Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade coming…. eventually
Sprint has let it be known in their forums that they and HTC are working on an official Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2.

Windows Mobile 6.5 Planned for HTC Touch Pro2 from Sprint
Sprint and HTC are currently developing a release of Windows Mobile 6.5 for the HTC Touch Pro2 that is expected to be available to customers by end of first quarter, 2010. This upgrade will not only provide updates to the Windows Mobile platform, but also significant enhancements to the Touch Pro2 user interface which will allow additional customization/personalization options and more integration with the applications users access most.
Of course most people who really wanted it are probably running a hacked ROM by now, but if you want to be sure about preserving your warranty official is the only way to go, so this development is certainly long overdue good news.
Does anyone expect anything unusual about the upgrade, like Windows Mobile 6.5.3 for example? Let us know below.

Windows Mobile web use grows 50% in one month, WM 6.5 a quiet success?
We have often seen Net Application’s Market Share analysis used to condemn Windows Mobile, but this month at least the company, that generates its numbers from analysing traffic to thousands of websites, has good news for Windows Mobile fans.
Web site use for Windows Mobile has apparently seen a sharp upward spike in December, rising from 0.04 to 0.06% of all web traffic measured, constituting a 50% increase in usage over the festive season.
Of course Net Applications can not explain the increase, but 2 obvious reasons come to mind. One is that Windows Mobile 6.5 may have had more of an impact than analysts give it credit for, making Windows Mobile-based devices more consumer friendly and inviting to use.
The next would place the full responsibility for the spike on one device only – the HTC HD2, which certainly has a very good web browsing experience due to its capacitive screen and fast Snapdragon processor.
The month on month increase is the second greatest percentage-wise for the mobile OS’s broken out by Net Applications:
|
November 2009 |
December 2009 |
Growth |
|
| iPhone | 0.36% | 0.44% | 22% |
| Symbian | 0.19% | 0.23% | 21% |
| iPod Touch | 0.07% | 0.09% | 29% |
| Windows Mobile | 0.04% | 0.06% | 50% |
| Android | 0.03% | 0.05% | 66% |
| Blackberry | 0.03% | 0.03% | 0% |
| Palm | 0.01% | 0.01% | 0% |
Such growth is certainly unusual for a mature product, as can be seen by the percentages of other established devices such as the iPhone, Symbian and RIM, but often does signify either the release of an new version of an OS or hit device, both of which occurred recently for Windows Mobile.
Palm would however be disappointed, with the company not only not showing any month on month growth in the festive season, but no significant growth across the whole year either, starting and ending the year on 0.01% despite the much hyped Pre and Pixi.

Great things of 2009 No. 5 – Windows Mobile 6.5
![]()
Windows Mobile 6.5 was far from the Windows Mobile 7 we were expecting in 2008, but the late arrival of this OS update brought a much needed veneer to Windows Mobile which served to make the smartphone OS more palatable to both consumers and OEMs. Of course opinions are divided on each particular feature the software brought, but devices such as the HTC HD2 would be poorer for not having the actual native start menu and lock screen for example.
Windows Mobile 6.5 brought much more than just UI improvements. It also brought a new kernel with new memory management techniques which should allow software developers to make much better use of the massive memory Windows Mobile smartphones now ship with, and of course usual advances such as longer battery life and better stability.
In 2010 we can expect further iterations to Windows Mobile 6.5 which will make the OS much more suitable for capacitive screens, and also more improvements in the bundled apps and also an increased rate of releases by Microsoft, culminating in the release of Windows Mobile 7 later in the year.
Do any of our readers feel Windows Mobile 6.5 is a real advance over Windows Mobile 6.1? Let us know below.
Samsung Epix to get Windows Mobile 6.5 update in February 2010
The original Samsung Omnia is still not on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 updated list, but it appears Epix owners are a bit luckier, with the device apparently set to get the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade in February 2010.
The update is likely a combination of serving business users and a desire to continue selling the current device.

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 officially acknowledged for the first time
The latest builds of Windows Mobile 6.5 live in some strange limbo, where we all know Microsoft is developing the software, but Microsoft has never officially admits to its existence.
Its seems with the launch of newer versions of Windows Mobile 6.5 creeping up that is changing, with this first official mention of the new OS build in MSDN documentation, mentioning the changes to the soft keys and how it affects widgets development.
Hopefully this is some indication that we will hear a lot more pretty soon about the latest developments of our favourite OS, and actually in the open rather than through XDA-Dev.

HP Glisten hardware tour
MobilitySite has unboxed the HP Glisten and given the device a brief hardware tour. The Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional smartphone with its front-facing keyboard appears to compare pretty well with its other front-facing competition and has a cool, professional look which should see it fit in pretty well in a suite pocket.
We look forward to seeing more on this device soon.
