Telstra HTC HD2 confirmed to be working on AT&T

htchd2att

If you a rearing to get a HTC HD2 on AT&T the only option right now is buying one from the other side of the world, Telstra in Australia specifically.

The Australian HTC HD2 has just launched 2 days ago, but has already found its way to USA, where an excited owner has posted about his experience on the AT&T network.  The phone does not work very well with the native Telstra ROM, but a custom ROM like Dutty’s is said to sort out most issues.

One note one should bear in mind before considering the purchase is that Telstra only shares the 850 Mhz 3G band with AT&T, meaning the phone will not be able to access 3G on the 1900 AT&T band.  Fortunately AT&T is at present expanding its 850 Mhz network as much as possibly, so this may not be much of an issue.

Guess that's still just the original WM6.5. I'd like to have seen more HD2's that are starting to come out now and in the near future shipping with 6.5.3 or 6.6, w/e the final name will be.

Tmobile is bringing the HD2 ti the US in a couple of months (+/-) , so will it work on the AT&T network if it is unlocked first?

    • Rico

It will work, but only on EDGE. i decided against buying the HD2 because it’ll be expensive to buy without contract, and either won’t get the official WM7 upgrade or likely won’t support all the features of WM7. That’s all on top of the fact that i’ll have to run it on EDGE, which really kills a lot of the appeal of the device. Telstra’s HD2 will cost even more for the privilege of running on the less popular 850MHz band. No thanks.

Frankly, i’m just going to go with either the AT&T Pure or Expo, depending on what news comes out of MWC. Whatever i get now will be a holdover for a WM7 phone for me, and i’m leaning towards the Pure simply because i can get a cheaply on eBay and save that money for a WM7 device.

Sams Club where I live has the pure for 88.00 upgrade price walmart wireless on line has it for free after rebates you can also get the tilt2 there for 99.00 after rebates.

If you don't care for the Touch Pro 2's (Tilt 2) big screen and nice keyboard, go for the Expo. It has a snapdragon processor and also has a decent keyboard. The snapdragon beats the ancient MSM7200 by a ton. The only reason I have a Tilt 2 is because it came out sooner and has a larger screen and nicer keyboard.

The HD2 meets the spec for WM7 and most recently it appeared that many are reporting it will be providied WM7 when released as a free upgrade. The reason it seems is that there might be a HD3 with even higher hardware specification to run WM7 i.e. 1GB ROM/1GB RAM, higher screen resolution, smaller (3.7") screen and a higher spec camera

For me that is ideal as the HD2 price will come down and I will still have a large screen wonder that is the HD2 running Wm7

how is this any different from any of the other GSM versions that have been available? haven't they all been able to work on AT&Ts 850 mhz band?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/peterfares peterfares

All of HTCs phones starting with the Diamond and after have only had European 3G bands (and Quadband GSM) except the phones specifically designed for carriers which do not use European 3G bands. Those 3G bands won't work in the USA. All of the phones will work on AT&T 2G because there are a total of four GSM bands.
AT&T uses the 850MHz and 1900MHz band for 3G as well as 2G. Telstra uses 850MHz for 3G. That means any phones designed for Telstra have the 850MHz 3G band and will partially work with AT&T's 3G network whereas the unlocked European ones will not. A lot of AT&T's 3G network has been moved to 850MHz though so that will make it possible to use the Telstra HD2 on a lot of AT&T's 3G network. Part of it is on 1900MHz though and the Telstra HD2 will not be able to connect to that.

So what bands will T-Mobile US's HD2 have? There's gonna be three versions of the HD2 then?

        • http://twitter.com/baymon @baymon

T-mo USA is using the new AWS spectrum, which is on the 1700 and 2100 Mhz band.

        • Peter

Yes there will be three different versions.
The Rhodium is probably the one with the most versions. There is one with European 3G, one with AT&T 3G, One with AWS 3G, a CDMA/European 3G/Quadband GSM version, and I believe there is also Telstra version with only 850MHz too.

          • Strange

I thought the Telstra Version "is" the one that works on AT&T, with 850 3G…is there another one that works with AT&T 3G?

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/pinguino1 pinguino1

        .
Last time I checked New York has 1900 3G. That's a big crowd.
I would buy a $1,000 phone to use G2 and hoping that where ever I go they have 850 3G

Com'on AT&T! you guys keep on missing the best phones every year!!
        .

    • Jeff

Yes but the ones for AT work on 850 and 1900 and the 850 3G network is being built up by ATT to carry the biog load of 3G but right now its not in as many areas as the 1900 3G is.
