Voxofon for Windows Phone 7 They say you close one door, and another opens. With Skype and Nimbuzz taking a wait and see approach to Windows Phone 7, it is welcome to see a VOIP company taking a proactive approach to the OS.

Voxofon’s international calling services allow customers to call using their smartphone, computer, land line, or a cell phone. All Voxofon services are available under a single account, providing customers with the flexibility to use the service they find most convenient.

"VoIP for smartphones is a relatively new and welcome development, since mobile phone users have traditionally paid a premium for long-distance service," says Voxofon CEO Alexey Goloshubin. "The rapidly expanding demand for smartphones for both personal and business use has increased demand for cost-saving applications such as Voxofon Call Abroad."

Unfortunately a closer look at the service reveals it to be nothing much more than an automated calling card, but then, that is a start, isn’t it

Why is it a "fake VoIP"? They never claim they are a VoIP company.

At the moment WP7 APIs do not allow pure VoIP calls. This is why Voxofon app uses the voice channel (call to a local access number) to reach Voxofon platform.

The call is then routed over VoIP. The advantage of this approach is that it does not require 3G or WiFi – basically works any place where you have cell coverage. The disadvantage – it may use your plan minutes.

The call can be terminated to an LD phone number (with great savings) or a VoIP destination such as SIP, Skype etc.

While I appreciate your comment, the truth is all international voice traffic is over IP networks at some point, so this is no more VOIP than using AT&T's normal network.

Having said that, this app is similar to Skype Lite, which has been the only Skype Android had access to for a long time.

Thank you for the feedback. We would love to do a pure VoIP over data channel. However, since the current version of the WP7 platform does not allow this, we are using the voice channel for connecting to our VoIP platform..

This "hybrid" approach has many advantages.

At the same time our solution is more than just phone calls – you can also call VoIP destinations (such as SIP, Skype or Google Talk) directly from your WP7 phone. This is something that carriers' networks do not provide.

As you noted there other products for other platforms such as Skype Lite on Android, Skype on Verizon etc that use a similar approach.

This is correct. Voxofon app uses web services over HTTP and HTTPS for signaling, while the phone call goes over the voice channel.

Really, who cares much about which way the call is routed. Most people have unlimited calls, so since it is a call to a local number then VoiP thereafter, it really has no significance to regular users. Again, who cares about the techie stuff if it works!

The dialer app is not very useful. It shows you how much credit you have and how much it will cost to call. It also has a store of all the local dial in numbers.

So what the app does is to allow you to select a contact and it automatically dials the local dial in number. You still have to enter the pin and number manually. I might as well as just get a phone card.
