This is the way it should be …

Microsoft and Nokia have been fighting very hard for shelf space in carrier shops for the Nokia Lumia 800.  It seems at least in the Phones4U store in Westfield Mall in Stratford, the mall close to the 2012 Olympic Village and the one featuring Nokia’s Arch, they managed to secure level placement with the iPhone 4S, which should let buyers compare the phones side by side pretty easily.

Keep up the good work Nokia!

Thanks Halil for the pictures.

      No, it’s not.

Especially so when the ad looks better than that of the iPhone.

    • http://www.segana.co.uk segana

I don’t think it is for most consumers. The average smartphone doesn’t know the ‘ins & outs’ of what either device can actually do or doesn’t do and would probably look at both based on how the phone looks, how the UI looks and navigates. Text features, Social Media features, Internet Features an Camera Features with some maybe being interested in a devices Music features and when it’s just these few things, I think the 2 devices stack up quite well against each other.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

That may be true for WP7 but Apple has spent years teaching people what they can do with an iPhone. Most ten-year-olds, at least in developed countries, could probably give you the ins and outs of what the iPhone can do.

        • http://www.segana.co.uk segana

Really? I used to work as an IT Support Analyst and although I’m a Web Designer/Developer now, I still handle all the iPhone Support requests and repairs for the company I work for. Of the 450 employees we supply iPhone’s too as company mobiles (age range in and around the 20 – 45 year olds), I’d say less than 10% actually know how to use the things. Anything more than sending/receiving texts or phonecalls, the phones are wasted on them as the don’t know how they work and don’t want to know for the most part.

I find this is a similar story in and around the area I live with regards to people I interact with.

The younger generation (I’m only 30, so not the younger generation, but still young enough to understand) are obviously up on their tech and smartphones, but they’re not the one’s with the money and recent studies have shown that the most concentrated age range for smartphone ownership is the 21 – 28 year olds and like I say, I know a lot more in that age range that don’t know how to use their iPhone than do.

These are of course just my own observations, so feel free to ignore as you wish :)

A lot of Black, im hoping it lights up somewhere on that display

    • Anonymous

The big Nokia handset actually has a screen in it. I used this booth in person. It’s great.

      • Anonymous

Well then this is amazing… i thought the screen looked a little glossy

  • http://twitter.com/big_slim750 LaMar aka Big Slim

    GREAT eye catcher! Love it!

  • Anonymous

Nice start but from across the room it looks like an extension of the iPhone display. I can’t see the words Nokia or a Windows Phone logo anywhere. The minimalist message approach on the Apple display wins in my opinion. Yes, they have the mind share already so they don’t really need to go into much detail, but the Nokia display looks messy and jumbled. The average consumer will gravitate towards the Apple display and I think thhis Nokia disply will benefit in this one store by being right next to Apple. I can’t speak to the impression it would make if it were off by isself somewhere in a corner.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s a problem of the content of the display, it’s more that it’s black in contrast with white. I think being tile style of WP7 they should have gone with a white background. I would have made it clearer.

    • Anonymous

Trust me, when I went in there, people were lining up behind the Nokia stand and those playing with the 4S were looking next to them at whoever was using the Lumia.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UWVRPJYQFEG7ZCHPD7LDPBR2CM LWSJR

That’s good news!  Hopefully, those folks walked out with, or at least pre-ordered a Lumia.  I would love to have been there – wish there was some cameraphone footage of the line that you speak of – bragging rights, you know :)

looks like apple are the good and nokia with wp7 the dark bad

The iPhone display is the winner here.  Simple and concise.  The Nokia display is cluttered and obscures the phone.  Did anyone even notice that there is an actual phone on display?

And what the hell does “be a local anywhere” mean?

    • http://twitter.com/GusGomez G4tro

I have to disagree because the reason that the Iphone display is so simple is because is an establish product…WP7 Nokia is not so they have to show more and try to grab more attention by making the display more over the top than the Iphone.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/6G3ZZJCHOLYP3S5CRCIHQ7WDSE MVIM

I disagree. The iPhone stand looks bland and boring. The Nokia display is much more colorful and eye-catching. If I was looking at those two side-by-side, I’d walk over to the Nokia display to see what all the attention-grabbing graphics and typography are about before walking over to the obvious iPhone display.

And “be a local anywhere” is a reference to Bing Local Scout. It helps you locate restaurants, entertainment, and other amenities at a neighborhood level; so you don’t have to call 411, search the yellow pages, or whatever people used to do when they traveled away from home.

    • Anonymous

I think the Lumia display epitomizes what Windows Phone is all about.  Instead of selling on the brand, it is trying to get attention by incorporating the brands consumers already use and love like Facebook and Xbox Live and Twitter.  While the approach can obviously be debated, it is what WP has to do to draw attention from people who know nothing about the WP7 brand itself.

      • http://www.geardiary.com Michael Anderson

In other words, Windows Phone and Nokia are not anything people care about, but perhaps we can TRICK you into looking by using successful brands?  What’s next … the Microsoft / Nokia ‘FREE BEER’ campaign? ;)

    • http://twitter.com/JayJayTG Jay Gilliham

To be a local is to not be lost. So “anywhere” you are even in places that are foreign to you you can still be a local with the phones features. This is done with Nokia Maps, Drive, and Bing features. So basically you are a local anywhere!

    • http://twitter.com/mrcraggle Craig Osborne

Try looking without your troll tinted glasses. You can clearly see below the “Be a Local Anywhere” text there is a map.

    • http://freddyt333.myopenid.com/ Son of Kruegerman

A “local” means somebody who lives in the place in question and is familiar with all the restaurants, bars, and attractions there. So “be a local anywhere” means that you can have all of the knowledge and know-how of the local residents wherever you go. Was it really that difficult to understand?

I think your comment demonstrates precisely what most people think about Apple product users.

      • http://munch11.myopenid.com/ 2in1

No I do agree with Adam. Nokia should use the bright pink phone for the stand design instead of the black one. Is not eye catching at all! Look at iPhone stand, with the white background, both phones stand out to the crowds.

And the slogans are so mouthful. Please…..

  • Anonymous

It is missing a huge “Nokia Windows Phone”. The stand looks a bit like a part of the iPhone shelf.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, that’s seems a bit strange, as if advertisers fear the connotation or something.  More than anything, though, what’s wrong with placing a huge NOKIA at the top?

  • Anonymous

Prime space! That’s what I’m talking about.

  • http://twitter.com/horizongraphics HorizonGWS.com

I definitely think Nokia’s branding is too busy… it doesnt really go with the clean minimal look of Metro and Windows Phone.

Also – did anyone notice the LinkedIn tile?  Are we finally getting a LinkedIn app???  :)

    • Anonymous

I don’t think there is a dedicated app, but there’s LinkedIn integration in Mango similar to the Facebook integration. You can add a LinkedIn account in the settings of the People hub.

  • http://twitter.com/DJMicMayhem DJ Mic Mayhem

This is exactly what it needs to look like they did this perfect.

To the people complaining that Microsoft and Windows phone isn’t blasted all over the backdrop you have to remember in these stores people have a negative view on all things windows, focusing on the phone and what it can do is the smart way to approach this for now.

I can’t count the times people have been amazed by my samsung focus and then they ask what type of phone it is and when I say Windows 7 they so ohh and their opinion shifts from wow it looks great to it must suck because apple or google didn’t make it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chuckwhit Chuck Whitaker

I can definitely relate to having this experience with my friends with they saw my Focus also. I actually didnt want Microsoft to even use the name “Windows Phone 7″, but instead use a fresh new moniker. Though I wish the display was a little brighter im still happy to see Nokia showing some much needed effort in the marketing…. Kinda wish Xbox Marketing division would help out, because they are doing a great job with the Xbox 360 even after all these years.

  • Anonymous

Wait…. first folk complain there isn’t enough WP marketing. We get prime marketing and we still complain? Let’s just give props to Nokia for doing what no OEM has done in marketing the heck out of our platform and stop the knickpicking please.

    • Anonymous

Exactly this!  And when I saw that Nokia has about six huge screens showcasing the Lumia 800 at Heathrow Airport in  London, I was like…Wow!

Thank you I couldnt say it any better,, people is always complaing damn, can’t please for nothing, we get all this marketing and still their not satisfied. I’m loving this and applaud Nokia for this, and I am waiting for my new Nokia WP7 device thank you….

My comments on a post the other day:

Nokia has done an OUTSTANDING job marketing this phone in this area. This picture was taken in Stratford Westfield Shopping Centre in London close to the Olympic Park where the games will be held next year. Considering it is officially Europe’s largest shopping centre Nokia has definitely put MS’ money to good use. The floor that they placed this stand on is on the same floor where all the other mobile phone shops are and has an absolutely HUGE traffic flow. Phones4U, a mobile phone and contract retailer also had a stand in store with a working Lumia 800, a massive demo screen right next to a stand with the iPhone 4S. Both times I went in the store, whoever was playing with the 4S hopped on the Nokia demo stand as soon as it was available. A truly beautiful sight and the best evidence that good marketing works!Meanwhile, a HTC branded stand right at the forefront of the store facing customers had both its screen and phone turned off. Go figure… But MS’ money is in very good hands. Trust me.

    • Anonymous

Totally agree with you regarding Nokia’s marketing efforts – if the footage of the X Factor, and the Channel 5 news wasn’t enough, well the Heathrow Airport big screen showcasing the Lumia 800 ‘Ace’d’ it!

HTC and Samsung will never be in this class!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

“Nokia has done an OUTSTANDING job marketing this phone in this area.”
To be honest with no sales data to back this up we really don’t know if they’ve done a very good job or not. About all we can  say is it looks promising.

      • Anonymous

Sometimes marketing doesn’t necessarily translate into immediate sales, but successful marketing that, whilst not Immediately boosting sales but does lead to increased Brand awareness is almost as priceless!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

Brand awareness marketing serves a differenet purpose though (think IBM or GE selling the brand on Sunday morning talking head shows in the states). This marketing is all about product, not brand, and the make or break is sales – pure and simple.

      • Anonymous

While I have been impressed by Nokia’s marketing so far here in the UK, in this particular area of direct points of sale, they have (vitally) done an outstanding marketing job and have made sure that their retail partners have done the same by ensuring demo stands and other promotional material are visible and prominent. I still say a very good job well done.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

The whole point of this kind of product marketing is to sell units. You may be impressed, but it will be hard to call the marketing successful if they don’t move the needle.

          • Anonymous

I understand, but I think we all have a general sense on what needs to be done marketing wise for WP devices to perform well at retail. Nokia phones generally carry a high brand value with European consumers which is an immediate boon for WP. Couple this with even adequate marketing and a mediocre design and they would still shift units. Your pessimism is hard to ignore in this instance. This is the best marketing effort/exposure MS has had until now, a whole year after launch. Nokia are the leading mobile phone manufacturers in the world for a reason. The needle will move.

    • http://munch11.myopenid.com/ 2in1

Wait till we count how many people actually stand and try out the phones, then we will see again.

  • http://scott.greiff.org scottag

The Apple display is clear and plain.  It promotes the products not bombarding the viewer with icons of apps (which are already available, in greater number, on the iPhone).

  • http://www.facebook.com/darren.brade Darren Brade

What sets Nokia part from the other WP7 OEMs is that it is a sole partner. Do or die.

Finally Microsoft has someone solely in their corner. Well done Nokia.

  • http://www.geardiary.com Michael Anderson

OK, so one is a clean, clearly focused advertisement that is all about a product.

The other has NOTHING to do with the product being sold, but instead tries to ape on a load of successful stuff OTHER people have done.

Yuk.  The WiMo stand is dark, poorly designed and has lousy aesthetics.  Until I saw the XBOX Live thing this could have been an ad for ANYTHING, a Mac, PC, Android, whatever …

If WP7 gains traction – which I hope it does, it will be IN SPITE of crappy marketing like this, not because of it.

Microsoft is notorious for poor advertising.  And most normal people think of Nokia as that company who made cheap phones with that famous ringtone everyone heard from ruse people in movie theaters in the 90′s.

i used  one at my local store in aberdeen   u cant test the camera out  cause  the holder blocks  it
and i couldnt find nokia maps on it  but did find  nokia drive  the 3d display  is nice in it

  • http://munch11.myopenid.com/ 2in1

By just looking at the stands, I will prefer iPhone stand. Why? It is so much cleaner and even from far, you will see that it is a stand for iPhone. Look at Nokia stands, so dark and gloomy and with all those squares. The only eye catching thing I see from the Nokia stand is the Facebook icon.

  • http://cid-280a1538334a1cb9.profile.live.com/ Seika

The black and colourful squares (especially that magenta) does looks like Nokia, one of their older advertising. While the application icons seems like the one used to be for Ovi Store advertisements.

But regardless of the iPhone’s, that colourful booth seems rather intimidative to approach. Maybe for animated video or print ads seen from afar, but for a booth to be approached…

  • Vasp

The turn of the tide, I hope.

The Nokia stand looks a bit busy but also more interesting then the iPhone stand.
