TechCrunch declares WP7 has 30,000 apps. Aren’t they a bit early?

In a relatively positive story TechCruch has just announced the Windows phone 7 marketplace has crossed the 30,000 apps mark. While this is great and all, and is certain to be widely propagated (good for Windows Phone) by the count of the websites we tend to use (like WP7Applist) the tally is still about 900 apps short.

TechCrunch did not reveal the source of their information, and may know something we don’t, but I am going to hold off celebrating for at least another few days.

Simple -
a) it is a significant milestone. I was certainly going to write an article when WP7 crossed the 30,000 mark
b) At the moment all we have is TechCrunch saying so, hence the provisos.

Or don’t you think WP7 crossing the 30,000 mark is newsworthy? That’s about as many apps as Windows Mobile had after 10 years in the market.

Yeah, but the WP7 market seems to be the absolute worst in terms of ‘app pollution’ as measured in terms of ‘signal to noise’. I have a dreadful time finding anything … like the new GlassBoard app I can see in my Zune desktop but can’t find on the Marketplace …

I think they took the number from the recent Windows Phone team blogpost by Todd Brix on mango apps submission process he mentioned that marketplace has nearly 30,000 Windows phone apps..

thats quite an accomplishment although lately its been very slow with new apps…I hope because most devs are working on Mango apps.

does WPApplist take in to consideration the NON-US market? there is a lot of apps that don’t show up in the US market so the extra 900 could easily be from the foreign WP7 marketplaces

Actually depending on how you look at it, the Marketplace only has around 24,500 (as of today). The issue with WP7AppList is that those numbers include apps that are no longer active (ie you can’t downloaded them!). Our App AppTastic shows only those apps which are able to be downloaded which we think is a better representation of how many Apps are in the Marketplace at any one time. So depending on how you look at it, we’re actually some way off the 30,000 milestone.
