures inline on the website, so users will not necessarily need to click through to see the images. That is obviously more a business than technical issue, but as far as we know Microsoft and Twitter have at least a reasonable relationship, unlike Twitter and Google for example.
To these two reasonable requests I would like to add providing a folder just for twitter sharing from which one cant browse to the rest of one’s photos. Not everyone want to mix together all their social networks.
Lastly some customization of the landing page would be a pretty cool feature that would differentiate it from the other photo sharing services around.
Manan notes that with Picasa now being the photo sharing service for Google plus, and Apple having its own iCloud service, it behoves Microsoft to also step up and make SkyDrive live up to its potential.

Phone Social + will read your twitter time line for you, so you wont have to
Blogging in the second decade of the 21st century means keeping a close eye on twitter, but that can get a bit tedious, not to mention distracting.
Phone Social+ is the coolest solution to this problem ever, with the ability to actually read out your whole twitter time line, in a not unpleasant female robotic voice which seamlessly handles tweets in different languages. The above video, which bizarrely does not do demonstrate this, does not do the app justice.
Unfortunately at the moment only the free “lite” version is available which will only read a maximum of 50 tweets in your time line per day, but a full version is coming with even more features, including
- Integration with other social networks, like facebook, linkedin, etc
- More twitter sources, like favorites, etc.
- Voice-to-tweet
- Audio response
- Embeded browsing
- Image viewer
My main suggestion to developers is to let the app auto-update the timeline every 5 minutes and then read the latest tweets, making it the perfect companion for a long day of blogging.
The Lite version can be downloaded from Marketplace here.

Twitter picture sharing in WP7 Mango to pose privacy risk?
The built-in twitter integration in Windows Phone 7 Mango is great, but there is one angle which might come back to bite you.
When sharing a picture using the built-in client the picture is stored on SkyDrive and a link to your “Twitter Uploads” gallery on the service is sent out.
Once there you can usually see a user’s real name, and then also browse the rest of his public folder.
While both of these in and off themselves are not surprising, if you are using twitter anonymously it is a gotcha that you should be aware of, and a check of your privacy settings on SkyDrive may be in order before you send that first tweeted picture .
WP7 Mango beta: Twitter contacts not showing up in People Hub? That might need a hard reset!
Of course the first thing I did when I got twitter to work in Windows Phone 7 Mango Beta 7712 was to try and link it with my contacts. To my surprise I was unable to do this, but thought this may just be by design.
It turns out in fact this is a bug, which occurs when upgrading from bate 7601 to 7712, and it seems the only cure is either a hard reset or reverting back to NoDo using your saved back-up (you do have that, don’t you?) and then upgrading directly back to 7712.
Neither sounds terribly appealing, as in both cases data will be lost, including text messages.
The last choice is of course just to wait for the official update (although you will still have to revert to your NoDo back-up in the end).

Twitter integration in Windows Phone 7 Mango demoed (video)
Winrumors have uploaded this video demonstrating the twitter integration in the latest beta of Windows Phone 7 Mango.
While the integration is pretty wide spread, including in the browser and picture hub, one disappointing element is that it does not integrate with messaging, meaning you can not send or receive Direct Messages, making the integration and incomplete replacement for a proper twitter client.

Seesmic Twitter users need to re-authenticate

Due to changes in how twitter deals with direct messages Seesmic has announced that users have to repeat the OAuth process, initially by downloading the latest update of the software.
The update is to accommodate the changes in Twitter’s permission levels to access Direct Messages, recently introduced by twitter to allow users to send direct messages to Authenticated Accounts without following the other user, and also the changes to the authentication process.
Seesmic made the news recently for dropping support for RIM’s Blackberry OS, saying they wishes to concentrate on more popular platforms like iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7.
See Seesmic’s blog post here for full instructions.
You love your Tweeps and you love showing it by tossing a #FollowFriday or a #CoolTweeps hashtag their way. But Twitter sure doesn’t make it easy to figure out who the most deserving Tweeps are! And scrolling through your timeline trying to figure out who you’ve interacted with lately can be a time consuming pain for a social butterfly like yourself.
