“We’re working very closely together for Mango.”-Qualcomm On Microsoft

At the press briefing before its Uplinq conference, Qualcomm’s Senior Director for Software Strategy and Business Development  gave an overview of Qualcomm’s business. She cited the advantages of using Qualcomm chips and mentioned that Qualcomm develops all parts of their chipsets, from CPU/GPU, GPS, memory, RF etc, from scratch themselves as opposed to other chipset makers. Also she said Qualcomm being the only chipset maker working with all mobile OS’s. She added that all current generation Windows Phones are powered by Qualcomm and they are working with Microsoft closely to be the launch partner for Windows Phone ‘Mango’ too.

“Microsoft now understands the optimisation of the hardware – CPU, GPU acceleration, memory bandwidth – makes a very big difference in terms of how fast your software, OS, browser will work,”

“We’re working very closely together for Mango.”

I’m hoping all this synergy brings us 3rd generation ( Dual Core ) Snapdragon support like the HTC EVO 3D and the HTC Sensation.

Based on what I saw from the Kal-El line of CPU/GPU systems, I’d love to see quad core technologies make it to our phones. I’ve been waiting for top quality 3D games for my phone hoping that the inclusion of XNA would bring great games, but its clear that games that employ heavy use of 3D will require the fastest and most efficient combination of cores and XNA optimized code. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Hydrothunder Go, but there are plenty of places where frame rate drops to a marginally playable level. If MS works with Qualcom and others (NVidia, Samsung, TI, etc) it could bring true XBox 360 quality games to the platform. I just think that it will take quad core or better processors to be able to get to that level and provide true multiplayer gaming. WP7 has the best potential for gaming and MS should push quality first party games that kick A$$. It would sway many of the Android Fanboys and perhaps those casual iphone gamers to switch.

I’ve said it before and I;ll say it again. I think MS needs to break up the “one phone to rule them all” chassis model, if they want to hit all of the price points with WP7. Forcing manufactures to stick to a single chassis’ minimum requirements will force them to make mediocre handsets that just meet that minimum. I think MS needs 4 chassis designs that all have the same version of WP7 working on it. The first would be a low end minimum spec that allows the hw manufacturers to make cheap devices that could be sold to the emerging markets. Second would be a mid level specification (the current Chassis 1) that could meet most personal and business users’ needs without the necessary hardware for gaming. The third would be a high end specification that could run any XBox game with Quad Core CPU/GPU that could blow away any handset out there today with the capabilities to be a high end business phone and play games. I would even add to the reference a standard protocol that could connect each phone to a snap on game pad customized by each handset manufacturer so it could have a game pad controls for those high end games. Last but not least a Chassis 4 design with slide out game pad controls ala the Xperia Play. If they did this and let the manufacturers pick and choose which chassis they would like to make and add on their own pieces to enhance the minimum, it could be the great ecosystem MS is trying to build. I could go on but I won’t. :-P

I usually see the Microsoft remarks with regard to their benchmarks as utter BS. It’s not about the speed of Javascript it’s about the real life performance. I put those remarks in the ‘we can’t win this or that benchmark so lets look at it from a different point of view’ category.

So far though with WP7 they seem to have a point, and Qualcomm is stressing that point in the above article. I’ve seen dual core Android phones act more sluggishly than the single core WP7 handsets. Picking one processor and optimising the OS for it seems to be a very promissing choice.

Every techsite I see reporting on the handsets gets the same comments (or even articles). It’s not good enough because it’s not dual core. So far I’ve seen no merit to that comment.

      Soosan,

I agree that there is not much merit to the “Android phones use dual core so it must be better” rhetoric; however, you’re talking to us here in this forum. We know this. If you ask your average consumer however, they don’t. Reaching the masses is what MS has to do and during the HW wars of the PC era, “the faster and more CPUs the better” mentality was instilled in the general population. Generally, you are correct in that it doesn’t guarantee a better user experience, but it doesn’t hurt and the only potential downside is reduced battery life. Being on the older generation of technology in a competitive environment inadvertently says “I’m yesterday’s news” even if it isn’t true. These days people want the latest and greatest technology and if MS isn’t willing to be in that game, then it is almost a lost cause right from the beginning. You don’t have to be on the bleeding edge, but you have to be at least close to the front of the pack.
