Zune for Windows Mobile confirmed in job posting
Reading the tea leaves for Windows Mobile has become easier now hordes of people are combing through Microsoft’s job offers. The latest news is a job for a Software Testing engineer who fits the job description below:
“Do you want to create one of the most exciting new consumer service from Microsoft? Interested in leading a team from the ground up, working from prototype stage to shipping an experience on millions of devices? Do you dream about having a mobile phone based entertainment experience powered by a unified entertainment service across devices such as Zune, Xbox and PC? If yes, come join the Zune team!
The Zune team is embarking on the mission to create a “Connected Entertainment” experience, realized through the Zune service, that spans multiple devices such as Zune, Xbox, PC and Mobile phones. We are a rapidly growing, V1 product team with great opportunities for motivated individuals who can hit the ground running!”
While a Zune services which reaches over to Windows Mobile is good news, its worrying that the job offer makes so many reference to this project being in a very early stage. With Windows Mobile 7 coming in less than a year, should the service really still be working “from the ground up“?
Either way, further confirmation can only be good news. Read the Job description on the Microsoft website here.

Skyline, Skymarket and SkyBox – MS takes on MobileMe, BES
Taking the lead from Mr Zheng from istartedsomething.com, I have taken a good look around Microsoft’s job postings, and have revealed a whole raft of projects by Microsoft to retake the mobile initiative from RIM and Apple.
From reading about 20 job postings, it seems Skyline is a business focused service which will integrate Microsoft-hosted Exchange-like services to consumers and small businesses. This will be Microsoft’s attempt to directly gain subscription revenue from mobile consumers, much like RIM thrives on subscription revenue from their 15 million captive users. It will also integrate other MobileMe-like value added services and leverage existing Microsoft properties like Hotmail and surrounding services.
Integral that that is Skybox, which is server-based technology, definitely all about the cloud, and from the name I can only assume involved online storage.
Of course, after istartedsomething.com’s scoop, we now know Skymarket is an online market place modeled on the App store from the iPhone.
Now such an initiative may seem like it would take years to get to fruition, but the team dedicated to developing the services are using agile development methods and plan to go from conception to delivery in less than 12 months.
What seems to be missing from this bundle is any services based on entertainment and media, but hopefully the promised Zune/Windows Mobile integration will take care of that.
As usual, it seems all it takes is some good competition to stir the giant. I look forward to see where all these great initiatives are going.
Skymarket – Windows Mobile app store coming “this fall”
Long Zheng from the istartedsomething blog has been reading the tea leaves (or rather the Microsoft’s job postings) and have uncovered a plan to launch a Windows Mobile application store seemingly modeled after the Apply Appstore, with Microsoft acting as an aggregator and middle man, collecting fees from consumers and disbursing it to developers. The app store is meant for Windows Mobile 7, and the software is now very close to launch.

Windows Mobile 7 devices in Q1 2009 says HTC
At the HTC Touch Diamond launch in South Africa PhoneReport journos managed to corner Kevin Chen, General Manager of HTC for MEA and CIS. Besides selling the features of the HTC Touch Diamond, Kevin also let slip that he expected to announce Windows Mobile 7 devices in Q1 2009. This should be encouraging news to Windows Mobile fans who were waiting for HTC’s TouchFlo enhancements to become part of the native OS, as has been promised by the leaked screenshots of Windows Mobile 7 several months ago.
