VLC coming to Windows Mobile

Talking about great apps coming to Windows Mobile, Jean-Baptiste Kempf from VideoLan has announced in his blog that one of the targets of the VideoLan project is to develop an Windows CE and Windows Mobile version of the popular open source cross-platform video client.

This is particular good news for Windows Mobile video buffs, as the most popular free multi-codec Windows Mobile video player, TCMP, is not being developed anymore, having been superseded by the rather expensive Coreplayer.

No beta is available yet,but hopefully this will be arrive soon.

I hope that WM7 will support most codecs out of the box similar to what windows 7 is supposed to have. This way every device based on wm7 will use hardware acceleration for video playback and we wouldn’t have to pay for products like CP (cause most of the people buy it for the variety of video formats it can play). But still this is a good news. The more similar products on the market the more users gain from the competition between them.

Good good this is good news! the greedy bastards over corecodec has been such assholes because they have the only such program. Now competition will drive them mad. They promise shit they never able to keep up with. Hope VLC will be much better!

Unlike PC land which has a lot of well-documented APIs and heavy competition between hardware vendors because the consumer can swap out the part at any time, mobile users are pretty stuck with what they got. The ultimate lock-in.

PC land, the OEM hardware vendor maintains and updates the drivers, in mobile land good luck getting the device vendor to work with the technology OEM that doesn’t involve a lot of contracts, expensive licenses, and NDA APIs. WM7 better change that or some other device/OS is going to crush WM.
