Vodafone pulls unlimited data packages, ads overages charges
Its seems Vodafone is feeling the iPhone data squeeze, and instead of penalizing those notorious data hogs they are robbing Peter to pay Paul by adding overages charges to the supposedly “unlimited” data packages available to everyone else.
According to information posted on the official Vodafone eForum from June 1st the “unlimited” plan would no longer have a soft cap of 500 MB, but will instead revert to a hard cap of 500 MB, with each additional 500 MB costing and extra £5. This contrasts with T-Mobile offering 3 GB data for free.
As mentioned earlier, the changes are there to “make it fairer for everyone, and to protect our network from data abuse” but it will only affect users like Vodafone HTC HD2 owners, instead of real data hogs such as the iPhone, well known for their streaming and browsing habits bringing networks down all around the world. So much for fairer.

The ROM is now available for download from HTC here and will of course wipe your device, so an appropriate backup of your data is essential.

New Vodafone HTC HD2 ROM released
Vodafone UK is no longer selling the HTC HD2, but fortunately they have continued to support it, releasing their second ROM update now.
The new ROM, an unusual version 1.72, released yesterday, apparently brings unspecified “efficiency improvements”.
For those who prefer to preserve their warranty and only use official ROMs, the download is available here.
KIN to be exclusive to Vodafone in Europe, no KIN for Asia
Lena Goh, a spokeswoman for Microsoft in Singapore told PCWorld Microsoft has no plans to bring its newly announced Kin handsets to Asia, despite the large size and relative sophistication of Asian cell-phone markets.
Microsoft is not holding talks with Asian operators to offer the Kin, she said, noting that distribution agreements signed with Verizon Wireless and Vodafone were exclusive.
While Kin is slated to be released in the U.S. and Europe, Microsoft is focusing its Asian mobile efforts on the upcoming release of Windows Phone 7, Goh said.
Vodafone will be carrying the KIN the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Spain by Fall later this year.
“Mobile social networking is increasingly having strong appeal for our customers,” said Patrick Chomet, group director of terminals at Vodafone. “KIN has a unique and intuitive way of engaging with the user, enabling them easily to share experiences and stay in touch with their friends.”
Vodafone has not revealed exact delivery dates or price information.

SE Xperia X2 finally shows up on Vodafone… in Spain
![]()
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 has had an extremely rocky road to the market, especially on the Vodafone network, where in UK the device has been completely cancelled, despite being exclusive to the network.
It seems this has not stopped Vodafone, which is a global network, launching the device in other countries.
The Xperia X2 has just been launched on Vodafone Spain, and will be available to purchase from Monday next week.
The smartphone will run at EUR 700 without contract but will also be available cheaper on an 18 month contract.
According to Magnus Ahlqvist, general director of Sony Ericsson Iberia, the 8 megapixel handset will remain exclusive to Vodafone for 3 more months following the launch.
Confirmed – Xperia X2 officially dropped by Vodafone
We have now received an official confirmation from a Sony Ericsson spokesperson that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.
The statement reads as follows:
Sony Ericsson can confirm that the X2 will not be released by Vodafone in the UK. The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing and the product, which was exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, no longer fits within their planned portfolio. The handset is available in other Sony Ericsson markets however. Sony Ericsson is disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK but in 2010 the company will be offering a number of innovative, stand-out products in the market.
While most of our readers will not miss the device, it is of note that at present there is no Windows Mobile phone with an 8 megapixel camera, and that the Xperia X2 corrected most of the deficiencies of the X1, meaning its loss will leave somewhat of a hole in the whole Windows Mobile ecosystem.
Given Sony Ericsson’s history with the X1 and X2, would our readers trust them with another handset? Let us know below.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 dropped by Vodafone
We have been able to confirm that the much delayed Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.
In an e-mail circulated internally yesterday, staff were told the handset will no longer be sold by the carrier.
This move is likely to be a nail in the coffin for the troubled handset, which has seen an ever lengthening route to market, and we will likely see any already manufactured stock being sold off by small dealers, as we have seen yesterday.
We will ping our Sony Ericsson rep for comment, but I think its relatively safe to say:
Xperia X2 – RIP 4-1-2010
Final word on HTC HD2 and Vodafone?
We have just been pinged by our HTC rep with this statement regarding the HTC HD2 and Vodafone UK:
Following its availability in November 2009, we have been extremely pleased by the strong sales and positive feedback from Vodafone about the HTC HD2. Vodafone’s strategy continues to be to provide the HD2 as part of its broad portfolio. The HD2 will continue to be available through Vodafone for consumer sales via www.vodafone.co.uk and for enterprise customers.
Looking at Vodafone’s site, the phone is certainly in their Business shop but its nowhere to be found on their consumer side, so this may not be the final word after all. I am sure many readers will however be happy that there is at least some route to ordering the phone on their favourite carrier.
Vodafone promotes the LG GM750 with Youtube video
While the LG GM750, Vodafone’s first Windows Mobile 6.5 device, has launched some time ago, we have not heard too much from it directly from the carrier.
For that reason this short promotion of the smartphone is quite welcome, with the casual presentation making the device seem pretty approachable to the mainstream. Pity about that missing 3.5 mm headphone jack then…
The handset is available for free on a £25 per month plan, which includes unlimited data, from Vodafone here.
WTH!?! Vodafone to stop selling the HTC HD2 !!
It seems a few days after I stopped waiting for the HTC HD2 with a sliding keyboard and decided to commit to the black slab, it seems Vodafone has decided to stop selling the HTC HD2.
Vodafone:
"We haven’t recalled or stopped selling it, at the moment we have simply ran out of stock. When our next batch of stock arrives, this will be used to fulfill our outstanding back orders but we won’t be taking any additional orders via Telesales."
The reason for this shocking development is not clear. Suspected reasons vary from Vodafone making way for the iPhone 3GS, HTC not being able to supply demand or the handset simply being moved from the consumer to business section and requiring a business contract.
Whatever the reason, there is likely to be thousands of disappointed current Vodafone subscribers who may be not be Vodafone subscribers for very long. I am certainly glad I got my order in on the 8th, and am expecting the handset on the 15th, but I know many others are not as lucky.
We will be pinging our HTC rep tomorrow for an official denial or confirmation.
