What?!? Now Windows Phone 7 doesn’t support tethering?

Windows phone 7 will support tetheringThe roller coaster taken another dip, with Engadget reporting that Microsoft clarified to them directly that Windows Phone 7 does not support tethering.

This is of course directly opposite to what we have heard just yesterday from Brandon Watson, Director of Developer Experience, but I guess he may not actually know what his operating system is capable of…

Is there a truth out there? I guess we will know in 2 weeks time..

I've not found tethering support in my current developer phone, which is supposedly running the RTM build of the OS.

    • GP007

Dev phones don't run the RTM build, which is something like build 7003, check what build number you have.

I was a WP7 enthusiast, but now it's getting worser and worser.

    - No tethering,
    - No sync with Active Sync
    - No WP7 phones with more than 8GB storage (deal-breaker for me)

I was ready to renounce to copy & paste and multitasking, but all the above items are more than I can stand.
    Enough.

      See ya.

Tethering is nothing more than a software update and a willingness by the wireless carriers to allow it.

After years of people complaining about "Active Stink", now people are acting nostalgic about it, and missing it? Give me a break!

And the interior capacity is not know for all of the devices.

So go and seek that magic phone with 100% of what you want now. I'm sure you will still find stuff that isnt there with that either, and you will likely whine about that too.

I'm interested in knowing what you lose with the statement: No sync with Active Sync

I've tested syncing with my exchange server, plus setting up to work with a google apps account that looks like an exchange server connection. The fact that it can sync to multiple exchange servers at the same time is a big plus over the older windows mobile platform. On my desktop it syncs using the Zune software so that all of the pictures and music are copied off to my desktop machine, and I've also got the option of having it automatically store all of the pictures to skydrive.

I've got more issues with the restrictive security model of the current phone not allowing apps that I had worked with in the past. There is no way of accessing the call log, or manipulating calendar apointments. The second item could be achieved in a roundabout way using a web serice, but for my purpose that doesn't take advantage of the local calendar synchronization features.

Enough with the dealbreakers, if there was a magical handset that had everything and everything you need in it, probably it will never be made. Why??? because the business of smartphones has a cost to it, by creating a $1K smartphone with everything from a 12MP camera, dual cameras, 64+ GB storage etc etc. who do you see buying these? People that shop at Neiman Marcus and not the masses!

    • bch

Well, you could go with Android. Droid X owners are finding that can't even play mp3's after the latest update to Froyo. I know, this pales in comparison to the lack of C&P in WP7. ;-)

DO NOT believe Engadget. They are the most anti-MS blog out there.
@Steven Patrick: The LG E900 has 16GB storage. As for copy-n-paste i'm willing to wait for microsoft's superior implementation, namely tuck-n-paste: http://wmpoweruser.com/rumor-tuck-and-paste-how-w…

    • Danny

Please. Engadget is not even close to the most anti MS blog out there. Josh's review of the technical preview is superbly balanced and on this issue MS actually contacted them which is a lot more to go on than the rumor (hopefully true) of tuck-and-paste.

Tethering support is there, but it's not finished yet. When it will be finished, carriers can decice to enable or disable it on their networks. (Simply don't get a phone from the carrier – sorry US folks ;) ) Anyway I never heard of anyone who actually used it.

8 GB storage is the minimum, LG Optimus 7 has in fact 16.

I use tethering on a regular basis with my T-Mobile Dash3G. (When I sawy regular, I mean only about twice a month) I usually get better speed when tethered than a random hotspot, but when I just want to set up in a coffee shop for a quick checkin using wifi is less hassle. I usually use tethering if there's a charge for the hotspot, or if the connection via the hotspot seems unreliable, or I'm in a location that simply doesn't have wifi.

Tethering has been one of the primary reasons I've not moved to the iPhone in recent years.

My buddies and I at work use our android phones (MyTouch and Droid) to set up quick hotspots on a daily basis.

    • bch

I use it occasionally with my Samsung Jack, which uses WM 6.5. I'll just keep the Jack in my computer bag along with the tethering/power cable, then swap out my AT&T sim card when I need to use it unless/until it's enabled on WP7.

Okay, so that's three plus your friends. ;)

  • Vinnie

Thanks for getting my hopes up, Brandon Watson.

  • efjay

Better if this had not been revealed this way, a simple "coming soon" would have been better rather than this which just highlights another missing feature. Another gaff by Microsoft with WP7, they are really stumbiling towards the launch rather than striding purposefully.

  • http://twitter.com/chmun77 @chmun77

damn…. now my dream is shattered….. c'mon. if tethering is just a simple piece of s/w, please include it in upon launch!

  • Tamarai

I guess we'll have to wait for them to have another WP7 pride parade ;)
