Video performance of SE Xperia and Asus P565 compared

We don’t normally like to re-open old wounds, but we recently saw this video on PDA.pl and found it so striking we had to share it.

The video is a Core Player benchmark running the Matrix trailer.

It is clear the Qualcomm processor is seriously outclassed by the Marvel version. Of course HTC has warned that these comparisons are flawed, as their built-in video player, HTC Album, is hardware accelerated, while Core Player is not, but of course Core Player actually gives you the codec freedom to play downloaded video, which is usually exactly where you need to be able to play full resolution un-optimized video.

Of course tragically it seems the Asus P565 is being phased out by Asus in favour of its Qualcomm powered Garmin partnership, but I suggest if you want to play downloaded video, and you see this device around, its worth buying in favour of all the other legion of Qualcomm powered devices around.

See more benchmarks at PDA.pl here.

It’s not CorePlayer, it is the previous and free version of TCPMP with subtitle support. It uses hardware acceleration on Marvell CPUs but not on Qualcomm.

There is a CorePlayer version in development that will support the ATI chip on Qualcomm chipsets (or at least there are rumors on it), then we can compare the two platform’s speed.

Hardware acceleration by Core Player on Qualcomm has been coming for at least 6 months now (and likely much longer). I dont think it will ever arrive.

When will you stop comparing two totally different processors?! It’s like comparing early c2d to pentium D!!

Asus p565 processor uses xscale WMMX instructions to boost multimedia performance something that qualcomms processor lack (just like any other arm11 CPU).

When will people learn that marvell is so good at video playback only because it uses WMMX!

Even OMAP2 processor would fall in this battle because it has the same ARM11 processor as msm7201. Only with hardware acceleration it could match marvell which is the case with qualcomm processors.

What you say sounds true, and I don’t doubt it. I think the point is, that all of us EXPECTED our next-gen phones to be able to play video back smoothly. Even high quality video. So, whatever technology our phones don’t have, that’s not an excuse for how poorly they perform currently.

They kind of already have – by not giving us a 3.5mm jack on the new Diamond 2 or TP2… how many times did they have to ignore our plea’s to make sure it was included? Argh.
