Windows Phone 7 Browser Update Is Imminent

At the D@CES event at the Consumer Electronics Show which took place on January 7th, Walt Mossberg had conversation with Dean Hachamovitch, who heads the Internet Explorer team within the Windows unit at Microsoft. Walt and Dean were discussing about the state of the current browser landscape, Microsoft’s strategy on browser and the upcoming Internet Explorer 9’s features such as Tracking Protection. Also Privacy was the main topic in the discussion. So how does it relate to Windows Phone 7? Here it is, at the end of the session when audience were allowed to ask questions to Dean, one gentleman asked him about Windows Phone 7. Here is the exact conversation transcript ,

Question from the guy: You were talking lot about desktop browser. As more and more people are using mobile browsers, specifically Windows Phone 7 relaunched with a much more capable browser. Are you planning on bringing these features to mobile side as well?

Answer from Dean: I think the shortest answer that you can infer from is..we will be talking about our mobile browser soon and I’ll just Smile, you can infer from that.

Imminent meaning February or March, or imminent meaning June or July?
I believe they already announced that a major browser update is coming in Mango, but this article seems to imply that something else is coming sooner than Mango in the summer.

    • Keith

Yes curious indeed. That sounds like a major browser update before Mango and nothing like that was ever implied before. Hmmm…MWC could be interesting.

    • j2inet

I thought "Mango" is thus far an unconfirmed (unannounced) rumor. The only officially announced forthcoming functionality is Copy+Past and some additional performance updates.

      • Keith

Mango is unannounced but it is not much of a secret and is for real and also known as the “entertainment branch” internally. The timeframe is unknown but is not expected before summer. That is what makes the hint of a browser update more intriguing. But I’m doubtful about a browser update within the next couple of months.

        • Keith

I shouldn't be saying "update". If anything about the browser is officially discussed it would most likely be a timeline rather than an update.

    • http://twitter.com/incendy @incendy

No, it sounds like they will be talking about it soon lol.. The Internet is so funny

  • Jason

"Imminent Soon" is totally redundant btw.

    • Bob

And "totally" is superfluous. It's either redundant, or it isn't. ;)

    • syrinx

      Exactly what I was thinking.

    • Hatorade

Second that, you can say something is imminent or something will happen soon, you can't imply both together at once more like I am "joy happy" today

  • Bob

Why does anybody give Mosspuppet the time of day?

    • Paul

      Three hints: W. S. J.

  • Dave

What??? All he said was "we will be talking about our mobile browser soon"…..we'll talk about it soon> No where does he even infer there is an imminent update!!

You guys continually twist things out of shape here. It's becoming more and more difficult to get real news about WP7 here. I'm never sure what to believe, and what is twisted, wishful thinking.

    • Mark

I've been thinking the same thing…Alot of the stories lately have been STRETCHED.

  • http://www.facebook.com/inteller Joseph Heath Wallis

soon in Microsoft speak could be next year. They have no understanding of mobile device timelines.

  • Jchavez

well they have to catch up with andriod and ios so maybe M$ is taking there mobile platform seriously, and mango will bring onther things like video chat and multitasking…

  • http://www.facebook.com/haasb Blake Haas

Ahh, i wouldn't say "Imminent" at all.. Atleast 5 months away.

  • TimoTim

I loved ever bit of this "interview". It started off shakey for Dean and he appeared kinda nervious (I really dont understand how Moss makes so many so nervious) but Dean came roaring back in the second half… it was like night and day. He was catching Moss on every angle he threw his way. You could see the confidence building in him as it went on. Moss gave it one last try and Dean held his ground… Moss thought it best to give up and take questions. Very entertaining! I wish more MS reps would shoot their interviewers down when they go into attack mode…most just b**** up and take it up the ***. Great Job Dean, great job.

You jump to the strangest conclusions sometimes. I don't know how you got from the quoted statement to your headline. Oh well, congratulations, you got your page hit from me, but I'm about to drop this site from my list of feeds.

  • chmun77

Nothing is confirmed as far as I see from his statements. Let's not speculate and just focus on the upcoming Jan patch first. C'mon MS! We need the first patch already!

  • Paul

Listening to Dean put forward his best argument for why IE, I'm starting to understand why MS's share continues to decline.

    • paul

Wow, that's a lot of downgrades. So you guys actually think that was the kind of confident, content rich presentation that's MS needs for a product that has been losing share for more than half a decade and where those losses are escalating?

I'm a two decade IE user and I sure don't. IE9 is making some progress, but far too slowly. And the mobile version is still years behind Apple. Does that make any sense from the historical browser leader?
Anyway, vote this down too or better yet show me what I’m missing.

That's the thing, the browser can be updated independently of the OS. No 'major update' or announced system update required.

  • hAl

The only thing that is obvious is that Microsoft will announce something soon. But releasing it is another matter.

    I dont like Walt Mossberg.
