Windows Phone 7 styled Silverlight Sudoku games gives a taste of the OS

sliverlightsudoku

Rishi from Orktane.com has published  this Silverlight based Sudoku game which is a port of his iPhone app ported using nRoute Toolkit.

The software gives a taste of the UI we can see in these puzzle-type games and I must say, the cut-off text started grating pretty quickly.

What the game does however demonstrate is the ease with which good-looking user interfaces can be created in Silverlight relatively quickly, and will hopefully mean we can look forward to a large number of good looking applications soon after the release of Windows phone 7.

People should leave the "cut off text" to the experts (Microsoft designers), otherwise it just looks amateurish makes people hate the whole idea.

I kind of hate the whole idea in general. :

Too much waiting for animations to load in, too much 'hip' cut-off text everywhere. I know you don't need to see the whole word to read it, and maybe it's just the old-fashioned stickler in me, but seeing these animations and cut off text throughout the entire OS makes me think they've gone for looks over functionality/simplcity of use which I don't get in a mobile phone that was primarily intended to do real work.

Granted I might change my tune once I try or at least see WP7 in person, but for right now, I'd rather have the useful Windows 3.1ish look of WM Classic rather than having to wait for carousels to rotate into place every time I touch the screen in order to, you know, do some work.

I think this Metrosexual interface works better on a purely entertainment device like the ZuneHD, or for people that use their smartphone as a purely entertainment device 90 percent of the time.

Metrosexual? what the hell man? where did that come from?

  • Goel

    Agreed.

  • pocketDragon

While it may look like a metro interface on the surface, it doesn't function like a metro interface. A little time with a ZuneHD would have made that obvious. It looks like a pretty tech demo with flipping pages and poorly aligned text.

black and white and not enough differentiation between the 9 sectors. No way to annotate, no real value over and above a pencil and paper. Feels like an amateur game compared to teh more usable, prettier and more professional sudoku i use on my windows 6.5 (and that worked on my hx4700 which was windows mobile 3)

  • Rico

MS needs to release a style guide for Metro so that we don't get apps like this that fail to use the interface well. i do think that compared to more standard UIs that it's harder to implement practically.

i've ranted about the interface from a design standpoint before so i won't do it in full here, but i'll just say that i don't really see it being as intuitive as something like the iPhone, and i think it fit the Zune demographic much better than the broader demographic targeted by Windows Phone. i also think MS needs to reduce the total number of transition effects used, and if possible reduce transition time. On the topic of transitions, let's not forget that they hide load times. You can either have a transition or a wait cursor and despite being a longtime WM user, i'd rather have the former.

The reason the iPhone feels a lot smoother than it is is the number of animations hiding the real wait times.

I suspect we'll see a set of standard controls that fit the Metro UI which will make things a whole lot easier. We only have to wait till tomorrow to see what this stuff is going to be like though!

"The reason the iPhone feels a lot smoother than it is is the number of animations hiding the real wait times. "

Yeah, that's what i was hinting at. :) i also think the iPhone motion metaphor of zooming into apps when you start them and then zooming out back to the Springboard/home screen makes more sense than the carousel animations in Metro. Another reason the iPhone seems so smooth is that it's usually running only one app at a time.
