Windows Phone 7 to be launched late August?

Windows Phone 7 to be launched in August? We have seen a strange game of dates with Windows Phone 7, with the launch date receding on some days, and on others advancing to frankly unbelievable dates on others.

The latest rumour, via Neowin, is that Microsoft will be holding a launch event in Australia for Windows Phone 7 at the end of August. Now I know that Australia is ahead of us in time, but probably not by a whole month earlier that the earliest date we have heard so far, the end of September 2010.

On the other hand, a launch date does not necessarily mean devices will be made available, much like the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 only saw devices arriving on market much later, which does lend some credence to an August date.

Will we see an official announcement by Microsoft soon? Let us know your thoughts below.

Maybe it will be only launch of the OS itself and not devices, something like "we're proud to announce that our OS has reached RTM and you can expect those new devices(instead of developers devices they'll show actual production models) within a month and updated SDK within 24h"

I'd be very surprised if they actually launch any devices at the end of August. Third party developers don't even have the final development kits yet, so a lot of apps are still to be finished. Like you say, it may just be an event claiming that everything is ready to go and final tools will be released etc…
Will be interesting to see what happens.

I wouldn't be surprised if they RTM the OS at the end of this month and have devices on sale at the end of Sept. This makes more sense to me, unless they've been, and this very well could be the case, seeding their OEM partnhers with builds as they've been working on them. They could, for example, have a bit newer build than what devs have on their phones but close enough to RTM that any changes MS has/will done/do won't effect the OEMs hardware testing and own apps.

Then it's just a case of flashing to the RTM build later this month.

Last week, a WP evangelist at the London User Group meeting explicitely said that they expect, at least the sdk, to hit RTM by mid August.
