Sockets coming to WP7 in Mango?
At the Windows Phone developers day at Mobile World Congress Brandon Watson revealed that socket access, which would allow features such as Voice over IP and peer to peer gaming over WIFI for example, is one of the top request by developers, and that this request is likely to be answered in the next big update to Windows Phone 7, expected towards the end of this year.

References to Visual Voicemail found in Windows Phone 7 registry
![]()
David K from MobilityDigest have been rooting around the Windows Phone 7 registry using some of the developer unlocked tools released a few weeks ago.
He notes that the Windows phone 7 registry is a lot smaller and less complex than the one for Windows Mobile 6.5, but still contained some interesting references to features such as VOIP, Clamshell devices and Visual Voicemail.
Of course these could be left overs from the Windows CE registry that forms the basis of Windows Phone 7, but with the registry otherwise so optimised there is some chance these features will activated with updates soon.

Voxofon provides cheap international calls from your Windows Phone 7 handset
We know Skype has so far not jumped in on Windows phone 7 yet. To fill the game and allow cheap international calls easily without pulling out your calling card, Voxofon has released their cross-platform application for Windows phone 7 also.
The service provides international calls from 1c per minute and international text messages from 6c each, conveniently displaying the rate before the call is made. The service uses the normal cellular network to connect to Voxofon’s VOIP gateway, so does not require a high-speed data connection.

Voxofon announced (fake) VOIP for Windows Phone 7
They say you close one door, and another opens. With Skype and Nimbuzz taking a wait and see approach to Windows Phone 7, it is welcome to see a VOIP company taking a proactive approach to the OS.
Voxofon’s international calling services allow customers to call using their smartphone, computer, land line, or a cell phone. All Voxofon services are available under a single account, providing customers with the flexibility to use the service they find most convenient.
"VoIP for smartphones is a relatively new and welcome development, since mobile phone users have traditionally paid a premium for long-distance service," says Voxofon CEO Alexey Goloshubin. "The rapidly expanding demand for smartphones for both personal and business use has increased demand for cost-saving applications such as Voxofon Call Abroad."
Unfortunately a closer look at the service reveals it to be nothing much more than an automated calling card, but then, that is a start, isn’t it

Another VOIP company drops Windows Mobile
Nimbuzz, a cross platform VOIP and IM client, has joined Skype in saying goodbye to the Windows Mobile platform.
Citing their inability to deliver “a great mobile experience” due to “platform limitations”, they announced they will withdraw the application on the 1 July 2010, and will withdraw support at the end of the year.
Unlike(or just like) Skype they have expressed some interest in Windows Phone 7, but will wait till hardware actually hit the market before deciding whether they will jump aboard or not.
Of course if this does become a trend it does not speak well for Microsoft’s ability to keep Windows Mobile in the market, something which Microsoft is hopefully not seriously contemplating.

ACCESS releases cross platform VOIP service for Windows Mobile, other OS’s
ACCESS CO. today announced NetFront™ IP-Phone, a full scale VoIP solution with 3G and Wi-Fi air interfaces designed to support all three major smartphone operating systems: iPhone, Android™ and Windows Mobile®. Jointly developed by ACCESS and OAT, NetFront IP-Phone is designed for commercial use by operators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs?and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). The solution will be available from ACCESS worldwide as of June 2010.
NetFront IP-Phone, which supports air interfaces for 3G and wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) connections and major global standards, provides a standard middleware application as well as an implementation solution service. NetFront IP-Phone is able to communicate with a variety of IP telephony servers, making it possible for ISPs and MVNOs to offer high-quality VoIP services to smartphone users while substantially reducing development time and costs.
The NetFront IP-Phone interface is compliant with 3GPP?Third Generation Partnership Project?, OMA?Open Mobile Alliance? and IETF?Internet Engineering Task Force? industry standards. NetFront IP-Phone is not bundled with specific services, so ISPs and MVNOs can customize it to offer differentiated IP telephony services.
NetFront IP-Phone was developed based on a single design concept for all three major smartphone operating systems (iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile). The high quality VoIP environment was made possible thanks to two key technologies: NetFront™ IMS Client, which supports a base IMS framework, and a standard user interface developed by ACCESS that delivers a rich user experience. The IMS framework deploys eSound™, high-quality VoIP technology developed by OKI, that enables voice communication over IP networks with realistic voice tones that are far superior to conventional phone quality.
NetFront IP-Phone is designed with a flexible modular architecture, enabling providers to implement unique VoIP applications and combine VoIP services with other applications. Applications are also available as APIs, allowing operators to customize their own UI.
A VoIP trial server for NetFront IP-Phone is available for providers to evaluate the performance of the service, resulting in reduced cost and evaluation time.
"Thanks to the combination of world-class mobile software from ACCESS, high-quality audio technology from Oki Electric Industry and IMS technologies from OKI ACCESS, we have produced full scale VoIP solution for smartphones," said Tomihisa Kamada, president, CEO and co-founder of ACCESS. "We will continue to partner with OKI ACCESS and Oki Electric Industry to create new multimedia communications business opportunities."
"Since the foundation of our company, OKI ACCESS Technologies has focused on developing advanced IMS solutions that create value-added services by integrating OKI’s industry-leading information technologies and ACCESS’ mobile software technologies. We are confident that NetFront IP-Phone will contribute to the growth of mobile VoIP markets," said Osamu Nakazawa, president of OKI ACCESS Technologies.
"OKI has been driving the innovation of global information and communication technologies that enrich people’s lives. We are honored that our VoIP technology has contributed to the development of NetFront IP-Phone. We will continue to pursue our vision of developing advanced technologies that promote the ubiquitous society," said Hidetoshi Saigou, executive officer and general manager of Telecom Systems Business Division at OKI.
ACCESS and OKI ACCESS Technologies plan to launch future versions of NetFront IP-Phone to support additional platforms for smartphones and connected home appliances.

The curse on no native development? Skype drops Windows Phone 7 also

Skype's Dan Neary - No Skype for Windows Phone 7
Speaking an event in Sydney Dan Neary Asia Pacific Vice President for Skype told Australian Smarthouse.com that they will not be developing a VOIP client for Windows Phone 7. The company will be concentrating instead on iPhone, Symbian and Android, with new offerings currently in development.
The company did not explain their decision, but two possibilities exist – either lack of confidence in the market performance of the operating system, or alternatively difficulties in development due to lack of the ability to use native code on the platform, with developers tied to Silverlight and XNA. Issues such as lack of multi-tasking may also affect the utility of VOIP software.

WVGA VoIP software with earpiece, HTC favorites import, dtmf support
Staying in contact with family can always be a hard task, but this guy moded this application to perfect it. The application called SipekMobile was once very crappy, but once XDA member drizztje got his hands on it, lets just saying it works now.
Details:
Hi There,
I have been busy with the SipekMobile. I got the source code, and re-worked a bit. I fixed some bugs, added importing favorites from Sense people tab, corrected the graphics for WVGA, added DTMF support and contact picture display. It also works over 3G and call quality looks good. Don’t expect a fancy UI, but it does the job.
Here is the cab as promised.
Most of the credit goes to SipekMobile and PJSip developers.
Version 2:
- Proximity sensor support (thanks to exidler, the thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=631101)
- Prevent standby during call
- Establishing an internet connection automatically at startup if not availableBugs:
- When less than 12 contacts are set in Sense people tab, program crashes. Version 2 could solve this, to be tested.
Lies, damn lies and Skype – Skype Beta for Android pulled too
Skype has recently claimed they have withdrawn their Windows Mobile software as they “want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience”. In our comment they claimed: “It’s been very difficult for us to make the experience consistent across a wide range of Windows devices.”
The news that Skype Beta has also disappeared from the Android Market makes the above excuses ring pretty hollow, and the news that Skype intends to continue delivering their software on Windows Mobile and other platforms if they have deals with carriers such as on China Unicom and Verizon reveals the truth rather clearly.
It appears Skype has given up on trying to be an end-run around the carriers, and will now focus on making individual deals to drive the uptake of carrier data plans by end users. These users will find Skype customized and locked to their handsets, only working when they have an expensive data plan. Users on carriers without these deals will find themselves denied the ability to use Skype on their phones, data plan or not.
In effect Skype has sold out their user base to the highest bidder, and has not even had the shame to be honest about it.
Funny how greed and lies often go together.
Skype for Windows Mobile disappears!!
We just had a tip from wmphone.de, letting us know of a shocking mystery.
It appears Skype for Windows Mobile has disappeared from their website, and is no longer available for download. Their website merely claims “Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile are no longer available.”
Their support FAQ claims:
Why can’t I download Skype Lite or Skype for Windows Mobile?
Unfortunately, Skype Lite – a version of Skype for your mobile phone – and Skype for Windows Mobile are no longer available for download from our site.
We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones. Our focus is on providing a rich user experience that allows you to enjoy free Skype-to-Skype and low cost calls as easily on the move as you do at your desktop.
We felt that Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile were not offering the best possible Skype experience.
Can I still use Skype Lite if I already have it?
Yes. People who have already installed Skype Lite can continue to use it throughout 2010.Can I still use Skype for Windows Mobile if I already have it?
Yes. People who have already installed Skype for Windows Mobile can of course continue to use it.
The above explanation is rather bizarre, and of course does not explain much at all.
At the moment Skype for Windows Mobile can still be downloaded here, but who knows how long this page, which is not liked to anywhere anymore, will remain up.
Do any of our readers have more information on this mystery? Let us know below.
