Tons of Mango issues being reported. Did some get a bad Mango?

As great as Mango is, numerous unlucky users of the update have been plagued with random issues, including excessive data usage, GPS lock failures, live tiles not updating, keyboard disappearing, and more. Some issues only apply to specific phones, while many issues are universal.

Keyboard Disappearing
We reported on this phenomenon earlier, and easily over half of our commenters (71 total comments) agreed that the issue exists, no matter what brand of phone they have. In fact, this issue even existed in the Mango Beta, and was never fixed for the final release. Users will be typing a text message, entering content into a text field, or typing a web URL, and the keyboard will randomly disappear on them. I too have had this issue.

Decreased Keyboard Accuracy
Following with the keyboard issue is the belief that the Mango keyboard is less accurate than in NoDo. In our same article, users also agreed that the accuracy feels worse than it was before. Surur and I can agree that the keyboard fails to type as well as it used to.

Live Tiles Not Updating
WPCentral reported that Live Tiles stopped updating for some Mango users last week. 6 days after that, my live tiles (Facebook and NextGen Reader) still aren’t updating on my Mango Samsung Focus. Users on XDA have also expressed concern about this issue. One XDA member actually contacted @WinPhoneSupport and asked what he should do. They told him to restore his last backup, and then reinstall the Mango update! Quite ridiculous. The problem seems to arise on any phone, irrelevant of manufacturer.

Zune Freezes while using Auxiliary Cable
This issue is specific to HTC HD7′s. While playing music through Zune, the phone will randomly freeze between songs and require a soft reset, only when listening through a plugged in auxiliary cable! Microsoft has recognized this issue already but hasn’t released a fix yet. This issue actually existed in the Mango Beta too.

Voice Command not working on Focus
This is an issue specific to me so far. On my Samsung Focus, holding the Start button doesn’t pop up the voice command menu at all. Pressing the voice icon in Bing also doesn’t bring me to the voice entry page. It is as if my Mango updated Samsung Focus completely lacks the Voice Command section of the software! Does anyone else have this issue? Tell us in the comments please! (And no, device isn’t connected via USB, or headphones, or Bluetooth, or anything funky)

Focus doesn’t turn off screen when talking on phone
Our editor KennyB123 reported this issue, and so far is the only one to experience it. On his Focus, when he puts the phone up to his ear to talk, it no longer turns off the screen. Anyone else experiencing this? One commenter just reported that his HTC Surround has this exact same bug after updating to Mango. How weird. Microsoft needs to address these bugs ASAP.

Excessive Data Use
Users on XDA have noted that Mango uses about 4 times the amount of data that NoDo used to use! That is an insane increase in data usage. Three users have acknowledged the problem, and agree that data usage has increased by about that much. They all have different phones, so the type of phone seems to be irrelevant. Two users have hypothesized that this increase is being caused by the fact that when Mango updates your main Live email account, it also synchronizes your Office Skydrive documents and OneNote, and Xbox Live. Other than the Mango update, their phones had the exact same configuration.

GPS Lock Failure
4 users of different types of Windows Phones have reported that their GPS usually fails to lock to their position, whereas it worked fine in the Mango Beta and in NoDo. Two other users posted the same thing in a different thread on XDA, confirming this issue.

Battery Not Updating
WPSauce reported today that the battery meter on the LG Optimus 7 isn’t updating correctly. Anyone else experiencing that? Check their website to find out how to replicate the issue.

Overall, these numerous random bugs are quite disappointing, since each one can negatively impact a users’ opinion of Windows Phone. Hopefully Microsoft can release fixes in a reasonable amount of time.

I have the worst of the bugs now. When I listen to my music with Zune, the music suddenly stops and my WP7 phone freezes.
    There’s nothing I can do.
I have to remove my battery. Sometimes it happens three times a day.

That’s happened to me recently too, I can’t change the song, I can’t unlock the screen. HD7

I have an LG Quantum with Mango and i have noticed a few of these bugs.

-The Indicator on Bing Maps doesnt pinpoint my location with WiFi on. It selects my old home address but as soon as i turn the WiFi off it works fine. It didn’t do that on NoDo with WiFi.

-The Live Tiles not updating properly, I’ve only experienced this with the Marketplace telling me there’s an update available but when i click on it there’s none.

-I have a Quantum so i use the QWERTY keyboard but even when typing sometimes it’ll occasionally kick me out of the typing box screen. This previously never happend in NoDo or the Beta 2.

I haven’t ran into some of the other bugs yet but these all though small annoyances should hopefully be fixed by the WP Team soon.

My HTC Surround doesn’t turn off its screen during a call anymore since I’ve gotten the Mango update. I wish that would get fixed. And I’ve had issues with less keyboard accuracy and it disappearing altogether.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1300735256 Andrew Bares

Wow, interesting to see a user with a different brand phone reporting the proximity fail bug! Microsoft needs to release a fix for these. Doing a hard reset doesn’t fix it!

What I have a problem with is the fact that I absolutely loved the browser coming from Windows Mobile. Now, I hate it. How the fuck are they going to decide we don’t need “find on page” and Forward. I use the browser so much that it erks me too much. Yesterday, it made me contemplate getting Android until my lab partner got jealous of me using my Zune Pass in that same moment. The keyboard disappearing from time to time doesn’t come close to how annoyingly backwards the browser now is.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/6G3ZZJCHOLYP3S5CRCIHQ7WDSE MVIM

Agreed. I’d even give the HTML5 support and GPU-accelerated rendering to be able to keep the old browser UI.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/6G3ZZJCHOLYP3S5CRCIHQ7WDSE MVIM

There are many more issues than the ones listed above.

The Samsung firmware update reduced the Bluetooth output volume when you’re out of a call so low that you can’t use text-to-speech or search with in-car Bluetooth because the difference between in-call and out-of-call volume is so far off.

If you have a text message open with the keyboard up in landscape mode (with the hardware buttons facing the right), then rotate the phone 180 degrees to landscape-left, the app bar pops out part way and covers the keyboard.

When you’re reading unread email from another client, the phone plays the “New email message” tone for the first email that gets read for each mail service you have on the phone. So if you receive a message you hear the new mail sound, then if you open the message on your PC the phone will play the new message sound again. It’s very annoying.

I have the surround 7 and I’m getting the Zune issue with the freezing while aux is plugged in. I also have the keyboard disappearing issue as well. Yesterday my camera wouldn’t come on. I had to turn off and on the phone to get it working. Even now the keyboard just disappeared. Yeah it’s not that stable anymore. Even sometimes scrolling is jittery.

  • Tony D

Oh I had a Bluetooth issue in the beginning. It would connect but it wouldn’t work. After disconnecting the device and reconnecting it it worked fine.

Actually I am having many problems with my mango update, here are some
1st. market is not allowing me to download and updates to any application I use and from any region of the world(phone setting).
2nd. I experienced it yesterday only when I was experiencing (stop, I forgot the term) ah yes I was experiencing HANGING of mango while playing games and listening music.
3rd. Sometimes my mobile phone does not turns off while calling somebody or listening a call.
4th. keyboard accuracy, The worst had happened after updating to mango update Type “L” but it clicks “<–"  Backspace!
5th. Off coarse, yeah the keyboard disappearing problem.
6th. Live tile update problem, It is onto my phone if it wants to or not:(
And these are someof the fewest and important problems which I am experiencing

May have noticed the keyboard dissapearing a few times with Mango and Mango beta, but not experiencing any of the other issues reported. Data is about on par with the previous six months (updated to Mango from Mango beta the day it was released), screen goes black while on a call, all my live tiles are updating fine, voice command works great, GPS is A OK, and the KB accuracy seems to be about the same. Some apps, like Board Express (even after their update) tend to lag when typing, which creates errors, but I attribute that to the app, not the OS.

BTW, I did do a hard reset just before upgrading to Mango as I wanted a fresh, clean install. You might want to try that.

My wife definitely has the Focus “screen on during call” problem. Right after Mango was released she started hanging up on people, putting people on hold, and generally screwing up all her phone calls with her face. :( She’s frustrated.

Keyboard disappears or doesn’t cap the first letter sometimes.  I’ve found that the keyboard accuracy has gone down from what I experienced in NoDo and the auto-correct is not as aggressive as it used to be.  I was surprised at how often my phone would auto-fix my typos previously but now I feel like I have to manually go in and fix it every time.

MS really needs to release a bug update for WP to quash these post-Mango issues.

‘Decreased keyboard accuracy”?  Oh no!  To me the keyboard in WP7 is the best I have used in any OS.  If this changes for the worse I’d drop WP7 from use in a minute.

At least 3 people I know of now on Orange UK with the Omnia 7 (myself included) are having HUGE data conneciton issues rendering the phone useless as a mobile data tool. If i go to an area of poor signal and lose my data connection, upon returning to a strong signal location the data connection will not re-establish. Nothing data related works at all.

Turning flight mode on-off doesn’t work. The only solution is to turn the phone on and off.

Only happened since updating to Mango.

  • http://twitter.com/counterblow the person

i dont have any of these problems (Focus) and I suggest anyone havign these problems to do a full reset of the phone and set it up from scratch.  I dont think Mango is the problem, I think Zune is for not properly updating the phones.  It allows too many NoDo settings to be carried over and wreaks havok with Mango.  Zune Desktop is the problem here folks, stock Mango is not.

Random Keyboard disappearance, very rarely, but definitely there.

Decreased Keyboard Accuracy, yeah, I thought it’s just me.

As for others :Focus doesn’t turn off screen when talking on phone
    >> Maybe his proximity sensor have an issue.

    GPS Lock Failure
    >> Mine have been improved significantly. Lock much faster. Maybe the chip have an issue?

    Excessive data usage
    >> Could it be the push system? You know, we don’t have that in NoDo.

Keyboard accuracy is actually improved for me in Mango on the Omnia 7
    No issues with keyboard disappearing.
    3G seems to be better.
    Location/ GPS is much better
    Browser speed is great

Just missing easy Internet Explorer tabs access.

I have Mango but I forced it onto my Omnia 7(T-Mobile UK) so I don’t know if my problems are related to that. No apps are showing up in my photo hub despite being there in NoDo and 3rd party live tiles seem to update at random like some will update and others wont. I’m also having a problems with the people and group tiles. The pictures seem to take a while to flip through and refresh every time I scroll to the bottom of the home screen.

  • Curt Gruber

I was eperiencing the locking issue o the HD7 when using the zune app. Turns out it wa an issue with the HTC Sound Enhancer app. After updating the app, turning off all the settings, rebooting and then re-enabling them again all is well.

  • Anonymous

None of the above issues here and I did the upgrade on 3 Samsung Focus devices. All went without a hitch. I forced 2 and 1 went through the update process as scheduled.

What about the delay of Live Messenger IMs ??? Sometimes, it needs 20 minutes for an IM to reach my phone… It’s not what I call an “INSTANT” message…

weird, i haven’t experienced any of the problems mentioned in the article…. Yeah there are certain issues with the Facebook chat here and there, but for me it’s nothing life threatening :)

  • Jeff Bramwell

I have a Focus (v1.3) and haven’t noticed any of these issues.  However, before I updated to Mango, I installed a 32GB card and did a hard reset on my phone so all the updates started fresh.  Maybe that has something to do with mine not exhibiting these problems?

  • http://twitter.com/bweaver777 bill weaver

First, Windows Phone is great and Mango is an excellent update. However, i’ve experienced some issues with my Focus since upgrading to Mango.

Live tiles not updating – i’ve experienced this with NextGen Reader, Facebook, etc. In fact, many live tiles have not updated since Mango was installed.

Momentary sluggishness – while Mango feels slightly faster overall, scrolling the home screen or in a list of items seems to momentarily “catch” or pause. Typically it’s not for more than a split second, but detracts from the smooth feel of the system.

Focus proximity sensor problems – my girlfriend and i have both experienced this problem with our screens, putting calls on hold with out faces. Fun stuff. I broke (dropped) and replaced my screen just after Mango update, and my proximity threshold was reset to 20/21 (happens to be the zero point). I recalibrated, but the sensitivity is inferior to before Mango (or before dropping the phone). Finally got it just right at about 40 (~2cm). Her phone has proxiimity issues too. Have not recalibrated yet, but expect it will help. (Need to enable Diagnostics app to get to proximity test.)

Focus battery problems – both our phones run down faster with Mango, though it’s hard to judge with the battery saver feature. After charging to 100%, my phone says 7-9 hours remaining. It will usually last maybe 10-13 hours, but sometimes it gets in a mood and will run down in 5-6, with little or no obvious usage. I’ve removed live tiles, slowed updates, etc. After reading some suggestions online, i tried removing SIM, powering up/down, restoring SIM. No effect. Another suggestion i’ve seen is to do a full reset to reset battery, but that’s not tenable for me at the moment, and anyway results are mixed. By way of comparison, pre-Mango, i was getting about 18-24 hours from a charge, with more aggressive screen and data usage.

All the features of Mango are great, but this battery drain problem makes me wonder if Battery Saver is a way to put a happy face on an unsolved engineering problem. Even with (the aptly-abbreviated) BS enabled, Mango battery life is 70% what it was pre-Mango.

Microsoft has done a great job but some of these things

Has anyone noticed that emojis are working on Windows Phone now??? I’ve

Ive had mango since it was officially released a couple of weeks ago and I just got that disappearing keyboard bug last night. Live tiles on a couple of apps have been a problem as well on my surround.none of the other bugs

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002226487882 Sasha Radic

I agree with what Jeff Bramwell said yesterday – clean up your device (and sd card) and start afresh if you are having issues, see if it gets better.

Unlocked AT&T Focus on Rogers (Canada) here – experienced no issues so far. This phone participated in Mango Beta program (via App Hub membership)
Upgraded from Beta 2 to RTM on the day of release – noticed couple of extra steps during the upgrade to clean up development bits – that could have contributed to the overall stability.

Also, Facebook live tile never worked for me, before or after the upgrade.
Maybe I will try a full reinstall of the app one of these days….

My phone has restarted by itself twice in the two days since I updated my phone. It never did this before . It also was seriously lagging and forced me to restart myself.

Hi mine problems is the sensor when i call someone got worst. Normally when I call the screen would go off but when i put it away from my face the screen would appear but this time the screen stay black. Is there anyway to fix it?

Another one to the list please… The bing search turns on every now and then without touching the phone at all. I agree with keyboard accuracy, it has diminished. Also the battery life has decreased too.. I love windows, but hey, how long we can give microsoft a chance to clean up their act

  • http://www.facebook.com/thatwallacegirl Angela Wallace

JUST updated htc hd7 and immediately following update the CAMERA won’t open! I discovered it quickly because I went to check out the new bing vision, and it went to a black screen. So then I tried to open the camera to make sure it was working, and it won’t even open! I can’t find ANY info on a glitch like THAT! Ideas???

I’m having issues with the disappearing keyboard and inaccurate typing. Also, my battery drains faster than pre-Mango. All my settings are the same. I’m using a HTC Trophy 7.

I’ve spent three weeks with Samsung Omnia W and buglist is quite short. Most of the things work like a charm, but I’ve found following bugs/features:
    - mango does not support vcard (send contact from practically any other phone via SMS)- create new email account (IMAP) wizard does not support data saving. After inserting all server/port/account settings screen saver came and everything was lost. - touchscreen has stopped working few times. Pressing power/sleep button made it work again.- bluetooth controls won’t work with my JVC car stereo. I can play music and make calls via BT but JVC’s answer call drops call and next/prev track button gives a loop effect to skip to next/prev track until i cut bt connection. These controls work with ZTE Blade and Sony Ericsson W980 phones.- call forwarding gives only number box, not “select contact” option. These are quite small ones, but f.e. touchsreen not responding is bit annoying.

    Phone info: SAMSUNG GT-I8350
    OS: WP 7.5
    OS rev: 7.10.7740.16

  • http://nishantarora.in/ Nishant Arora

I don’t know if this bothers anyone or not, but to me it’s like hell…. I have none of the “Serious” issues mentioned above, at the same time my concern is at the top priority.

The issue is the proximity does not turn OFF when using headphones in a call, Just make a call and use handsfree to do talk, since you are using handsfree, you are likely to look at other things or check facebook while in a long conference, but the phone would not know that I am using handsfree and it does not need to check for proximity.

But my Omnia W, can’t resist the temptation and would not allow me to touch the top right corner of the screen, because as soon as my fingers would proceed there, it will turn the screen off and when removed, I will be back to the call screen.
