TellMe Powered Speech API Coming To Windows Phone Developers

One of the most discussed feature in Windows Phone Mango is the speech capabilities built in. The ability to read and respond to SMS without touching the device simply blows the mind of people seeing the demos and video. Bukshteyn, Tellme Senior Director of Sales and Marketing recently revealed that his team is working on API for speech capabilities found in Windows Phones. With the help of the upcoming Speech API, developers can take advantage of TellMe’s advanced speech technology in their own. He also added that he has no time frame on when it will be released . However I guess it will be definitely part of next major Windows Phone SDK release. Microsoft also revealed that the same speech technologies powered by TellMe will be deeply integrated into Windows 8 as well.

Speech NUI FTW ! ! !

Somehow I don’t think the implementation will be THAT fluid and perfect, at least not so soon, but I can actually imagine within a year or two having our windows phones (or pcs) respond to more complicated phrases like “Wake me up in 2 hours” or “remind me to take out the trash tomorrow at 9 am”. And with responses like “Goodnight, I’ll wake you in 2 hours” or “I’ll remind you to take out the trash tomorrow morning”, it would make us feel like we’re actually talking to someone instead of to a machine.

    that would be so awesome…

It really seems like Microsoft can become a front runner and set themselves apart with deep voice command integration. Lets keep our fingers crossed that they will take advantage of the opportunity.

This whole TellMe presentation seem more like a “best case” or idealistic presentation than actual real-world technology they got baking in the labs. One thing I have to admit though, Microsoft, unlike any other technology company has always been on the forefront of speech synthesis technology (and there’s a reason why almost no other company has kept at it or has been very successful – it’s really hard technology to do properly). Unfortunately, they’ve never yet been able to bring any of them into real world consumer friendly products. Well, I’m hoping they can finally turn the page with TellMe. Done right and marketed brilliantly (not this type of corny ad), this can truly be a game changer.

By real world consumer friendly you mean windows xp, vista, 7 or windows mobile or ford sync or … It’s true that ms has always been in this game but never alone. TellMe has a more “modern” approach to speech recognition with features like over the net processing etc. That’s why ms bought this company. Just like apple bought nuance. And there’s sensory.inc, google voice recognition, …
I hope that this technology gets adopted by the consumers but I really wish they use it when in private or appropriate. Imagine you commuting by bus or train and everyone is talking and listening to their phone (I know this sounds like to make a phone call but you get the point) instead of just texting.
