Windows Phone 7.8 push-out for Nokia Lumia “imminent” but Nokia has “no further information”

Nokia has told PocketGamer.biz that the roll-out of Windows Phone 7.8 for existing Nokia Lumia handsets was “imminent”  but that the date was in Microsoft’s hands.

“With Windows Phone 7.8 beginning to ship pre-loaded on Nokia Lumia smartphones, we will naturally be deploying the software to our factories for product rollout,” Nokia said in a statement.

The software is currently coming pre-loaded on the Nokia Lumia 610 and 505, but the mass of Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 handsets around the world have not had the software pushed out to them yet, despite it appearing on Nokia’s private servers.

“Microsoft announced that it is working closely with hardware and carrier partners to get it tested, approved, and rolled out to as many devices as possible in early 2013,” the firm concluded.

Early 2013 is of course a very nebulous term, and could encompass anything June 30th.  Unfortunately Nokia was not able to pin down the date any closer.

“At present we have no more information we can give about wider availability of the update for phones running Windows Phone 7.5,” Nokia ended.

The update will bring the new Windows Phone 7.8 start screen, an increased number of accent colours, improvements to the lock screen, and on Nokia’s part new Bluetooth file sharing software and other improvements.
