Tegra-powered Zune phone to be announced at Mobile World Congress?

Spanish blog myucomputer.com claims to have first hand knowledge that confirms that Microsoft will be announcing a Zune-themed phone at Mobile World Congress, powered by the same Tegra chipset as found in the ZuneHD.

Like the ZuneHD the device will also have HDMI-out capability, but retain the 480×272 screen.

They go on to speculate that the device will feature Windows Mobile 7, but this early in the day its likely to be the cut down non-multi-tasking version rumoured rather than the real release we will see towards the end of the year.

At WMPoweruser.com we find the rumour believable, and will make sure we are there to bring you the first pictures of the device.

if this is to be believed, then WM7 doesn't require a minimum of WVGA resolution and … and chassis 1 may also be nonsense

True or not, why wouldn't ZuneHD apps run on WM7? I don't buy into that bit about WM7 not being compatible with older versions, it's all still CE under the hood, and the ZuneHD is no different.

CE5.X and CE6.X don't have a binary compatibility. .Net CF stuff fares better than native code though.

It's not that simple. First, Zune HD and WM7 may have different CE kernels and second, even if the kernel is the same, MS may not want to let the apps run.
An as l3v5y said, current WM versions and WM7 will surely have different kernels and will be binary incompatible.

Chassis 1 I think may well be true, but I guess it would only apply to OEM hardware, not an MS device with a less functional OS.

I really question this. I think Microsoft have enough issues with their partners as it is without pissing them off more by entering the hardware business too. The only way I see this coming true is if Microsoft is releasing this as the next iteration of the sidekick platform.

That's what I think this could be, the new sidekick which will be ZuneHD like and feature the Zune marketplace front and center to the whole experience. Making the device/devices more media and social networking (twitter and facebook apps on the ZuneHD as well, or coming soon) centric and so on like those few rumors that have been going around.

These could easily slot in between dumbphones and the higher level full WM7 smartphones made by MS's partners.

Yeah if its true, it might be just an evolution of the sidekick. But why would they continue on dumbphones when the future is all smartphones? Dumbphones is a dead end thats going to be filled by those LG, Samsung, and Sanyo devices. There is no point in converting people to dumbphones.

It would still (even as a new dumbphone) have a very good media experience. I know lots of people that value the media part over the phone part, and carry an expensive Archos device and a dumbphone. Why sacrifice the media if it's important, and why carry two devices?

I see quite a market for semi-smartphones (that's the way I class the iPhone as well) as phones get more smart, people want to do more, but don't want to have to deal with all the options a really smart OS gives you (I mean, compare the WM or Android settings menu with the iPhone one, there's nothing you can change on an iPhone). That would lead to some limitation of features (like the lack of multitasking on the iPhone) but would provide an easier experience.
