The First Thing To Kill Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

The fart application dethrone of iPhone has already began for the unreleased OS, and here is the first. This application posted by MD is a preview of what we might have to die from if Microsoft does not put a stop to it. The fart application is for people that pretty much hate technology and cannot find any use for their expensive device.

I cannot say how disappointed I am to see this. I seriously thought Windows Phone 7 was going to be used for something a bit better.

I like 12 year old humor and love technology and use it for more than this type of Junk. I a world where every marketplace has way too many flash light apps and widgets that are little more than website links you have to expect this stuff and not take it so seriously.

WenWM needs to relax. Microsoft has a limit of 5 free "free apps/games" (basically any publisher can only offer 5 free apps, after that they need to pay $20 per free app they list on the Marketplace) so these applications and other low quality applications will be very few.

This does bring up another interesting point. Since MS has a limit of 5 free apps, isn't that going to skew the numbers a bit in favor of Android? Android is a free for all and as expected the vast majority of those apps suck donkey balls, but they can still claim they have 70,000 apps. So lets remember that next time we see a comparison of the # of apps on each platform, lets include a quality quotient to that comparison.

Microsoft made a conscious decision to focus on quality over quantity. Unfortunately with all things there will always be a slapstick comedy/game/app. Just won't touch it and encourage others to do the same.

Rather than banning silly apps (or any other apps), Microsoft should just rank apps in order of usefulness. Or let the public rank the apps.

Microsoft should not ban any apps. But it will, as it wants WP7 to be a very closed platform (compared to the older Windows Mobile which was more open).

Once a platform master starts banning any apps, it then begins the journey down a slippery slope.

WenWM – You honestly thought nobody would develop a "fart app" for WP7? Why? Just because you want it to be high brow? I don't get it.

Melika – How is a five free app limit per developer going to stop 100 developers from developing five "fart" apps (or equivelent)? It's not. And $20 for each additional app is not going to stop "marketplace spammers" who use those apps as advertising conduits for other ventures. On the contrary, this very blog has been bragging about how awesome ads are going to be on WP7.

Crapware will always saturate all software marketplaces. I don't see why this is a surprise to anybody. This has been happenings since the invention of TUCOWS and Download.com and it will continue long past phone market places.

I want to add that I'm not dissing WP7's marketplace. I think they are doing a lot of things right (namely, demo apps instead of buy-then-refund) which the others are not doing. But it just never made sense to me how the restrictions they are putting on the market is going to offer more quality control than Apple.

If anything, you are more likely to NOT see an app you mgiht want than to see this work as a fantastic crapware filter. Crapware makers and their email brethren, the spammers, have money. The hobby developer with a creative idea does not.

So the cost of entry to WP7 marketplace is much more likely to exclude good stuff than bad stuff.

I'd prefer a more android-like "anything goes" type of market, but that has its own problems. I just find the problems tolerable given the lower barrier to entry for hobbiests.

WM7 will have less apps because: free apps will be limited per developer, and no lite versions. Just those alone will mean the WP marketplace will not have as many as android or apple for a long long time.

Maybe we should start moving away from the concept that its only the number of applications available that count, but should focus on the quality.

A fart app it's a must have if you want that people from all ages buy the phone. Young people like to play with silly apps.

Haha. True, Fart apps are lame but a bit necessary I think. Did I just say that?…

Just be worried at the number of Apps posted over time. If there isn't a lot that will suck. It will never be 100,000 Fart Apps and 10,000 useful apps. Just hope devs embrace WP7 at all. Because if they don't, Fart apps or not, it will fail.

The best way to kill these apps is to make an open source, full featured sound effects application. Give it away for free in the WP7 Marketplace. The application should let the user make all kinds of different fart noises, so essentially it's the King of Fart applications. No one who wanted to spend a few hours of programming could beat this application. That way, there's only one fart application rather than a few hundred.
